Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

In your state can you then choose which caucus to go to each year? And if so, do you mind if I ask which you chose?

As Massachusetts as an "un-enrolled" voter I can chose to vote in either the democratic or republican primary on any given year.

It has been a long time since I went so I forget. It is a mess and no one listens so I stopped going. (I hate caucuses)

I believe you do it with your party though.

Don't blame us city folk, blame the state Democratic Party. :) It's been in shambles since the Granholm disaster.
What happened that the Michigan Dems and Granholm became so hated by those still in Michigan? I left the state after her first term due to lack of employment, but everyone loved Jenny at the time. She was still trying to clean up Engler's mess. Then, right around 2010ish Jenny was a c-word and Michigan was all her fault. Even my own mother, who said nothing ill of Jenny ever had turned against her.

Surely, she's pure scum. That new shiny Repub governor that poisoned the water though? He's a gem.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

Just because the latter is true doesnt make the former any less relevant. I dont blame the loss on Johnson and Stein but they were part of the problem. They were the missed calls in the 3rd period of a tie game. They arent the reason for the loss but **** they didnt help either!

Hillary lost cause her coalition cracked. They cracked cause of her...

I think she lost because of this.

The Republican party consisted of a small group of white, financially successful, largely older voters of which Rover (anyone remember him) reminded us there were fewer and fewer of each day.

The rest of the party was again, primarily white and pretty poor, but spread across all age groups.

The Democratic party consisted of a group of more highly educated, financially successful coalition of mostly whites, but also some minorities. This group exceeds in size the wealthy Republican strata, but nowhere close to the Republican party as a whole.

The Democratic party also consisted of poor, disadvantaged groups cutting across all age and racial boundaries.

What we saw in this election is what I think will be an early move in a big realignment of the political parties. We saw leakage of some of the Democrats poor and disadvantaged into the Republican ranks. This leakage was almost entirely white, but it was enough to offset numerical advantages held by Democrats elsewhere, helped in part by a softer turnout for minorities.

A lot of Donald Trump supporters have a lot in common with a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters. There is going to come a time when those two groups start voting together as a larger block. The question will be who will do the best job to recruit them to their party.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

I blame Nate Silver and the Chicago Cubs. Everything was going great until he wrote that article about them having a worse chance than Trump.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

If someone qualified, experienced and pragmatic can't win because he/she doesn't appeal to a bunch of people that play the lottery as an investment, then that's a voter problem, not a candidate problem.

I still can't work through this in my mind. How on policy they could not be any different. Policy matters. People apparently don't believe policy comes from government.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

No, the reason Hillary lost is even simpler and dovetails nicely with what MaizeRage just posted.

The voters were playing Celebrity Apprentice Presidential Election Edition. And the Chairman of the Board always wins on his reality show.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

My dad just celebrated the Trump victory as a middle finger to Washington -_-

He's going to be sorely disappointed when Trump doesn't do anything about jobs or the banksters.

But Pence will make sure that far-right social derp gets enacted, so...yay?

Maybe so, but pretending like it's not an issue gets you a loss.

Hey, I wish voters were smarter too.

They're not.

They want to picture themselves having a beer with their candidate. Or... rounding up illegals with their candidate and tossing them over a wall into a river. :D

Well, the 53% of women who voted for him will have nothing to say. Cause that's what they voted for.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin

It's not an absolute scale. It's a relative to the person you're standing next to scale. The only way Trump wins is who he was up against.

Now wishing Uncle Joe had run.

Maybe the most likable politician ever. Certainly in recent memory.
