Re: Campaign 2016 Part XXV: Fin
Just because the latter is true doesnt make the former any less relevant. I dont blame the loss on Johnson and Stein but they were part of the problem. They were the missed calls in the 3rd period of a tie game. They arent the reason for the loss but **** they didnt help either!
Hillary lost cause her coalition cracked. They cracked cause of her...
I think she lost because of this.
The Republican party consisted of a small group of white, financially successful, largely older voters of which Rover (anyone remember him) reminded us there were fewer and fewer of each day.
The rest of the party was again, primarily white and pretty poor, but spread across all age groups.
The Democratic party consisted of a group of more highly educated, financially successful coalition of mostly whites, but also some minorities. This group exceeds in size the wealthy Republican strata, but nowhere close to the Republican party as a whole.
The Democratic party also consisted of poor, disadvantaged groups cutting across all age and racial boundaries.
What we saw in this election is what I think will be an early move in a big realignment of the political parties. We saw leakage of some of the Democrats poor and disadvantaged into the Republican ranks. This leakage was almost entirely white, but it was enough to offset numerical advantages held by Democrats elsewhere, helped in part by a softer turnout for minorities.
A lot of Donald Trump supporters have a lot in common with a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters. There is going to come a time when those two groups start voting together as a larger block. The question will be who will do the best job to recruit them to their party.
