I know you're a young'n, but George Wallace did very well in 1968 winning 45 electoral votes (all in the deep south).

I vaguely remember the name from reading Doonesbury back in the day (hilarious, btw).

I sometimes do wonder if Trump's trying to carefully back out of the job. He may be starting to get cold feet looking at how overwhelming it is. He just can't just drop out. He'd get more threats than anyone in history.

I doubt this is the case...but there are is an amazing amount of gaffes and comments that point to unelectability.

So you're taking the cop-out, and rather just sit on the sidelines and ****** rather than doing something. And here's our problem in a nutshell.

Talking as a D...what does a moderate R do? Do they vote for Trump knowing he's a debacle? Do they not vote? Do they go I even though it isn't even an option? He has as much of an opinion as anyone (and he's an adult about it), so I welcome his feedback. (although it doesn't mean I won't argue with him ;p )

Discuss, debate, argue. We are all doing this CIVILLY which I really appreciate. There are a LOT of different opinions flying about, and we're at least LISTENING to each other. I don't expect any minds to change, but I hope we can at least see each others' viewpoints. That goes for me, too.

Depends on your viewpoints, I suppose. As far as Hillary/Trump, they just are trying to get enough votes to win. If it's not an overall majority of the nation, oh well. Just get enough to win (to be fair, that's pretty much ANY politician, I shouldn't single out Hillary/Trump).

Your imagination of Trump and his motives is frightening...

I'm not sure there are many moderate R's left.... At least not at the national level. I traditionally considered myself to be one. King of center/right on fiscal issues and center/left on social issues (but find myself moving left alongside the overall population on some social issues).

We still see some here in the northeast.

What, that he's a reckless con-man shyster with a short temper who's made (allegedly) millions off people that believe his spiel? And that he's using this campaign as a big publicity stunt? I don't even know if HE thought he could get this far, but now that he has, his ego won't let him quit.

Is that imagination? :)

How many times do you need to be hit in the head with a brick to know it hurts? How many calls do you need to see the average college hockey referee to blow to know that we need to do some work to elevate the quality of officiating? And how many times do journalists need to ask whether the latest controversy over something beyond contempt that Donald Trump says is different from the ones that came before it until they realize that nothing the idiot says will lose him one iota of support from his legions of lemmings?

100 days before the election and I continue to weep for our future. We've been hearing about how radical Islamic terrorism is a threat to our way of life now for 15 years. Donald Trump, much more than any other single person, even one with a suicide vest strapped to their chest, actually is a threat to our way of life. Islamic terrorists have the capability of threatening and destroying innocent lives. Trump as president would have the capability of destroying our country, and about 195 others, give or take.

There are some in....

Ohio.

Great article on the politics of the state. It highlights the contortions that these candidates are putting the country in... in general and the great battleground state in particular:

Murkowski was one but she's been dragged to the right over the years.

I think my last hope died when Traficant was busted. That's the day I gave up on politics.

I think there are tons of moderate R voters, but these voters have no national party standing for their interests. The GOP has learned from bitter experience that moderate Members lose because radicals won't support them, while insane Members still win because moderates still support them against Democrats.

The only way for moderate Republicans to get back control of their party is to punish radical Members by refusing to support them. By continuing to hold their nose and support radical Members, they ensure they have no voice.

John Heinz would have a hard time being elected as a R :(

A sad truth. I lean conservative on most things, especially fiscal. Lean liberal on things like gay marriage, religion, and free speech. I can't support either major candidate this year. Did look up the site recommended to me for the (I), and I agree with most of it, would like better wording/explanation on some of it (the tax stance especially).

There are quite a few lost voters in this nation, and if a candidate can represent us....we would have a good start to a new era.

No one cared WMD was missing. No one cares if Trump attacks a dead vets family.

Prominent GOPers are already part of the backlash. Is the first you do every morning to check if the sky is still up?

Hell, the first thing he does is check if he's still breathing.

Kasich, Romney and Michael Steele come to mind as Republicans who have put country (and sanity) ahead of partisanship and have had strong language against Trump. Cruz is there too, but that's not Cruz being noble -- he's fine with a dangerous delusional a-hole running the country, he just wants it to be himself.

On the other end, Ryan has destroyed his credibility almost as much as Christie. Newt, Corker and Pence are likewise going down on the wrong side of history. And what can you say about jackholes like Rudy, Sessions, and The Two Kings (Steve and Pete)? They're even crazier than Trump, so their support for him isn't craven or calculated -- it's actual belief.

I have a feeling the lasting split in the GOP may be generational. The only ones who have a chance to emerge from this with any dignity are the ones too young right now to have to go on record about Augustus the Ape.

Cruz is a *-tard, but at least he stood by what he believes in, and didn't endorse Trump. It's more than I can say for Bernie and his cave-in. Don't get me wrong, Cruz is a POS. Would never vote for him. But he never wavered. I'll give him that.
