Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

You make about as much sense as Trump in a debate, Flaggy!

Hey, it's not my fault you see my name, one word, and then make a non-contextual statement. You and the ivy leaguer are no different.

And in case you forgot, the Clinton donor does not have my vote.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Dubya was "likable" and Gore was a stiff piece of wood. It is not the same.
I didn't get a chance to watch last night's debate, but I think "likability" is an important attribute.

In third grade, when the smartest girl in the room got up and gave her book report, she was terrific. She spoke in clear sentences. She mostly understood the subtext of the book and presented her thoughts in a staightforward way. She got the "A". But no one in the class liked her, short of one or two of her friends who looked up to her.

Back when Bill Clinton was POTUS, a friend of mine who is a pretty hardcore Republican made the comment one day to the effect that even though he could never vote for Bill, Clinton was the kind of guy who if he showed up at your backyard barbecue, you'd be happy to see him. You know that he'd go over and grab a beer and everyone would have a good time with him there.

No one wants to see HRC show up at the party. But, fortunately for her, very few people want to see Trump there either.

I see your name and the one word that comes into my mind is "nonsense". 100 out of 100 times my assessment of your post turns out to be correct. ;)

You know what's funny? That word comes to my mind when I see your name. Just as polarising as ever.

It's lucky for Trump that 40% of the country was unable to see that beatdown due to the EPA Blackout. Personally, I thought it was odd Lester Holt didn't even mention it.

Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIX: Escape from the Planet of Debates

Hillary's team is already cutting ads based on the debate. Both the taxes issue and the stiffing people I believe. This also gives great fodder as her surrogates (Obama, Sanders, Warren) start fanning out across the country.

Frankly, we couldn't have realistically asked for a better outcome. Short of Trump having a mental breakdown and storming off the stage. The best part is there's tons more to hit him with, and Hillary (not the world's best debater) didn't try to cram in all the attacks at once. He'll never get away from birtherism, and she hasn't brought up the part about all Mexicans being rapists, or attacking a Gold Star family, or making fun of a disabled person, or an ex-POW. Nothing yet about him being under investigation with his charity and bribing the Florida AG into dropping the case. Or how he uses the charity to pay his legal settlements. What she's doing is what the media was either too cowardly or too lazy to do, which is hold him accountable using his own words. He's got nowhere to go here. If he tones it down he's going to look neutered. If he doubles down on his losing strategy from the first debate good luck with that. Frankly I find it hard to believe he can keep his cool for more than 5 minutes.

This is probably your longest post that I have 100% agreed with.

My only worry is that based on the precedent of other debate drubbings, the media will bothsider it and the polls will lock in at around Hillary up 49/43/8. A lead coupled with EV advantages, certainly, but still within the margin of one serious October Surprise.

Risk = probability x loss, and this election is like risk assessment for 9/11. Trump has a low probability of occurring, but the loss incurred by the US if he occurred would be so immense that it pushes his risk score uncomfortably high.

Both are hated, but which one would you want defending you in court if your life depended on it?

Boom-shaka-lak (?sp)

Out on Cafe today I saw a NAPALM sticker on a Dude08
A little voice inside my head said
Don't stir hate, you should never spur hate
I thought I knew what trolls were
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
On USCHO, but...

What if he's bringing cocaine? With all those sniffles he could end up being the life of the party if you're into the dummy dust (an oldie but goody).

The answer is obvious. But that's not how the vast majority of the country watches these debates.

To Ivy League graduates, to doctors, to lawyers, to engineers, to people who love debating, I have no doubt that HRC came across as brilliant. But, as difficult as it may be for you, pretend like you have a 10th grade education and you're working at an ethanol plant in the midwest or as a coal miner in West Virginia. How'd she come across then? I'm curious, because like I said, I didn't see the debate. But from what I've seen of her, I doubt that she came across that likable or warm. Why do you think there are so many lawyer jokes, out of affection?

As time goes on, it gets harder and harder for Trump to appeal to people outside of his base. Frankly I'm not sure that's his best move at this point. Cynical as it is, his only chance to win this election is if her supporters stay home. For that reason I think he doubles down on the tactics we saw last night which continues to drive people into her camp. While he could benefit from an October surprise, I'd have to wonder what that surprise would be in order to get educated voters to suddenly start backing him. His performance last night in front of an alleged huge crowd reinforced every negative stereotype people have about the man.
