Re: Campaign 2016 Part XIV: Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Convention Was

And guy in my Wednesday night golf league believes the same thing. Of course, he also said, in all seriousness, that the world's is going to end in his lifetime. So take it for what you will.

He also yearns for the good old days of the 50s, so that probably tells you where he's coming from.

People at my work are like this. They're also old, white, male and loudly Christian.

Good piece, in which 538 is shocked to discover that the successes of the Republican party in the 80s and 90s were grounded in white resentment rather than economic theory. Whodathunkit?

Most prominently, as has been said time and again, it is a party of breathtaking whiteness.

“You’re not going to do better than 59 percent,” Stuart Stevens, Mitt Romney’s chief strategist, told me not long ago, citing the percent of the white vote that his candidate got in 2012 while winning 24 states. Ronald Reagan, by comparison, got only 56 percent of the white vote in 1980 but won in a 44-state landslide.

“Now, you can talk about these Reagan Republicans” — at his own mention of a conservative subset of voters some say didn’t turn out for Romney, Stevens stopped to guffaw a little — “I can tell you where to find Reagan Republicans: Go to a cemetery in Oakland County, Michigan. That’s where you find ’em.”

Race relations are so good under Mr. Obama that a group called "Black Lives Matter" had to form.

The problems BLM talk about have been gallows humor in the black community since the 1950s.

Man you do love your logical fallacies dont you?

So by your screwed up logic race relations are only bad when the people fight back? And it is Obama's fault that Black people are mad cause cops keep shooting them? Please educate us further.

No way...Driving While Black didnt exist as an issue before Obama according to people in North Dakota ;) (where they have more trees: 1 than Black people)

So a problem that has existed pretty much since the country was founded has gotten worse because the victimized group has gotten the fortitude to speak up?

BLM protestors have acted amazingly stupid from a tactical standpoint at times. But you're being willfully ignorant if you think their grievances only started 8 years ago.

Who's had a worse election season, country club Republicans or Fox News? Ailes on his way out...

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/07/murdochs-have-decided-to-remove-roger-ailes.html

AFAIK FNC is still raking in the dough.

Ailes getting the axe is interesting, though. He created FNC to fabricate an alternate reality for Republicans to train their voters without the distraction of facts. Obviously it was wildly successful so Murdoch, who is only interested in money, will keep the model. But Ailes' purpose was ruthlessly partisan. If the audience opposed something but the RNC was for it, Ailes would either peddle the RNC line or more frequently just embargo the subject. With Ailes gone, Murdoch's hand-picked successor may simply play to the audience's bias. That wouldn't make FNC any less garbage, but it would sever the causal connection between its coverage and GOP electoral interests. As we've learned, the conservative grift actually makes more money when they are out of power, since they can whine and dog whistle with impunity.

FNC might morph from an RNC propaganda organ to something more like InfoWars. Vice for stupid people.

I'm curious if his act can be followed though. I may not agree with some of these guys while simultaneously given them their due. Since Murdoch is like 105 years old also the changing of the guard at Fox, in place since its founding, could be interesting.

If you stand for nothing, Burr, what'll you fall for?

The 2016 Republican Party wants to repeal most of the financial regulations passed in the wake of the 2008 crisis. They also would like to give the wealthiest people on Wall Street an enormous tax cut, while making it legal for financial advisers to gamble with retirees’ money (again). Oh, and they want to reinstate Glass-Steagall’s prohibition on commercial banks engaging in investment business. Which is to say, they want to break up the big banks.

One of these things is not like the others.

What the ----?

Oh, I think it will survive. FNC is run like CBN. Long after Robertson is in the ground, the grift will go on with some young, fresh-faced successor vacuuming the pockets of the rubes. Like a Christianist show, FNC's business model is fan service -- whatever its audience believes FNC selects/distorts events to reinforce it. Its news philosophy is Confirmation Bias. So the only way FNC will change is if it can make more money appealing to a different consumer target, and I doubt that will happen in the lifetime of anybody reading this.

Did the house band just troll the audience by playing "Eminence Front"?

That'll be news to some of the lovely residents of Fargo. If North Dakota has more trees than black people then where did all of these crime committing, Tuberculosis carrying, benefit mooching, non-English speaking, Sharia law wanting people that Lutheran Social Sevices shipped in come from?
