I'm mostly D. But I do believe Kasich's authenticity more than pretty much anyone else in this year's cycle. Everyone else has changed positions on various policies and has been pandering, populist in doing so. In debates where it took supreme guts, Kasich frequently went against not just moderators...he went against every other nominee and audiences alike. As a politician seeking the GOP nomination, why in the world would you fake that?

Kasich also ran to the middle on women's issues but in power he was a knuck. He was trying to claim an empty lane: "the sane one." His gamble was being the only guy in a less popular lane he'd go farther than being just another of a dozen in the crazy lane. And it worked: he got to third, whereas there's no reason he should ever have outlasted guys like Bush, Rubio, Christie or even Walker.

Kasich is making the assumption that Trump will suffer the worst GOP electoral defeat since Goldwater, and he'll have his hands completely clean after that happens. We'll see if that's correct or not, but if that does happen he emerges from the rubble as the highest ranking "told ya so" Republican who currently holds a high office. Rubio is willing to suck up to Trump now. So is Cruz who will speak at the convention. As will Paul Ryan. Really, the only other two elected Goopers I've seen oppose Trump from non-blue states are Flake and Sasse, and nobody knows who those guys are nationally.

Oh, I get that. But I think Kasich has to realize that he's small potatoes and this was his one shot -- he has no national future. The GOP has to go Latino, female, or both in 2020 to staunch the bleeding. The era of old, static white guys for the Republican party is over unless they are content to be a regional party, and even if they are their donors are not.

No, the next time Brown is up, which I think is 2018. That would coincide with the end of his term as governor as well. I think Kasich is 64, so shooting for a Senate seat at 66 isn't unusual.

Having said that, country club Republicans, which Kasich firmly is, are a dying breed in Congress. While I doubt he'd be denied the nomination by a wingnut, I'm also not sure why he'd join a Senate caucus dominated by Ted Cruz, Jodi Ernst, and Tom Cotton amongst many others of the same ilk. His people (Hatch, McCain, Grassley, Itch) are all ancient and its debatable if any of them will be around beyond their current terms.

Forgive me, but even at 5-1 with 90 seconds left on April 9, 2016, I didn't have "Number 8" in the rafters.

But if Trump wins in 2016 Kasich is twice as dead nationally unless he's his Veep.

I agree with you completely*, particularly since the odds of Hillary getting indicted for something in any given 3-month period are never lower than 10%. She might actually do an indictable offense on her way to voting on November 8. She's the political version of a kleptomaniac.

Plus of course even if she does nothing the GOP will be desperately throwing everything against the wall, real or fake.

* I'm one of those fans who if you take out car keys in the final minute with a lead smaller than 3 is liable to whomp you in the head.

All tD has to do is keep calling Hillary an "honest politician" in the same vein as Marc Antony kept calling Brutus an "honourable man."

Evan Bayh's back to running for Senate in Indiana. Sabato moved the seat from Likely R to tossup
