He actually got elected as the non-endorsed Republican during his first election, when Prpich was retiring from office and therefore it was a vacant seat. Carlson had kicked off an Independent after losing the endorsement during the caucus for being a RINO, but then the endorsed guy got caught in some sort of sex scandal (don't recall the specifics). After that happened, Carlson started receiving the R money. This was in 1990, and I was only 13 at the time, so I only ever got the info in bits and pieces.
(Grabbed off Wiki real quick) "A scandal arose in the 1990 election after the initial Republican nominee, businessman Jon Grunseth, beat Carlson in the primary. On October 15, it was revealed that, in 1981, Grunseth had invited three then-teenaged friends of his stepdaughter, as well as his stepdaughter herself, to go skinny-dipping in the pool at his home."
ETA: And it turns out that Perpich was straight up beat by Carlson, he hadn't retired at that point after all.
I have a feeling "Arne Carlson" had a leg up in any election not contested against "Jan Anderson."
