I have a feeling "Arne Carlson" had a leg up in any election not contested against "Jan Anderson."

He actually got elected as the non-endorsed Republican during his first election, when Prpich was retiring from office and therefore it was a vacant seat. Carlson had kicked off an Independent after losing the endorsement during the caucus for being a RINO, but then the endorsed guy got caught in some sort of sex scandal (don't recall the specifics). After that happened, Carlson started receiving the R money. This was in 1990, and I was only 13 at the time, so I only ever got the info in bits and pieces.

(Grabbed off Wiki real quick) "A scandal arose in the 1990 election after the initial Republican nominee, businessman Jon Grunseth, beat Carlson in the primary. On October 15, it was revealed that, in 1981, Grunseth had invited three then-teenaged friends of his stepdaughter, as well as his stepdaughter herself, to go skinny-dipping in the pool at his home."

ETA: And it turns out that Perpich was straight up beat by Carlson, he hadn't retired at that point after all.

Didn't know that. We've seen what that can deliver in our neighbor to the east. With the brutal exception of TPaw, we've had a D/I government for decades and this place is like heaven (in a block of ice).

The Stache is going on his 6th term. He's clearly grooming Kim Reynolds to replace him, and I don't know who on the left has the name recognition to beat her even though she's full on tea party. The Stache is at least old school Republican in the Bob Dole mode.
The state house is solidly red, like 56-44 or so.
The state Senate is 26-24 for the Dems.

3/4th of the Congress reps are GOP, including Steve King. (My guess is at least one of these flip to make it 50/50 this November).
Both senators are GOP, including the pig castrating breadbags wearing Ernst.

The only real bright spot for the state Dems is Tom Miller, who has the AG position locked up for life (he's already the longest tenured AG in the country by far).

Edit: the state senate is 26-23-1, after a GOP member became independent to protest Trump. So effectively 26-24 since he still caucuses with them.

He might be the single worst major party presidential nominee we've ever had in this nation's history. I don't care what you think of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump would be an unmitigated disaster. Economically, diplomatically, and environmentally.

I'm so terribly embarrassed for our country.

Did he have no career ambition past Iowa AG or why wouldn't he be pulled up to the Justice Department at some point?

He's worse than Dubya. That says it all.

W was actually kind of smart in his own special way. Donald Trump hasn't a clever bone in his body. It's all dick-measuring and fixing the eyeholes in his pillowcase.

Trump is clever enough to get this far in the presidential race. Having Hilary and Trump as candidates says alot about the American public.

Didn't you have Hulk Hogan as penguin emperor for a while?

The independent in my reference to D/I. He was nothing special, but he did little damage either.

Yes. And, Arne Carlson was a Republican. Sure he was an old school non-derp Republican but he was still a Republican.

Carlson would be a Democrat in any other state and the IR's endorsed Grunseth, Quist, and McFarland over him in succession. Of modern issues, he campaigned tirelessly against voter ID...and is a big supporter of Obama. He was really the Independent in I/R.

Until Pawlenty, this state was bipartisan liberal. And after him, its been D controlled. If MN Republicans continue to mirror the nation's, look for them to be a permanent out of favor opposition party.

538 runs the numbers on an interesting question: what's the breakdown of marriages by political affiliation?

For heterosexual marriages, with ladies first:
Code:
.25 DD
.04 ID
.03 RD
.06 DI
.15 II
.05 RI
.06 DR
.05 IR
.30 RR

There's lots more great analysis because it's 538, of course there is.
