Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

That's a good resume for the nomination, but it doesn't reach far past the GOP core. If you're Walker, how do you win the general?

It's actually not too bad of a strategy. One of the reasons McCain and Romney lost is that they spent so much time pandering to the middle that they forgot about their base, which led to them either not wanting to go to the polls or going third party. Dubya motivated the neo-con base and ran on an actual platform, reseulting in him getting a second term.

I must have missed the liberal positions Mittens took. Was there a parallel election taking place in fantasyland?

Rover, Rover, Rover. Don't you know that even though Mitt had none he wasn't psycho enough for the Republican base? That equals "Liberal Positions" in Repub speech.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Debates could end up being a bloodbath. For the most part the people running for Prez (Cruz, Paul, Walker) aren't team players, and you have two guys from the same state (Bush, Rubio) who HAVE to knock the other one off early. Add to that the single issue candidates (Graham on how the Iraq War was a swell idea, Paul & his black helicopter theories) and let the games begin. In a two person race (Obama-Hillary) you don't need to be outrageous to get attention. In a 20 candidate race, you really need to start lobbing some bombs when you get your 5 minutes on stage.

I think this is all well said, but from watching Survivor and The Bachelorette for so many years I've learned the guy who throws the bombs clears the field, but he's not the one who is left standing. What one of these guys really needs is a shill who goes out there and assassinates everybody else, self-immolating in the process, but leaving his secret ally above the fray to act Presidential. Then, depending on the how the math works out, the shill gets rewarded in whatever coin appeals to him -- Veep, Secretary of Graft, or US ambassador to the Republic of Topless Teen Political Groupies.

I remember watching the Winter Olympics (can't remember which one) where in speed skating a bunch of people tripped over each other near the finish line, and the guy in last place skated around everybody sprawled out on the ice and won the gold medal. I'm curious who in the GOP will be able to hang back while the rest of the top guys jump all over each other, and then when the dust settles he glides around everyone else lying bloody on the floor and into the nomination. That's going to take a lot of savvy and self discipline, something Cruz/Paul/etc aren't known for. Jeb Bush probably has those skills but I doubt he can hang back during these debates. In fact he's most likely going to have the biggest target on this back. If he goes down then its a total free for all.

I guess so! I can't think of one position Mittens moderated on. Heck he even abandoned his own freakin' law in order to appease the knuckledragger crowd.

I've got just two words for you: brokered convention. :)

That would make Chicago '68 look like a church picnic. 'ELLO, CLEVELAND!!!!

Chicago 68 was not a brokered convention. It was when the machine was overthrown by the activists (Dick Daley was not a happy camper). HHH was a first ballot nominee.

The "fun" was ouside the convention hall where CPD was cracking the skulls of Mark Rudd and his ilk.

Re: Campaign 2016 -- Don't Let the Perfect Become the Enemy of the Good

Kep,

Just think back to the last election...after each debate the GOP had a new frontrunner. Then someone new would declare, they were the new frontrunner until the next debate and...well you know. Now it is the same clown car only with a few new "winners" none of whom are good enough to win on their own. This is like a high school election, each candidate sucks but will get his friends to vote for him...

The best chance of pulling the "Survivor" strategy is if they wait until the debates to declare. (like Thompson tried to do but stunk at) Let the group thin out, let the dirt start flying then sneak in and be one step ahead. The right candidate can pull that off because there is still plenty of other nimrods to rip to shreds. (they wont form a coalition together even to fight a winning candidate)

And here is the even better part, even if say Walker came in and was doing well, he cant choose any of these know nothings as Veep because they all have the baggage he (and the people supporting him) is trying to avoid. If he chooses Jeb then he has the Dubya Monkey on his back, Rubio brings about the amnesty issue, Perry brings his stupidity, Huckabee brings the Duggers, Santorum brings the bigotry, Carson brings the lulz...etc. If he goes rogue he risks another Palin so that is out the party wont risk it even to defeat a Clinton. So it is all but a guarantee that every positive he has will be offset when he sells out to get a shot at the Oval Office and in the general that plus the way he has really screwed Wisconsin will be too much weight against a political machine like Hillary has.

Great article on Scott Walker and why his leadership is right for America.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/24/u...wisconsin.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&_r=0

If he cant even end gridlock in the Wisconsin Legislature with his party even calling him out, how will he end gridlock in Washington? I am telling you Scooby even if Hillary had unpaid interns doing her campaign she can beat this guy. He is not The Great White Hope the GOP thinks he is. Even Ann Coulter only wants him for VP ;)

Yeah, but he wants a 20 week abortion ban on his desk and he doesn't want exceptions for rape and incest when he gets it. Add that to his war rhetoric and his dismantling of public labor unions and you have the GOP trifecta.

Then he's white, new, not from Washington, and a Governor of a purple state and you have repubgasm all over America.

At this point, the only way gridlock is going to be ended in DC is another revolution or war between the states. This country is so polarized it's not even funny, and no candidate can unite them at this point. Obummer tried to be Hitler, but he got called out.

After 20 weeks, it's a little late to claim rape and incest. When it happens, you take all precautions as soon as able.

Immediately after it happens, a woman might not know she's pregnant. Immediately after it happens, she might be too scared and fragile to think about anything other than the invasion of her body that she just endured, or the intimidation from her attacker. It would be easy for some women to have 20 weeks go by before they can make such a decision. We would hope they're in a better place to make that decision earlier, but life isn't all primroses and lollipops.

You're attempt to argue abortion rights with a poster who recently stated that only in America would we glorify "does who can't keep their legs closed".

Good luck!

That silence you hear is the sound of Jeb relaxing in wait until the GOP comes back to its only real alternative.

Which is why they will most likely all gang up on him for the get go. Big mistake last time was not trying to take Romney out early. The difference is Mittens was running against a bunch of has-beens and never-were's, while Jebbers is facing people who have been elected to office sometime this decade so presumably their instincts are a little sharper. I'd also add that in 2012 nobody could realistically picture Santorum, Cain or Newt getting the nomination. This time around it could be Walker, Cruz, Bush or Rubio, etc so the knives are going to be out. Rubio especially HAS to take Bush down if he's serious about getting the nomination.

Walker just expanded gun rights in Wisconsin. It's all over but the crying.

I am still waiting for you to put your money where your mouth is. You chickened out on your Romney guarantee will you do the same with Walker :D
