Really? How will the whole "the only way to take care of a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" thing work if we can't have guns everywhere?

I would love to see a law banning possession of all firearms within 1 mile of any school. Good luck with that, though.

Now that fellow (in the video) was clearly not in North Dakota, but if he would have been he would have been in clear violation of state law:

ND Century Code 62.1-02-05. Possession of a firearm or dangerous weapon at a public gathering - Penalty - Application.
1. An individual who possesses a firearm or dangerous weapon at a public gathering is guilty of a class B misdemeanor. For the purpose of this section, "public gathering" includes athletic or sporting events, schools or school functions, churches or church functions, political rallies or functions, musical concerts, and individuals in publicly owned parks where hunting is not allowed by proclamation and publicly owned or operated buildings.

A polling station is clearly a "political function". I guess I couldn't tell if that was a publicly owned building.

And yes, that stick is a "dangerous weapon" per:

62.1-01-01. General definitions.
As used in this title, unless the context otherwise requires:

County benchmarks for key races. Obviously they don't help if you don't see the county results, but in 2012 there were plenty of sites that actually posted all the way down to the precinct level more or less realtime from the declaration of counts.

This is a good time to live as a political junkie. God bless the interwebs.

Polling places are covered by federal and state laws which generally severely restrict activities by advocates of any stripe, to avoid intimidating voters. And that includes your interior decorator friends at the NBPP,

Sorry about the flippancy, but I do think there is a danger in passing (possibly even in repeatedly proposing) laws that are ineffectual and/or unenforceable, in that they reduce everyone's respect for the rule of law. We do share a desire to reduce violence, but things like "ban guns within 1 mile of schools" are just silly and do more harm than good.
What would it be like if such a thing passed into law? I passed within a mile of 4 schools on the way home from work. One of them (the one bridge into the Keweenaw Peninsula) does not have an alternative land route. The others are on the main trunk line into that hunter's paradise, Keweenaw County. Would you put up roadblocks to confiscate all weapons on every street that passes within a mile? Would you confiscate the guns of everyone that lives in these little towns that have a school at their center? Enforcing it would require a huge National Guard recruiting effort, a huge staff of agents to man all the roadblocks, a massive emigration of all the citizens that care out of the towns and somewhere to put them, etc. etc. All over the country. It's not feasible by any stretch.
To the larger point, an example of silly laws diminishing respect for the law: Michigan passed "Quality Deer Management" hunting regs a few years ago. Before you shoot a buck, you're supposed to count it's points, how many on each side, measure how long they are in inches, etc. to make sure it's legal. So now most hunters just keep the tag in their pockets. If the deer they shoot is legal, they might tag it. If it's not, they just haul it to camp and do their own hack job of butchering it, and keep the tag for another day. These people were mostly law-abiding until the law became absurd. It's the same way with varying trout length requirements in single streams. Nobody's going to haul that book around and look up every fish based on what mile of the river you're on. You're just going to lose all respect for the lawmakers and keep whatever you want to. (not me on any of these terrible crimes, of course, it's just what I've heard - I'll plead the fifth)

I'll buy your point about the impracticality of a law that is too broad. That is also very different from the ideological position that no regulation is allowed on guns (as opposed to the regulations in every other amendment-guaranteed right). I do recognize that you were not defending the latter position.

I know. I'm actually starting to get on board with requiring gun safety training, home security measures, and a few sensible things like that. I don't think any more laws will do any good against Eric Harris types, but they might save toddlers from shooting each other while they're playing in dad's bedroom.

Against the school shootings, I don't see any law that can be passed that would do more good than harm unless it's in the area of funding outreach and mental health. The best thing we can do as individuals is get to know some kids. Be open to them. Ask them what the best part and the worst part of their day was. Be a good example. It doesn't have to be your own offspring, but there are kids all over that are dying just for someone to talk to about their angsty lives.
