Re: Campaign 2014: The Epic Struggle To Win The Senate And Change Nothing
While not "unassailable" it is really good news for an experienced pol with a strong organization and a well-funded ground game when he's leading in October, even by a couple points. Exactly as you say, electorates do tend to revert to the lean, and incumbency carries lots of very helpful properties (up to and including flat out bribery of donors and constituents -- c.f. the Tory campaign in Scotland). The other thing is: with a high profile "divisive" pol like McConnell, if he hasn't convinced you he's incompetent and/or criminal all on his own then nothing the opponent does the last 30 days is going to move you.
The real surprise to me is especially with all the bad news this summer the GOP should be utterly, dramatically ROCKIN IT. What else could they reasonably have hoped for as a playing field? They're going to drag the carcass over the line with just enough margin to relieve the pressure to make uncomfortable changes. That has consequences up and down the chain. As horrible as the 80's were for the Democrats, the "blessing in disguise" is it was so embarrassing and obvious that it forced big changes. In contrast, the GOP is the frog in the pot.
I am amused how a 2 or 4 point lead when its like 42-38 or something suddenly becomes an unassailable margin. That goes for any race no matter who's running.
