Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Oil companies don’t want to touch anwr because they know if the Dems every take the trifecta that entire investment is fucked.
It's also fucking expensive to invest in equipment to extract from there. At the current price of oil, it doesn't make sense.

Same with the Alberta oil sands. Until oil was regularly ~$80/bbl it wasn't worth it. I'm sure even Canada is feeling the pinch with oil at <$60/bbl.

This. It's super expensive. I mean the only major oil company left in Alaska is ConocoPhillips.

Dumb question but can't they just put a field on hold when its expected value goes negative? Or are you talking about the (I'm sure enormous) expense of initial development of the field?

I believe they are talking about development and that cost only seems to go up.

If/when a field goes idle, they either have to extract the equipment, which is expensive, or you have capital tied up, not making money. It’s a big risk to the company.

Yes and no. You can’t idle chemical factories and refineries easily. Once a factory idles, especially something as hazardous as extraction, it’s insanely expensive. Start-ups and shutdowns are the most expensive and dangerous operations at any plant.

The procedures to shut down and restart a single unit are fairly thick. An entire extraction plant has to be insane.

That said, petroleum is admittedly a bit different than the chemical world I’m from. But it’s still very difficult and expensive.

Initial development. You have to transport a lot of highly specialized equipment to a very very remote location. That’s on top of the fact that said equipment has to be engineered to survive at -50 and be able to traverse permafrost. Not to mention constructing all of the buildings and roads, and transporting the equipment to do that.
