I dont think dentralization will ever work. People want stuff easily digestible. It might be popular with Zoomers but that is about it.

And yeah if bluesky had come first it would have won. It didn't and they missed their window. Now by the time they do open Threads will be everywhere. (Already is because it is linked to Insta) This isn't about the first to a million...Threads is already over 20 million and in upwards of 100 countries if you believe their internal hype. Hell even if they inflated it Trump style bluesky is playing from way behind and doesn't offer anything of value to flip since Jack is a freak RFK Jr. lover and Fascist. All things being equal people are too lazy to really make big changes unless they are forced. (Facebook and Twitter)

It's like the old allegory about when Jobs and Gates fought because Gates put out Windows based on stuff he learned from Apple. (Which Apple got from Xerox) Jobs argued people would stick with Apple because their stuff was better. Gates argued it didn't matter because they were first. Jobs was soon fired and Gates became the richest man in the world.

Zuck did to Jack what Zuck did to tbe Winklevosses.

I haven't checked Threads out yet only because (you are forced?) to be linked up with facebook, and I do not get on FB to avoid the derp family I can't unfollow.

It absolutely was a race to some membership mark. It's critical mass. Maybe it wasn't a million but there was a critical mass that would bring over everyone.

The problem with threads is going to be is if it ends up being a sh!!t product, it'll really struggle. I think what's going to happen is a fracturing of the communities within twitter. Each ____twit community will pick a place and that'll be it. People who want to hear about stupid siht like the Kardashians will move to instagram, people with a brain will move to bluesky (or whatever fediverse wins) or maybe even reddit* (though less likely). Some have already moved to Discord, which I find hilarious that we're back to chatrooms.

Your criticism of Jack basically applies to every single platform owner. Zuck, Jack, Elon, hell, probably even Myspace Tom. They're all bad. Jack is just a little less worse than Elon and doesn't seem to make it his company's goal to platform and force these assholes down your throat like Elon. Or more likely he's just not a complete fucking idiot about it.

Apple's stuff wasn't better, it was simpler. It just worked. But you have fewer knobs and dials to turn. They've been turned for you to the average setting.

*my favorite part about the different social media platforms is that each of them hates the other and thinks the membership is a bunch of whiny bitches, but they almost all perfectly overlap. Twitter (as a group) looks down on Reddit. Reddit looks down on Twitter. Everyone hates Facebook. etc.

Biggest reason I haven't bailed on Twitter yet is they still have a chronological order timeline and despite my likes and interests being scattered like a dart board, i have a few things I like seeing as they happen. So breaking news (I follow a bunch of traffic updates thanks to my job), hockey news, live sports updates, coming at me hours or days later isn't good.

It's weird seeing a Facebook or Instagram post about a good hockey/baseball play days or weeks after it happens.

I really do need to cull my social media follows. Maybe cut all the extra crap from Facebook and just leave it more as just friends/acquaintances.

Hey you leave Tom alone! He travels the world taking pictures or something!

(I already said they are all awful...)

I think you would have a point if there was choices now. There just isn't. Every time something tried everyone went back to Twitter cause it was easy and worked. No one wants to wait for an invite or have to figure out decentralization. They want to log in and see stuff. Threads made that possible without jumping through hoops...especially if you already have insta.

Unless something comes along quickly it will barely make a dent. Threads had a built in advantage (celebrities and influencers are there anyway with huge followings on insta that will join them) and is stacking the deck. Hell I would bet money bluesky never launches. Any competition will be predicated on Threads screwing something up...which it will but by then it won't matter.

If Threads started from scratch I would 100% bet against it...but it started with a 3 goal lead and a 5x3 pp going into the third period. They have money to burn, a sociopath in charge and over a billion instagram subscribers worldwide ready to shift over. To put that in perspective last year Twitter had just under 370 million in 2022 which was the high water mark. Elon poked the wrong bear...

Speaking of Elmo they are accusing Meta of poaching Twitter employees...that is what happens when you screw over your workers Elmo.

I never use Facebook. Twitter has a good timeline but I'm sick of the vitriol. They tweaked the algo to promote anger and I am tired of the things I actually want to read buried under a story some bot retweeted to get people fighting. Twitter was bad before but Elmo drank turpentine and pizzed all over it.

In all honesty, what is he doing? Is it just that it's entirely separated from his assets so he isn't actually losing any money?

He is losing billions of his own...but more importantly billions of the Saudis money as well.

Be careful what you wish for. I’m no fan of Elon but not sure the world will be a better place if twitter goes under.

I get what you're saying, but the same could be said of chatrooms, message boards, myspace, etc. Which is to say, communication will evolve or migrate to something else.

To your point, we've never really had a *THUD* ending to any of these. They evolved to their current state over years and years not... weeks or months.

More than likely this will be the winner. Mastadon is a non-starter and bluesky is already showing signs of giving up. Threads signed up more people in 12 hours than bluesky will in likely its first year. (if it ever gets there, and I doubt it does since they are still on a waitlist and are pausing)

It is all about who is first to be adopted easily and Threads won. For now it is fun because no one knows what to make of it...reminds me of Facebook back when it came around and opened up to colleges outside the elites. (and I assume Twitter, which I didn't use until it was much more popular) The fun won't last unless they stick to pretty strong moderation which they likely won't in the long run cause they need money.

As for giving Meta clicks, what's the difference at this point? Unless you are The Rube using a flip phone and paying for everything with checks we are all being tracked 24/7. (and he posts online so he is tracked anyways) There is no way out of it. The Fascists that run Google and Apple are no better than the Fascists that run Meta or Bluesky. They are all a bunch of tech bro d-bags and overeducated monsters leveraging everything about us to make more money. None of them are worth supporting, but we don't live in a world that allows for that anymore. So all we can do is destroy them one by one! Up first is Elmo! Watching Twitter dissolve (along with the money the Saudis gave him) is delicious. He wanted a fight with Zuck, and his fat bald Apartheid loving azz is taking it in the tailpipe because Zuck is smarter than him.

Soon Zuck will screw up and people will abandon him too. He is too arrogant not too. Unless he learned his lesson by allowing certain things to run rampant on Facebook to keep click counts up I give this about a year before it becomes a hellscape like Twitter. Of course, Twitter basically force fed it to you the last couple years...not doing that alone will make this easier to digest.

We will see...for now I just like seeing journalists show up and act like kids on Christmas because their feed isn't filled with angry bots and dudes in sunglasses taking selfies in their trucks whining about the Jews and how Trump won in 2020.

Threads: Like Twitter, but run by a different d-bag. ;-)

Twitter's positive impact on the world is minimal and easily replaced. Overall it is the worst of social media to begin with outside of ultra anarchist sites like 8chan. It will not be missed at all.

Man...You can definitely feel the changes at Twitter in the last 48 hours. Meanwhile Threads has already passed 10% of Twitters total user base in that time and it is still going at a strong clip. Even Elmo Lovers in the media are saying he screwed the pooch big time.

It remains to be seen how viable and dynamic Threads will become. So far the majority of content I see is from very few creators none of whom I follow. I'm not sure I live the formatting/interface but that could just be due to a lack of familiarity. I surely hope it becomes worthy of leading me to delete Twitter altogether
