Could we just take this opportunity to... end the addiction?

I think we can all agree it has done a lot of harm.

Assuming Zuck's new 'Threads' spinoff is the future, I think this might be my exit from all social media. I don't really have much interest in giving Meta anymore of my clicks ever since I quit Facebook in January 2017.

Personally the For You tabs and algorithm based feeds ruin social media apps for me. Facebook was far better when it was a chronological timeline. Twitter also attempted to get rid of that. Not sure how many times I had to turn my feed back to chronological after they “helped” switch me to the “top tweets” sorting. After awhile they finally just split that into the For You and Following.

All the curated feed seems to do is make it more insular and creates a feedback loop. Yeah, this person posts five times a day and so I see them more by default. That doesn’t mean I want their posts to be boosted over the other person I follow who posts once a week. Some apps don’t even have the option for chronological, others do but it reverts back after awhile, and some do but it seems broken, not showing posts that were only posted minutes ago in the “top post” section.

Good luck with that. We'll end our addiction to fossil fuels before we end our addiction to Being Online.

There's nothing wrong with Being Online.

But I would be willing* to give up the Cafe and all these threads about politics and news, and just stick to college hockey, if we could all live in a world where we backed out of this blind alley.

TBH, the thing that would do it is a nominal charge. I love you guys but if it cost me a quarter a post I wouldn't do it. I'd write some of you letters, though.

* If you forced me.

I oppose this idea, but only because I am paid for this. Refresh the pages and click the ads, you slackers!

I know there’s a prop in CA about property taxes and I think it limits how much of an increase is allowed, but I just about fell over looking at my cousins property online.

Silicon Valley, house valued near 4m- yet they are assessed about half of what I’m assessed in Edina (in a house valued bets 6-650 now).

da heck

When I first saw this post, I thought I was under the "Mental Health Thread" and you were talking about fentanyl addiction. I thought "What an ignorant a--hole." My apologies. I'll get rid of the 'ignorant' part of that thought.

As for social media, I haven't used any since 2017, and that was only Facebook. Never had Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Mastodon, bluesky, etc., etc. account. I post on here and occasionally GPL. That's about it.

It’s shocking how bad Facebook is now. I went on for the first time in three or four weeks a couple days ago and it was all nonsense posts and ads from people/things I don’t even follow. I scrolled for a bit and there were hardly any posts from people I am friends with. It’s been on the decline for awhile but at this point it’s completely useless.

I'm done until there's a winner

More than likely this will be the winner. Mastadon is a non-starter and bluesky is already showing signs of giving up. Threads signed up more people in 12 hours than bluesky will in likely its first year. (if it ever gets there, and I doubt it does since they are still on a waitlist and are pausing)

It is all about who is first to be adopted easily and Threads won. For now it is fun because no one knows what to make of it...reminds me of Facebook back when it came around and opened up to colleges outside the elites. (and I assume Twitter, which I didn't use until it was much more popular) The fun won't last unless they stick to pretty strong moderation which they likely won't in the long run cause they need money.

As for giving Meta clicks, what's the difference at this point? Unless you are The Rube using a flip phone and paying for everything with checks we are all being tracked 24/7. (and he posts online so he is tracked anyways) There is no way out of it. The Fascists that run Google and Apple are no better than the Fascists that run Meta or Bluesky. They are all a bunch of tech bro d-bags and overeducated monsters leveraging everything about us to make more money. None of them are worth supporting, but we don't live in a world that allows for that anymore. So all we can do is destroy them one by one! Up first is Elmo! Watching Twitter dissolve (along with the money the Saudis gave him) is delicious. He wanted a fight with Zuck, and his fat bald Apartheid loving azz is taking it in the tailpipe because Zuck is smarter than him.

Soon Zuck will screw up and people will abandon him too. He is too arrogant not too. Unless he learned his lesson by allowing certain things to run rampant on Facebook to keep click counts up I give this about a year before it becomes a hellscape like Twitter. Of course, Twitter basically force fed it to you the last couple years...not doing that alone will make this easier to digest.

We will see...for now I just like seeing journalists show up and act like kids on Christmas because their feed isn't filled with angry bots and dudes in sunglasses taking selfies in their trucks whining about the Jews and how Trump won in 2020.

Yup. My FIL bought in the 70s, we bought in 2021. His house is worth at least twice of ours, but assessed at around a third of ours.

Eh, maybe. First to sign up a million won't always win. Almost always. But the content there is terrible. Bluesky so far has had the best community in terms of what I was looking for. People just want Twitter without Musk. If Jack had opened up bluesky last week it would ahve crushed threads.

Agree on Mastodon. It's fully dead. Everyone there basically migrated to bluesky. That said, I think if they make all of these open to the fediverse protocol (or whatever it's called) then that's the ideal solution. Basically have different servers you can jump between if necessary with the features and content you want.
