We could get used to this. And we kind of have already, haven’t we? We’ve grown quite accustomed to the springtime sight of women wearing maroon-and-gold hockey jerseys, throwing their sticks in jubilation, wildly mobbing their goalie, and hoisting hardware high above their heads.
The University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team claimed its fifth Division 1 national title on Sunday, winning a three-
overtime thriller against Cornell. With the game on the verge of entering a fourth overtime period, Bulldogs freshman winger Jessica Wong got her stick on a shot and tipped the puck through the legs of the Cornell goalie, setting off the celebration in which we can all join.
UMD is 5-1 in NCAA title games, 11-2 in Frozen Four contests and 15-4 in NCAA play. Even more impressive, Minnesota Duluth is 8-0 in Frozen Four matchups played in its own state of Minnesota; four of its five national championships were won on home-state ice.
So when Sunday’s deciding duel was scheduled for Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, and UMD earned a berth, the outcome may have seemed preordained, a matter of destiny, and something to which we’re accustomed.
But not yet ready to take for granted: The ultimate prize is too sweet for that.
The Bulldogs of UMD weren’t the only maroon-and-gold-clad, all-female team to come out on top this weekend. The Barnum Bombers girls basketball team won a state championship on Saturday, avenging three previous near-misses over the past four seasons. Barnum trounced Goodhue in the Class A title tilt at Target Center in Minneapolis.
Congratulations to both teams. And thanks for celebrations in which all the Northland could participate.
Duluth Mayor Don Ness has proclaimed Friday as “Coach Shannon Miller Day” to celebrate the UMD Bulldog women’s hockey team’s fifth national NCAA championship.
Miller will receive her proclamation Friday at the team’s community celebration at 7 p.m. in the Holiday Inn in downtown Duluth. The team won the 2010 championship Sunday in Minneapolis with a 3-2, triple-overtime win over Cornell.
“We in Duluth believe that Shannon Miller is the premier coach in the history of women's hockey,’’ Ness notes. “Her teams play with passion, determination, grit and tremendous skill, which has earned the respect and loyalty of this hockey-obsessed city. After 11 incredible seasons that include five national championships, it is clear that Coach Miller is one of the most outstanding leaders in college athletics. Duluthians understand how fortunate we are to have Coach Miller at UMD, this proclamation is just a simple thank you. We look forward to many more years of successful teams, accomplished student athletes, and more national championships!”
Miller has an overall record of 291-78-31 and has led the Bulldogs to nine NCAA playoff appearances.
My photos from the UMD-MN semi-final game are posted. There are a lot of "artsy-fartsy" shots in there, largely because the players have indicated to me that they love them. I enjoy playing around with the photos that way myself. I continually struggle trying to get the maroon uniforms to look maroon--so often they come up looking anywhere from black to mud....guess it is why I am not a professional sports photographer. Still, hope others enjoy them.
Wow, I simply have to vent my frustration. After a wonderful celebration reception last night for the 5X NCAA champion women's team the DNT in it's infinite wisdom has a huge story in sports about the optimism for NEXT season's MEN's team!! What the hell?????????? And then buried at the end of that story was a short blurb about Blais tieing for scoring leader . . . Sickening. They did virtually no coverage of the team all season "stories" consisted of recaps culled from box scores then they cover themselves by puting the picture that on the whold above the fold after the championship . . . how much more frustrating can it get?
And, we wonder why people don't come to women's games???
!!!!
Best quote of the night from Michelle McAteer (UMD player alum and current assistant coach):
Q: So, you were on the bench as a player against Harvard for the 2 OT game and now as a coach against Cornell in 3 OTs. What was the difference?
A: The biggest difference was 4 1/2 hours in high heels!!!!
That is absolutely ridiclous!! Your so right!! Remind me, how many National Championships have the men won?? Unbelievable......No other Women's Hockey team in the country has won 5 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! GET A CLUE DNT!!!
Anybody know much about some of our incoming girls?
Jenna McParland is definitely a player you will like to watch. QUOTE]
FYI, McParland scored the tying goal late in the 3rd peiod tonight for Canada to send it to OT vs the US for the u18 world championship....UMD will love the fact that she makes a habit of scoring HUGE goals when it counts the most.
After being down 3-1 in the first, Canada mounted a comeback for a 5-4 win 3 minutes into overtime.
