Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

... I really wanna see Hokey Langan play after reading about her most of the season.
She's not a flashy player -- IMO, Spooner is more memorable. Langan is the type of player who does a lot of things well.

Oh, and both team's will be Touminen-less although being w/o a senior co-captain would figure to make a bigger impact.

Hopefully they play like the 5 periods AFTER last Friday's first period.. won't have a 'rivalry' to boost their level of play so the players need to bring it from the start.

John Gilbert has a good story on the WCHA site today:

Tightened WCHA Race Proves Turnabout for UMD Coach Miller

The only thing I see hurting the Bulldogs this weekend is their occasional tendency this season to lose focus. But they still have an outside shot at the regular season title with help and a lot of good hockey, so I hope they bring it to the DECC and to Bemidji next week. I never would've figured the Bulldogs would be legitimate contenders for the national title this season and not have Wisconsin to deal with. I know all the teams are dealing with this being an Olympic year, but go figure. I like this kind of surprise.

Got the 'official' letter in the mail yesterday regarding the move of the first round playoff series to the Heritage Center instead of having a DECC doubleheader series with the men playing the Goofs. The Men are then gone to Alaska during the WCHA tourney at Ridder so for ONCE I should make it south for this years WCHA Final 4 or whatever they call it now (not to jinx the women before their playoffs start.)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Tonight.. Ohio State made last Saturday night's UMD/Minnesota game look tame. They are WAY too good a team to play as dirty as they do and I'm sure it costs them some games.

I didn't see the number on the player that knocked Friddy out for most of the third period.. a kneeing at the blue line that Friddy never saw coming.. was definitely the 5 minute variety and the only whistle was after, to get her off the ice.

Kacy Ambroz stepped up and played the first line for Friddy most of the third period and OT.. until about 1:30 left in Overtime.. Friddy showed up on the ice.. for 10 seconds or so to test her knee on a shift.. then skated right back off.. BUT.. she then came back on the ice on a line change and found herself in the right spot at the right time to bury a Emmanuelle Blais rebound for the game winner.

She could barely bend down to get her stick after the mob along the boards.. to think what she's done with a shoulder separation most of this season, and to get the game winning goal on one wheel is guts. I almost don't expect her to play tomorrow when her injured knee will probably swell and stiffen some overnight, BUT she's looked like a no-go so many times this season with her shoulder that we shouldn't be surprised if she's on the ice for the first shift Saturday (6 pm start btw!)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Friddy ought to wear a big "S" on the front of her jersey. Holy crap, that kid has guts.

This was a really, really disjointed game, no flow at all to it. Way too scrappy, way too sloppy, but I'll take a win. And the Gophers LOST to St. Cloud tonight, which means the Dogs are now just one point behind them. The Gophers travel to St. Cloud tomorrow night to get their butts handed to them while we take over first place in the league after scrapping out another sweep.

And Mankato beats Wisconsin. I don't get that at all.

Not pretty, but it's a win.

Ummm... not quite. It went to a shootout, so despite the loss, the Gophers picked up a point and are still two ahead of the 'Dogs. It could be tied up after Saturday's action... we'll see.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Actually the Gophers got a point for the overtime tie.. so we're TWO points behind still.

I wouldn't mind seeing a UMD blowout on Senior night.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Yup, my mistake on the points. But we could tie for the league lead after tomorrow. That works for me with a road trip to Bemidji for us and Wisconsin playing the Gophers next weekend. I like that a lot.

Or you could be four down. There are no dominant teams in the league this year -- the outcome is in doubt every time. The 'Dogs get outshot 45-24 and that's good enough for two points; Minnesota has a 37-14 edge on SCSCU and only gets them one. Rosters are thin, so an injury here or there can have a huge impact. I didn't think it was over when we were 7 up, and I don't think it will be over no matter what happens tomorrow.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Shots from tonight's overtime win...I pulled a bonehead and didn't shoot Friddy scoring the game winner.. was caught up in noticing she was back out there after taking a short 10-15 second skate a shift earlier.

Kind of hard to tell.. but OSU's goaltender Knapp got lucky on this one..the puck landed on the outside of her glove on the webbing with Blais and Ambroz ready to pounce.

One of Harss's many saves..

She saw a lot of shots, but they weren't nearly the same quality shots the Gophers put on her last weekend. There were some flurries when the Buckeye first line was out there, with them getting 22 shots between the three players, but it wasn't a complete barrage of pucks like the output from all three Gopher lines on Friday night especially.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Shot total don't mean much in the women's game. Most are little more than passes to the goaltender or shots to the goalie's midsection. Take too long to get the shot off. Very few snipers who can pull the trigger. Goalies are definitely ahead of the shooters. Also, it would be nice to see a game without phantom penalties. Both OSU and UMD had to deal with them.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I thought the Dogs looked a bit flat-footed most of the game . . . maybe save for the first 5-8 minutes of the 2nd. But, I too am just happy for the win. If they could only have just put more shots on goal they'd have won the game a bit easier. Knapp just didn't look good for OSU in goal. The game winner by Friddy is what they needed to be doing all night . . . put it on goal, crash the net and make something good happen.

That 5 on 3 PP they had was the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. And, Joce's penalty that lead to the game tying goal by OSU was pure lazy. Never should have happened.

Hoping for a better effort for senior night.

I don't think the Dogs ONCE on their 5 on 3 tried to get the puck deep.. they kept trying to skate it in and got it poked away over and over.. shoot it deep and forecheck more players than they can backcheck.. to keep the puck deep.

One of the turnovers on that 5 on 3 powerpaly led to a 2 on 1 breakaway that Ohio State shot wide on.

Anyway.. Kim Martin, Elin Holmlov, Erika Holst, Pernilla Winberg, Jenni Asserholt, and Maria Rooth, take on Switzerland in 2 hours (2 PM CST!) on CNBC in the opening women's hockey game of Vancovuer 2010!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Not much you can say about tonight's game.. I just hope it was from the emotion of seniors playing their last games at the DECC (unless somehow they get a home seed for NCAA's and it's not moved FROM the DECC) and they re-right the ship in Bemidji.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I meant to say the Buckeyes did their part, too, in contributing to the suckage that was this weekend. Oy. And now it's on to Bemidji and hopefully the Bulldogs will take it out on the Beavers. Good thing Tomcikova is in Vancouver. I'm guessing the Gophers won't have much trouble with Wisconsin, but who knows.

The Dogs should get an NCAA Regional game at the DECC if they don't pull another fast one like this weekend. We'll see how they recover. If I'm not mistaken, this was the most goals they've given up this season even if one was an empty-netter.

(Sorry for the multiple posts to those who subscribe to this thread. It wasn't showing my posts as going through, so I tried a few times and they're all going to show up in your email. Enjoy.)

It's been a long, long time since the Badgers were anything but trouble for the Gophs. Given that with our current lineup we are having trouble stopping opponents from scoring, and we haven't scored well in an even longer time, I'm not going to make any assumptions about points until they are actually won. I would definitely take any help that the Beavers are prepared to give.
