Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

first it was gaudreau couldn't get by unh admissions and now it's that bu didn't have a scholarship. next it will be he didn't like merrimack's dining options.

Waaah. Next you are going to tell me Eichel grew up a BC fan! :p

I heard The Mack serves a mean pepper steak on Tuesdays.

Cute about the "dining option" but Gaudreau did ask Parker about a scholarship after Northeastern fired their coach.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

Anybody see Red Gendron's press conference? Seems like an interesting character.

Does anyone know where on-line to see the tape of Red's press conference? I didn't see it and would like to.

Oh he's a character alright. And a very unhappy character this morning to be sure.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

My thoughts:

1) Shameless name dropping by Tater. Although he's hanging out with a better class of celebrities. Used to be he'd post about meeting John Gotti. ;)

2) If Parker could have gotten Gaudreau but couldn't find a scholarship for him with a team full of stiffs, he should have been fired immediately.

3) Not concerned about the team riding Eichel. Oksanen's ability to bury the puck shouldn't be discounted (Saponari, anyone?). I also think the other lines will come around. This is a young team still adjusting to who does what, but at least they don't stand around and wait for Eichel to do something.

4) D is much, much better than I thought they'd be at this point of the season.

From what I remember it was just before the season and Parker wanted to give him Coyle's scholarship. I'm pretty sure BU uses all of their scholarships and don't have extras just laying around and I don't think you can just take a guy's scholarship away a few months before classes start. If you can I'm glad that Parker didn't because that would be completely classless. So yeah, that's one of the reasons BU fans hate Coyle. He held the scholarship so BU couldn't give it to Gaudreau and than bailed halfway through the year. Also Parker was basically fired very shortly thereafter. They couldn't really fire him, but I'm sure that was one event that really increased the pressure on him to step down. You know, that and the whole Trivino/Nicastro thing.

I have heard this before, and the logic doesn't work. Yes, if Coyle left after the season it would have freed up another scholarship, but BU would have used that to then get someone else to replace him. And then it would have been gone by the time Gaudreau decommited from NU in August, and then BU still doesn't have a scholarship to offer Gaudreau and he still goes to BC.* But anything to blame on Coyle...

Side note I saw a BU fan wearing a Coyle BU jersey at UConn on Saturday, presumably they got it personalized at the event BU did during the Maine game Friday, was pretty surprising to see.

*ETA: Not at all saying he would have gone to BU if they had a scholly. Just saying it wasn't an option at all because they didn't.

Okay, the part I don't get is how did BC get him them? Presumably York was in the same situation as Parker, in that his scholarships were all allocated, so what gives?

Furthermore, I am all for a player losing a schlorship if he isn't earning it on the ice. IIRC there's 18 full rides to give out, putting aside partials for a minute? Pick the 18th best player on the team still getting a free ride and tell them they aren't performing well enough to earn the equivalent of 60K a year. That's life, and that's what's going to happen if they play in any sort of professional league after college. Then get a star in here. I thought Gaudreau hit the ground running pretty quick his freshman year, so presumably everyone knew what a talent he was.

from the BC side of things, think it was samuelsson leaving which opened one up

Agganis is going to scold you for this...

2-BU was close to freeing up a scholarship for Gaudreau and it had nothing to do with Coyle (as Agganis correctly explains). Another player was going to give up a year but the family changed their mind. [No, I'm not going to say who it was] . Shortly after that fell through, BC had a scholarship open up. Not being able to bring Gaudreau to BU had nothing to do with JP's decision to retire.

3-Seeing more and more positive signs from the other lines. Piccnich has no points yet, but looks ready to contribute: in the right spot, strong on the puck and drives to the net. Third line starting to show some chemistry and skill, too.

4- If Eichel has performed as expected --OK, even better than expected, then Diffley is the most pleasant surprise thus far. Good puck mover, keeps puck-carriers from escaping the boards and holds the puck in the zone particularly well from the off-side. Scouts have noticed, earning him a spot on the NHL Players to Watch list. Somerby has taken a nice step up, too.

Really?? So in your eyes if a kid is promised a 3/4 for example and does not develop as expected, the coach should be able to take scholarship away? Even if the coach was the one in charge of his development. Kid gave up other offers to other schools based upon these representations and now coach can pull it so HE might be able to win an extra game or two? Strange concept..

I highly doubt any of these coaches who make their "offers" have ever said, we will give you a 3/4 but if you dont score, we will take it away!

Philip Samuelsson left early for the pros after the 2011-10 season... used his scholly.
