BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I thought I'd seen some recruiting Dog & Pony shows, but Askew's Excellent Adventure might take the cake. How many schools and franchises has this kid and his family left holding the bag?

Ah this isn't that bad. It's just that it all happened in a small time-frame before he ever even enrolled anywhere.

I know "recruiting" you mention above does imply prior to any enrollment... but if you look at the wider view, I think a guy like Eddie Caron transferring from UNH to Yale to UNH was a classic... That's just me though. Honorable mention to Vinny Saps for his BU to BC (kinda but not really) to NU. Vinny was only slightly less of a crapshow because his BC stint that fell through quicker than Mike Milbury coaching the Eagles was not really his own choice.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Eddie Caron was interesting but it only involved Colleges. This kid went from St. Seb's to Cushing; NU to Indiana and BU; then to Drummondville. He's been Caron on three different levels.

Lowell Sun feature on 2014 recruit Jack Eichel, who will play for the NTDP U18s next season.

Eichel took extra classes last summer and is again taking extra classes this summer, with the goal of returning to Ann Arbor as a senior. He plans to play one more year with the national program and then attend Boston University in the fall of 2014.

He admits to being disappointed that longtime coach Jack Parker retired after last season.

"Obviously I was excited to play for coach Parker," said Eichel, who committed to BU in April 2012. "He's a legend. But obviously I'm excited to play for coach (David) Quinn. I think he's going to be really good for me."

BU just picked up a nice recruit in Charlie McAvoy. Offensive D playing for the USNDT - 17 team.

McAvoy is a right-shot D who played for the NJ Rockets last season and was the Metro Junior Hockey League's Offensive Defenseman of the Year (17-39-56 in 69 games). Was a 6th round draft pick by Kitchener in this year's OHL draft. From Long Island so he's certain to be a Dave Starman favorite. :D

More info on McAvoy, whose NJ Rockets coach compares him to another former Rocket, John Carlson, now on the Caps.

Barring early departures, BU's defense in 2015: Grzelcyk, Oksanen, Somerby, MacAfee, MacLeod, McAvoy.

Not what you would call an intimidating defensive core. No wonder why teams are banging on the door to play BU.

Not close to Carlson. Carlson about 5" taller. Not close speed wise either. Basically an 85% Clendenning

Multiple sources are reporting that BU has a verbal from Shattuck St.Mary's Bantam Tier 1 scoring standout Clayton Keller from Illinois. Had a 53-69-122 line in 54 games. Added 5-2-7 in Bantam Nationals. A '98, he'll arrive in 2016. Two of his Shattuck teammates recently committed to Minnesota.

“Clayton is a tremendous player with exceptional skills. His passing and vision make him a force every time he is on the ice and his hockey IQ is off the charts!” Matt Barnaby, former NHLer and head coach for the 14U Buffalo Regals.

Western Hockey Blog:
It's a huge pick-up for the Terriers and new head coach David Quinn, in an area that BU isn't necessarily known for recruiting from. Keller is just entering the 10th grade this year, so he wouldn't join the Terriers until 2016 at the earliest, but it's a very positive sign for BU's long-term stability to lock up quality players like this.

USHR on Keller at World Select Invitational last April:
Clayton Keller, F, ’98 (New England Nordiques) 5-8/150 — We saw the Shattuck-St. Mary’s forward at Nationals a couple of weeks ago, and wrote that he reminded us of Zach Parise at the same age. We’ll stick with that. The Bellville, Ill. native is an effortless skater with a top-notch skill set. Makes plays every time he touches the puck. Is only going to get better when he begins to fill out. Our only knock on him is that we would like to see him add some more finish to his game — he’s definitely a ‘pass first’ player. Regardless, we’re convinced Keller is a young star in the making.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

That is a great sign for BU's future in recruiting. Memories of BU bringing in Herlofsky (MN) and McKersie (WI) in the same year.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

It was a good weekend for several BU recruits:
--2014 recruit Jack Eichel scored a hat trick in the NTDP U18s 7-3 win against Muskegon.
--2014 recruit J.J. Piccinich scored the overtime winner in Youngstown’s 1-0 win against Lincoln and has a team-leading eight goals.
--2016 recruit Clayton Keller scored a pair for Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep in a 7-4 win vs. Team Northwest. In 15 games, Collier, one of only two sophomores on the two team, has 8-6-14.
