BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec 3?!

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

Honest question, but what benefit would it be to BC to play BU in hoops every year? I'm being completely serious. Anyway, with Jones having worked with Donahue and how coaches always talk about not wanting to play former assistants, who knows if this will continue going forward.

It's true, on paper BC does not have a lot to gain by playing BU every year. On the other hand every major conference team has several OOC games against teams from weaker conferences. This holds true for BC as well. Given that, why shouldn't BC play BU every year when the alternative is to schedule other teams of similar stature such as Bryant, St Francis (NY), Maine, etc etc?

Wouldn't a BC / BU game at least have a chance of turning into something moderately "special" as compared to having the N.J.I.T Highlanders visit Conte?

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

Every major conference team needs to fatten up on mid-major opponents before their conference schedule starts. Having BU as a sacrificial lamb to play at Conte each year would probably benefit both schools, as I'm sure BU would put more fans in the seats than the average non-conference mid-major, and it means less traveling in the early season for BU.

You probably wouldn't get BC to ever play at BU though, unfortunately.

BU/BC hoops is scheduled for this year and two more years. Three seasons of play in total. Alternating Conte/Agganis/Conte. Surprising, I know.

Depending on the outcome of this year and a few other things, I could see them changing it to all three at Conte (unless this is a set-in-stone contract). However, the fact that the three games have been scheduled for certain is already more than I'd anticipated.

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

The issue from BC's POV is the thing that could turn "special" is seeing BU as a "bad loss" when tourney time comes around where the odds of a win vs Bryant, etc are much greater. Granted that won't be an issue this year.

I like the idea of playing more local teams in our OOC though starting with BU, Holy Cross, etc...

As for the program, this rebuilding year was inevitable once Skinner started stacking classes ala UML especially when you add the best player leaving for the NBA as a junior.

I enjoy watching the basketball team even though they might struggle for 10 wins this year -ability to see growth, growing pains, etc...

Because BC doesn't care nearly as much about playing BU as BU does about playing us. BU would be much more up for that game than, say, a similarly talented St. Francis (NY) team. Which means there'd be a bigger chance of an upset.

Hence why I doubted BC would ever travel down Comm Ave to play at Agganis. In my experience when big conference teams travel to mid-majors its anybody's game, but they seldom lose at home. Generally speaking, it's too risky for teams who might potentially be on the tournament bubble to play many games in a mid-major's barn.

Of course, the dynamics of this rivalry are a bit different since you'd probably have a mixed crowd wherever the game is played.

I would respectfully suggest that success in Friday night's game for Boston College is very important.
They remain very thin on the blueline and one would suggest that Saturday night game two for the weekend at Boston University will be tall task for the defensive group of Boston College.

That said, really looking forward to the weekend and these two quality teams going at it.

are you sure this is true? what incentive would bc have to play at agganis?

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

It's a 15 minute bus ride.

That's the only incentive I see and it's not a big one.

Don't give much of a rat's arse about hoops, but I don't imagine you can play every single mid-major contest in your home arena. Your team must have to travel sometimes. I recall Duke coming to BU 20 years ago, as well as Michigan a few years ago. Regarding this particular game, you give your fans an easy away game to travel to in a large arena down the street instead of a far away barn out in the sticks. Why not schedule that game once in awhile?

Regarding hockey (the real reason why we're here) I was unaware of any trouble with BC's defensive corps. Are there some injuries or are some players not playing up to expectations?

Who's in net for the Eagles this weekend? It appears Milner has run into the train that is Brian Billett. Pun intended. :D

A lot of the deals between the majors and mid-majors in basketball are 2-for-1s, like BU and Michigan. BU goes to Michigan twice, and Michigan comes to Boston once. (Coincidentally, I think the road team won each time.)

Mid-majors like Butler and Gonzaga often have a hard time getting any majors to play them at home, so they have to go to neutral sites.

It is difficult to get BC to play BU, Harvard and Northeastern in basketball. They have little to gain, and potentially a lot to lose ... if they actually lose.

I recall Mike Jarvis going on TV and basically calling Jim O'Brien a chicken for refusing to play BU in basketball. You can understand why BU would have wanted to play BC back then - it would have generated a lot of interest locally, and BU might have taken a Big East scalp. But you can also understand why O'Brien didn't want to play, because other than a one-off for local interest, there wasn't anything that BC could gain by winning.

If they still had a Basketball Beanpot, it would be in the best interest of local college basketball and the decisions of balancing what the individual schools had to gain or to lose wouldn't matter.

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

THERE'S the basketball Beanpot reference!

And with that, let's get back on track.

BU sucks. Rebuttal?

The BU/MC thread turned into a ticket discussion.
The BC/BU thread is a basketball discussion.

None that I can think of.

However, it seems like it's your classic 2-for-1 scheduling that these kinds of series usually demand.

Of course BC is going to get the majority of the home games...but now factor in the travel time being negligible and the fact that BC hoops isn't quite Kansas/UNC caliber, as well as the Coach Jones angle, and I think there is little reason for me to believe this isn't true.

For what it's worth, my buddy is close friends with Pat Hazel... so this news is coming from a BU player. Although it's certainly a good source, it doesn't necessarily mean it's 100% certain, I suppose.

I HATE BASKETBALL.

Will someone please tell me that my school is not in Boston or that we are a Catholic school or that they "really didn't apply to BC, no, really, I didn't!"

Please?

PLEASE?!

Well, just having a corner of your campus in Brighton does not constitute your campus (though lovely) in the actual city of Boston. Seriously. It's not. Stop saying it is. Really. I've had the most stressful day and I really do need to have to get into this argument with you.

And I did not apply to BC. Never wanted to. Coulda. But chose not too. Why would I? Sheesh. As If. I mean, really. Me? At BC? It's bad enough I have to even drive through the campus. It literally broke my heart into several pieces when my oldest godchild decided to go there. You've infected him. I never hear back when I contact him. It's ilke you've take a piece of my family and I cannot forgive that. Ever.

How'd I do? :)

Oh, you guys would get a kick out of this. The Cornell band played "Shiping Up To Boston." I think at that moment we were well within our rights to chant "Not From Boston" to them and actually mean it.

Re: BU / BC Home and Home 12/2 - 12/3 Could we really be done with each other by Dec

Because BC doesn't care nearly as much about playing BU as BU does about playing us. BU would be much more up for that game than, say, a similarly talented St. Francis (NY) team. Which means there'd be a bigger chance of an upset.

I'm not sure this true from the players eyes. Certinally a good number of BU fans would get up for this game due to the rivalry on the ice, but I dont think the players would be any more up for a game against BC then they would against any other ACC team not named Duke or UNC. Teams like BU will get maybe 2 or 3 opportunitys a year to play a major conference team so any of those games will be a big game for them.

BC does not care about playing BU in hoops. It would be "special" for BU. Not for us.

Thus why I put "special" in quotes... obvioulsy it is not going to be a major rivalry, but I still believe if done correctly over time, it could be made to be more modeately "special" then (for example) your upcoming game against Sacred Heart.
