BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

Re: BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

Ha, I didn't know anyone else was old enough to remember that.

I'm old enough for that one too since I've been a fan of Lowell from the beginning of Hockey East and before that.

I'm old enough to remember it because I was part of the crew at Providence Civic Center that created the cheer at first Hockey East semis in 1985 when we were totally s c r e w e d out of an appearance in the first ever HE championship game. However, as noted below, something positive did come out of that weekend when the cheer was created.

3/15/85 - First Hockey East Semi Final, Providence Civic Center

Underdog Lowell proceeds to take 2 goal lead on BC and appears to be set to appear in first HE Championship game ever. However, a phantom penalty called after the goal takes it away, puts BC on PP, and Lowell eventually loses 6-5.

Note: Origin of Lowell "Hockey East is fixed" cheer and the next night, the Lowell/PC alliance is formed as Lowell fans lead PC student section in cheering against BC in famous Terrari multiple OT thriller that PC wins. So all wasn't bad but the BC loss hurt...

Those were the days....These days are OK too but the crowd is just starting to get into it again and I now have to watch my mouth, being a parental unit:(

Re: BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

JoeP on the first line and Vinny on the fourth?

mookie apparently isn't nearly as enamored with Vinny's play as Coach Parker was in his post-game press conference. He was out there for a ton of ice time because it was suddenly only he and Connolly who were used to PK shifts with Bonino and Popko out. I'd shuffle them to something more like:

zcohen-trivino-chiasson
megan-connolly-pereira
gilroy-santana-vin saponari
glass-popko/vic-courtnall

Vinny on the third might still seem low, but Santana has been extremely impressive, and Kevin Gilroy has seemed to be just a stride or deke away from making some nice plays. That could be an offensive line.

Re: BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

I'm hearing that they're planning on doing a pretty heavy push on campus this week as well.

This weekend is just huge for UML, and (at least to me) just another weekend for BU.

Re: BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

I don't think this will be just another weekend for BU since it will actually be their first weekend with back to back games. BU still has a lot of tweaking to do with their lines and I am sure Parker is pounding it into them that Lowell will not be a team to take lightly. BU had a nice confidence boost with the win over Michigan and I think they really want to keep that going to gain some momentum and feel more comfortable.

I don't think "just another weekend" for BU means that this series is insignificant for them, but relative to how HUGE this series is for UML (I would say the biggest early regular season series in at least a decade), it's rather run-of-the-mill.

Yeah, that's what I meant. :o

I think what might be a better way to put it is the psyche of UML would suffer way more at the hands of a BU sweep, than viceversa.

I still disagree. This BU team is still very young and inexperience as a whole and every game from now until a few weeks into the season is formative. We have a whole lot of kinks to iron out in our offense and our defense needs to get back to familiar form. A sweep by UML would do to us the same thing a sweep by us would do the UML: pose a significant hurdle in the morale of a team of players that is expected to do well and finish high.

That being said, I have to think that BU is the underdog coming into this weekend. UML has a core that has been playing together for years, with a few proven performers (Hutton/Hamilton, Edwards) that can control and change a game with a few plays. BU still has to find those players. We've seen flashes of it, but that needs to become a constant.

I also disagree. I think a sweep would hurt BU much more than Lowell. Lowell would fall to 3-3 (1-2)- not good, but still respectable. BU would fall to 1-4 (0-3)- very bad. I think both teams would have to be happy with a split here.

I would agree with that, if Lowell were to sweep this weekend from BU it would likely go down as one of their biggest weekends in recent memory and be a marketing tool for the rest of the year, if BU were to sweep...not so much.

Also true. So, in sum, Lowell has more to gain by sweeping, but BU has more to lose by being swept.

Re: BU at Lowell, Lowell at BU 10/30-31

So if BU loses this once or twice weekend, will we see a fire Jack Parker thread?

I mean, BU is under .500, and Parker hasn't led them to a National Championship in over six months. That's approaching Umile levels of futility. ;)

5 year rule. Can't biatch about the team or call for the coach's head for the next 5 years after a championship....;)

I expect Lowell to win the first game, act like they've avenged their rightful defeat in last year's HE championship as they tried to score an illegal goal (you can't score when the net's off it moorings, even if it comes back down on them), and then be so drained from their 1 year in arrears championship win that they in turn take the next game off and lose. UML 4-1, then BU 3-2.
