BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

Is this bye week a schedule quirk/random thing or is there more to it than that? Such a bad time to be off.

Since HE has an odd number of teams, everyone ends up with a bye week or two during the year.

Given we have two players who got hurt last weekend and have played 11 games in the last 30 days, I think this is actually a great time for the team to rest. Especially since they still have two regular season games to get back on schedule before starting the postseason.

Jay noted this after Saturday, but because of the Beanpot and the two Tuesday NU games in January, this past week was only the third full week of "normal" Sunday-Thursday rest and practice they've had since the start of 2024.

I'm sure you all saw the ASU/Alaska fight and brawl, yes? Did you also see that the game had the most penalty minutes since Feb 9, 2008 (Caniusis and RIT). Before that it was.... Anyone? Anyone?

BU-Maine. Jan 24, 2004 at Walter Brown Arena. 268 penalty minutes. *eye buldge* BU won the game 1-0.

A little bye week speculation to pass the time. So I know the chances of Macklin staying for his sophomore year are slim, but humor me. If it happens, I'm guessing that Celebrini/Eiserman/(warm body) will be the best line in BU history. Any thoughts? What line would hold that title at the moment? For me it's McEachern/Amonte/Tkachuk.

The 1991 line is as exciting as I can remember. On pure #’s probably 1976-77 the Rick Meagher line has to be considered. Now I’m not positive that Silk was on that line but you have Meagher 34-36-80, Eruzione 23-41-64 and Silk 35-30-65. Throw in Dick Lamby as a defenseman 9-36-45.

Oh.... that was one of the games i made while i was there. Largely because i had/have an internet friend from Maine. That was quite the game for the sin bin.

Fun thought, but Macklin's going to be playing with Connor Bedard next season. : )

Who do you think was better equipped to start their NHL career Eichel or MC? I say Eichel for overall game but Celebrini for pure offensive ability. The Blackhawks shouldn’t be rewarded for their inept organization I hope he doesn’t go there. Is there a lottery for the draft order I can’t remember

I'd heard from more than one person before the season started that it was not a foregone conclusion that Macklin was one and done, and that he wanted to potentially stay two. That information is old, so I have no clue how true it may still be.

What do we need to do to make that happen? NIL pool?

Macklin can't benefit from NIL the same as others since he's not a US citizen, unfortunately. He can get passive NIL income (someone sets up a shop and sells t-shirts with his name) but can't receive income for direct things like endorsements. It's a ridiculous law but it is what it is.

I don’t think he stays, but one thing that miiiiiiight keep him here is he’s best friends with Cole Eiserman and could play with him next season.

I did see an interview with MC at the beginning of the season in which he said he was excited to come to BU and that he & Cole Eiserman were going to be roommates. A lot may have changed since then, but that was on his mind at one point.

I think the opposite. I think Celebrini has the better all around game while Eichel was superior offensively. If someone who knew nothing about hockey went to watch both players their freshman seasons, I think Eichel would always stand out while Celebrini would not. Eichel was a force with the puck (and had it on his stick a ton), was an incredible skater, and had amazing vision. I think Celebrini plays more of a “pro” game, similar to Brady Tkachuk. If the play dictates that Celebrini receive a pass and immediately wrap it around the offensive zone, that’s what he does. Eichel would have taken the puck off the wall and tried to make something happen. My point in bringing up Tkachuk is that I never that he was worthy of being considered a top-5 pick in his draft year because he didn’t dominate in college. He very well may be the premiere power forward in the NHL. Eichel’s skill level was off the charts while Celebrini’s is very high which he augments with off the charts compete, a great motor, as well as always making the right play. I think there is a chance he returns for sophomore season depending on what team drafts him, either by his choice or their’s. For example, not sure he’d rush to get to San Jose whereas another team still rebuilding may not want to burn a year of his contract before it needs to and would be quite content to let Pandolfo and his staff continue to develop him as a player (which I don’t think would ever have been under consideration w/Albie).

I’m also slightly concerned about Eiserman slipping down to #8 in some draft boards mostly because he is viewed as being a “dog” meaning incredible goal scorer but doesn’t commit/effort a full 200 foot game.

So, no games this weekend. Anything we need to keep an eye on for the teams that are playing? Like, do we root for UMass to lose? Or anyone else?

I think the biggest thing a 17-year-old needs to improve before going to the NHL is size and strength. Macklin's father is a very highly regarded strength and conditioning coach. If Macklin was to listen to the advice of someone close to him ....

How about New Hampshire taking one game, tying the second vs. BC? Significant longshot, but needed if BU is to have a shot at the RS title.

So, obviously big UNH fan this weekend. We have 51 pts, and a max of 6 more, getting us to 57. BC has 52 and a max of 9 more. Need them to only get 5 over 3 games to share the regular season title. So UNH needs to probably win one, and take a point by at least getting to OT in the other (or take both to OT and get the extra point by win in both in OT or SO - probably not likely). That would assure the chance of a share. Other scenarios would have points lost at Merrimack. Normally I would say that is definitely possible, but I don’t think so this year.

As far as UMass, I was hoping they would be too far down after last weekend to have a chance at the NCAA, but they actually gained position to a 3 seed. I think we really need them in a solid 3 so both BU and BC get the eastern regionals. Being in the 13 or 14 puts them at a 4 in Springfield and BU to St. Louis. So, win on Minutemen!

There might still be a chance to get the overall 1 and not worry about staying East reagardless of UMass. I think that involves BC losing a game coming in and then beating them in the HE Championship game.
