BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

It's funny how some guys can skate like the wind but just can't score and other guys skate like a rusty backhoe, but have a knack for scoring. I love watching Nick Zabaneh skate, but it would be nice if he could pot a few. Reminds me of Ryan Cloonan in this way.

Shane LaChance, on the other hand... takes a while to get those RPMs above idle, but he knows where to go.

Plenty of stories, Jackie going nuts and chucking anything he could find on Alfond ice. Jack and Shawn sitting in the stands not allowed on the bench , can’t remember why though but the league did it. BU asst coach trying to climb over the glass behind bench in Alfond trying to fight with fans. BU runway covered with tarps so Maine fans couldn’t get to them on and off the ice. The night Maine lost to BU I remember Jack sweeping the runway, I thought it was weird but it was him calming his nerves I think anyway. Brother and sister of one of the BU players holding up a sign the next night after that loss, the sign had the zero crossed out and a one put in the loss column. The brother was waving that around all night, finally a Maine fan took it from him and tore it up. I know several people who had windows broken in parking lot near wba, flat tires etc. Standing at Alfond, on rail, south end. Puck came off goalies stick, hit structural post under sky boxes and then my wife in the head. She was ok but I told we couldn’t leave as it was BU.

No hockey will ever be as good as that if you ask me or any long time Maine fan. Hatred might not be a strong enough word

Remember the Jackie Parker pics on sticks in the stands at Alfond? Went to Boston one year for a game at WBA and stayed at the teams hotel. Remember going to the bar in there for a drink and there must have been 50 Maine fans including Grant Standbrook yelling in unison "BU Sux, BU Sux". Gotta good chuckle out of it.

Hockey East Championship game, Boston Garden, March 1991. After our glorious OT victory we walked outside and got verbally abused by a medium sized pack of Maine fans. I must have had the gift of the gab in those days, because I shouted back "At least we're not inbred!".

Don’t forget the time that as a student worker in the ticket office….I copied a couple hundred Parker faces and fans held them up as Jack walked across the ice….he either laughed or gave us the finger…..I prefer to remember it as the latter.

#71 is special. Fun night of hockey.

Maine week. I'd love to hear stories from the hey-day of this rivalry from my fellow old-timers. In the 90's the two best teams in Hockey East were Maine and BU. And Shawn Walsh was the perfect villain.

BU Hockey: Old Home Week

Robbie Wright tells a very funny story about Matt Wright needing to be escorted to the bus by Maine State Police after Matt rammed the goalie through the net and into the boards on a shoot out to try to injure him.

Why was Jay yelling at the ref after the game? I saw something on Twitter about head hits to Macklin not being called? Is there a particular incident that I missed?

Obviously my favorite BU-Maine memory is making the trip up to Orono in 92-93 and seeing our boys pin the loss on the Kariya team. I have a funny memory from that game: In between periods I was standing up in the concourse, stretching my legs. I must have been wearing a BU sweatshirt or something. This little old man, decked out in Maine gear from head to toe, looking like he was 75 if he was a day, comes waddling up to me as fast as his legs would carry him. I was preparing for some good-natured hockey banter. Instead, his face contorted into near-hatred as he said "what are YOU people doing here? Where did you get your tickets?" I responded that I'd bought them back in Boston. He then said "there are MAINE people who should be in those seats." He turned on his heels and walked away. Oh well, so much for it's only a game.

BU Hockey: Old Home Week

Back in the early '90's, BU was up in Orono for a two game set. Scott Cashman was the Friday starter, and either got yanked or put up a very crooked number. Pregame Saturday, he was obviously hearing some things from the crowd. Particularly as it was clear he was not going to be the starter. He did though, before leaving the ice, circle the defensive zone and toss pucks to about 20 kids in the first few rows. Fun gesture.

On the Maine rivalry- for one game when I was a student, my sports pass tickets placed me right behind the Maine bench at WBA. I gave Shawn Walsh and the bench an earful all game. Nothing personal or rude, just some commentary on their ”style” of play. That team would just bring out the animal in you. Fun times!

Max LaCroix might not be good enough to be the starting goalie for BU but what a quality young man
His speech tonight at the hockey hall of fame induction ceremony honoring his grandfather Pierre LaCroix was outstanding
Even delivered part of it in French. Certainly the type of person who will be a positive influence for the team

I was at the two game set that included the shootout win for BU with the Matt Wright collision with the goalie. I believe that was the game where Mike Grier had a breakaway goal in the third, perhpoas to tie it up. Part of the 94-95 season where I believe we were officially 0-2-2 against Maine until the NCAA title game.

No team struck fear into me like that 92-93 Maine team. When we had to kill off a PP in OT in that 7-6 stunner - to me it was a foregone conclusion that Kariya and company would score to swat away the pesky Terriers. Which is why it was such an incredible moment when Pendergast buried that pass from Pomichter. I was at T's Pub, not Alfond. Chaos.

Always time for another look at that one.

I remember a game at WBA where Dan Cavanaugh scored a goal with the goalie pulled to tie the game. I thought it was against Maine. Can anyone help with that memory. I just remember the place going absolutely bonkers when he scored.

I saw one year where a gentlemen actually had a toilet seat with Jack Parkers face in it.....priceless.

Correct it was a play off the faceoff from the left circle

Don't I remember that Shawn Walsh was the first coach in the East who started bringing in 21 year old freshmen?
