So many thoughts...
- Tough loss last night. I felt good with the lead, but the team fell back into their tough second periods that they had corrected over the last few weeks.
- Why couldn't we have the refs from the Beanpot championship who clearly realized they had not given NU a power play and called a BS interference call on Gavin with 6 minutes left, because you know, you can't go the whole game with one team never getting a Power Play? And while I agree Peterson was too aggressive on his penalty, the DU payer helped sell it (watch his glove come off and go sliding across the ice before he even hits the boards). Would it have made a difference if they made the tripping call on Lane? We'll never know, but sometimes even if you don't score on the PP, you gain momentum, as DU did after theirs.
- Once you get into OT, it's almost a 50/50 draw. We finally found our game back and we were the better team, like we were in the first. If Zabaneh's shot is on net, are we singing the praises of this team, versus feeling like there are issues?
- Quinn did not have a good game. We need more consistency from him next year.
- Denver is a very good team with one of the best (and still youngest) coaches. They will be a force for the next decade. That said, like Bomber, I see BC winning relatively easily. If we had pulled out the win, I would be worried about a repeat of 1994 against LSSU. BC is simply a dominant team with 5 guys that will be NHL stars within 3 years (well maybe 4 for Fowler, goalies need more time).
- BU was a top heavy team with some really good veteran leadership/role guys who will be missed dearly (Stevens, Tuch, Peterson). Macklin had 28 points more than the next forward on the team. I hope the situation with Wilmer works itself out, but if he enters the portal and if Macklin signs, we will be losing 6 forwards (assuming Greene and Kaplan are back). That's significant turnover.
- Another concern for next year: defense. Gavin and Aidan were inconsistent all year (did Aiden see a shift last night?). Even Willander, who looked incredibly smooth in the first few games of the year, had challenges, often seemingly underestimating the speed of our opponent. Gallagher did not improve at all this year. With Case and Webber gone, we absolutely need the freshmen to be better next season. Generally, I feel like Cole Hutson will step in well to replace Lane.
Overall, really pleased with another great season. To me, getting to the FF two years in a row is much harder now than it was in the 90s. As the "older" teams have executed on a strategy of recruiting older players (Lowell, Minnesota State, QU), it is that much harder to win consistently. Kudos to the coaching staff for getting these guys back to the Frozen Four. It was a fun ride.
