BU 23-24 Post-Season and Off-Season: Jacks and Coles

On the OT goal, Lachance made a nice play to find Kaplan. Might have been in his skates a bit but man you gotta do better corralling the puck there. He just completely lost the plot and kicks the puck on to a Denver stick to start the winning rush. Caron's also gotta have that one.

Agree strongly on both points. Too bad, Caron has been terrific.

Really, just one of the worst officiated FF games across the board that I can remember.

At this time of year once UNH is done (which as of the last 10+ years is every year... ugh) I just become a fan of good hockey.

This game was horribly one sided on the officiating front. There were some clear penalties on DU that were very similar to things BU was getting called for that somehow just weren't called. As a neutral observer it was really glaring. I can see missing a call here and there but wow. That isn't to say BU would have scored on a power play if they got one.

As to BU's season. BC is head and shoulders the best team in the country this year. If they don't win it all it is a major choke job and DU is playing a style that may frustrate BC - see the QU game. After BC I think BU is solidly in the next group with 2/3 other teams.

What went wrong? In my opinion BU went away from what was working in the 1st period. They were playing a really solid, heavy, puck management game, if you got it, attack and generate a chance if not get it deep and hammer the D-men. Over simplifying it, in the 2nd DU went to a 2 man forecheck for a bit and then switched back and forth with the 1-2-2 in the neutral zone the rest of the game. BU went to a bit more open style against the 2 man forecheck and then never back to the solid puck management of the first period. The game switched and BU just didn't keep switching with it. That is a credit to DU and Carle, that they figured out how to get BU out of what was killing Denver in the 1st.

You are all very lucky, solid coaching and fantastic recruiting as long as the guy behind the bench stay I think you are in for a good run.

Both goals were five hole, right? Can't have that.

Agree - made the saves you didn't expect, let in two that you'd expect. Unfortunate, he had a fantastic game otherwise.

Puck management definitely degraded as the game wore on. Thought it was absolutely ridiculous that they dropped the puck while Pandolfo was talking to a ref about a potential challenge. Still needed to bury chances early. They've seen this story before.

Great season overall, but this team definitely left you wanting more.

So many thoughts...
- Tough loss last night. I felt good with the lead, but the team fell back into their tough second periods that they had corrected over the last few weeks.
- Why couldn't we have the refs from the Beanpot championship who clearly realized they had not given NU a power play and called a BS interference call on Gavin with 6 minutes left, because you know, you can't go the whole game with one team never getting a Power Play? And while I agree Peterson was too aggressive on his penalty, the DU payer helped sell it (watch his glove come off and go sliding across the ice before he even hits the boards). Would it have made a difference if they made the tripping call on Lane? We'll never know, but sometimes even if you don't score on the PP, you gain momentum, as DU did after theirs.
- Once you get into OT, it's almost a 50/50 draw. We finally found our game back and we were the better team, like we were in the first. If Zabaneh's shot is on net, are we singing the praises of this team, versus feeling like there are issues?
- Quinn did not have a good game. We need more consistency from him next year.
- Denver is a very good team with one of the best (and still youngest) coaches. They will be a force for the next decade. That said, like Bomber, I see BC winning relatively easily. If we had pulled out the win, I would be worried about a repeat of 1994 against LSSU. BC is simply a dominant team with 5 guys that will be NHL stars within 3 years (well maybe 4 for Fowler, goalies need more time).
- BU was a top heavy team with some really good veteran leadership/role guys who will be missed dearly (Stevens, Tuch, Peterson). Macklin had 28 points more than the next forward on the team. I hope the situation with Wilmer works itself out, but if he enters the portal and if Macklin signs, we will be losing 6 forwards (assuming Greene and Kaplan are back). That's significant turnover.
- Another concern for next year: defense. Gavin and Aidan were inconsistent all year (did Aiden see a shift last night?). Even Willander, who looked incredibly smooth in the first few games of the year, had challenges, often seemingly underestimating the speed of our opponent. Gallagher did not improve at all this year. With Case and Webber gone, we absolutely need the freshmen to be better next season. Generally, I feel like Cole Hutson will step in well to replace Lane.

Overall, really pleased with another great season. To me, getting to the FF two years in a row is much harder now than it was in the 90s. As the "older" teams have executed on a strategy of recruiting older players (Lowell, Minnesota State, QU), it is that much harder to win consistently. Kudos to the coaching staff for getting these guys back to the Frozen Four. It was a fun ride.

Macklin wins the Hobey!!

What a treat to be able to watch this kid. I made it a point to go to more games this year, knowing we had something special. I was pleased to read his dad's comments in the Athletic today that would seem to indicate that he feels Macklin needs another year in college (and his dad would know a thing or two about development in sports :-)). Maybe Mike Grier and DQ will help us out is San Jose wins the lottery: sign Will Smith and tell Macklin to play a second year at BU :-)

BC fans will/are lamenting him winning it. To my earlier post, the next closest forward had 28 less points than Macklin. The amazing freshman line at BC are all at 60 points or more, with one game to go. I get that Gauthier wasn't on their line except when Perreault was hurt, but I believe they were on the same PP unit (that one that scored 4 against us in the HE championship). Gauthier would have been a fine winner, and I think he will be a top 6 forward for the Ducks starting next season. But I think the voters looked at how much MC carried this BU team whereas BC has 4 of the top 5 (I think) scorers in the country.

Per Mark Divver: BU adds two from the portal: Merrimack center and top scorer (7-25-32) Matt Copponi and Lowell 6'3" LD Brehdan Engum.
