BU 23-24 Post-Season and Off-Season: Jacks and Coles

If you have been on here for the past decade you know I'm a die hard NU fan even though I attended both schools. However I have seen 367 live NCAA games over now 40 years. That was perhaps the worst officiated game I gave seen in that entire time span. I saw at least 5 penalties not called, one of which was a major. I am hoping BC who I hate even more beats them senseless.

Worse than too many men in OT at Matthews ?

I could handle losing to a good Denver team fair and square, and I have no idea if BU would have cashed in on any potential power plays as they played a choppy game offensively. But with all that it was the worst reffed game I've seen on any level in ages. Local guy and NCAA Prez Charlie Baker needs to come out tomorrow and announce this crew is banned from any future NCAA tournaments. If the Big 10 wants to keep them so be it, but this was like assigning Angel Hernandez as home plate ump during the world series.

Also I wasn't at the game, but I really would have liked to have seen Jay go mental on this guys after at least the 3rd screw up to back up the team. Maybe he did but every time he was shown on camera after a blown call he looked befuddled. I don't picture Parker taking that as calmly if he was behind the bench.

Not letting him challenge the hit to the head was bogus. Not calling that leg check was bogus. Both things definitely could have changed the outcome. It sucks when the officials play too big of a deciding role in the game.

BC will beat Denver 6-1. It’s their year.

BU never looked like a national champion this year and thus the result. There were plenty of years. ‘77, ‘91, ‘97, ‘15 where I felt they blew an excellent chance at a NC this isn’t one of them. BC looks like a champ head annd shoulders over every team. Unfortunately they weren’t able to capitalize in a year with 2 elite talents playing together.

I agree with this completely. Lane/Celebrini were elite. But the rest of the roster was average at best. Terrible puck management

Not to go in for the kill but they also were one of the more undisciplined BU teams I’ve seen. A lot of silly offensive zone and lazy (stick) penalties and loose turnovers. They have a couple of big classes coming in hopefully will improve the depth. They didn’t have a #1 line which is crazy considering they ended up #2 in PWR

I think you are being a little harsh, losing 2-1 in OT in a semi final game, solid second ranked team all year long, winning 28 games is an excellent team, not the best team but an excellent team. The talent level falls off a lot after Hutson and Celebrini and a few others but that is true of most teams. Not sure how many minutes they play a game but I am sure they don't have much in the tank by the third period. Hutson got stuck on the ice on the first goal and you could see he was out of gas. They will be a top team in the coming years and so will BC, the high level competition between the Comm Ave schools will continue for the foreseeable future and it will provide lots of excitement for everyone. The high end talent wants to play at one or the other and the fans will see some terrific hockey on both ends of the Avenue.

I posted this on the Socials in reply to a friend (and comments about the officiating.)

Don't blame the refs. They scored zero 5x5 goals. Zero. I love this team, but they got beat by a better team. BC is going to roll on Saturday. They are an absolute wagon with a stud goalie.

If somehow, someway they can convince Macklin to play with his pal Eiserman, than next year could be the year. (It would also be nice if Lane stayed another year. But his blind pass behind his own net last night was brutal. He needs to learn to cut that shit out.)

1991 - Brutal. 1994 - Brutal. 1997 (after beating a 4 loss Michigan team) - Brutal. 2015 - Mind-numbingly brutal. This team wasn't a missed NC opportunity. This was a team that reached their ceiling.

That's my take. Was I encouraged by their first period? Yep! But then I went, hold on... I've seen this movie before. It was a great first period, but they only scored one goal. One. And then we knew what was going to happen. This team could never quite keep their foot on the gas for three periods. And they didn't quite have that "it" factor to bring them to the next level. Oh, and they were also skating 4.5 defensemen and 11 forwards. So much for depth.

Let's hope that 6>5 lights a little extra fire and that the incoming recruits are half as good as The Best Recruiting Class Ever that matriculated up the street.

BU Hockey: Back to Work

So, I’m not saying officiating was fully to blame for the loss. It was crap, completely, but this loss was because BU couldn’t finish on a bunch of opportunities. How. Ever. Give me a moment to adjust my tinfoil hat. I saw a post on Twitter that the lead referee last night night works for a company called Playfly Sports, whose longtime partner is the Denver Pioneers. And the company posted on its Facebook page wishing their longtime partner the Denver Pioneers luck in the game last night. At the very least, it’s a conflict of interest, isn’t it? How does this guy get one of the biggest games of the year? Nothing will come of it of course, but interesting to read.

Anyway, I remember during the regionals saying that BU should take a lot of time leading up to this weekend working on their penalty kill. Looks like they did that. I am very impressed that Denver didn’t capitalize on any of their power plays. I thought BU was done for after Peterson’s penalty at the end of regulation. Everything else, though, it was disappointing because they had the chance to make a statement in the first period and didn’t. I’ve seen various comments about Caron not being a big time goalie but he was great last night. The Denver goalie, while he made every stop he had to when BU was peppering him with shots, didn’t really have to make any out of this world saves. I felt like BU could not put together any sustaining pressure in the offensive zone. Plus Denver blocked more shots and passes last night than Cade Webber had all year, it seems.

Their research on BU was spot on because Macklin was not really a factor. Was that the first ga,e in how long that he didn’t have a point?

Onto next year, I suppose. A little birdie told me to expect Shane Lachance as next year’s captain. Thoughts?

100% agree. You have to put good teams away. Denver has won three games in a row the same way and when we only got one, I knew we were in trouble.

That wasn’t what I was asking for thoughts on. :) Shane Lachance as captain next year. As a sophomore. Discuss.

Looked like potential contact to the head major on that hit on Celebrini that they didn’t let Pandolfo challenge?

That play didn't look like anything really. The Peterson hit was an obvious major and Celebrini cross checked a guy into an injury. BUT obviously Denver not getting a single penalty was absurd. I thought they probably should have called a hook on Denver in OT when Hutson was dangling near the net. There were others too. Really, just one of the worst officiated FF games across the board that I can remember.

Edit: I thought you meant the major they reviewed at the END of the game. I did not see the one earlier in the game on Celebrini.

On the OT goal, Lachance made a nice play to find Kaplan. Might have been in his skates a bit but man you gotta do better corralling the puck there. He just completely lost the plot and kicks the puck on to a Denver stick to start the winning rush. Caron's also gotta have that one.
