BU 23-24 Post-Season and Off-Season: Jacks and Coles

For all the recent years where the flukey nature of the game in a one and done tourney format led to some wonky upsets, this year was pretty chalky with only Michigan being the unexpected card. And frankly not all that unexpected.

And really, Michigan is the driving force of the four programs that are in. So if it was Michigan-BU and BC-Denver I bet Michigan-BU would be late game.

Right … as far as non hockey fans go Michigan would bring the most name recognition, then BC then BU/Denver probably tied for 3rd. (Although many non hockey fans outside of the area likely don’t even know the difference between BU and BC (insert roll eyes emoji here)

Right - this frozen four group is about as “traditional blue blood” as it gets.

Question for you all - has there always been a regional trophy? I noticed at the end of the games when they were taking pictures of the oversized ticket they would quickly push a championship trophy in the picture. I thought it was the NCAA championship. Now I heard it was a regional championship trophy. I just remember it's only been a few years they actually gave the players hats. Now there's a trophy?

I don’t ever remember seeing a trophy. I like how BU avoided it like the plague just like the conference championship trophies in the NHL. Nice to see them get it done in a “championship” final. Just need to do it one more time.

Anyone know where the BU sections are? I’m in section 118 - hope it’s near the BU corner this year.

Jay Pandolfo is a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award for the second year in a row, along with Adam Nightingale from Michigan State and the RIT coach.

After never hearing the "chalk" phrase in my life I feel like I have heard it 10 times on the past two weeks. I think I get what it means but I don't understand why. Anyone care to enlighten an old guy?

It comes from betting terms. To 'bet chalk' means you've gone with the favorite. it's since passed into the vernacular as "the top seeds are winning, we're not getting the upsets"

mookie’s tickets are available. Best seats in the house, row 1 on the rail in section 221. Can have for cost (454) or less if you’re a student and have a budget. Not going to sent mookie to the poor house. Let mookie know

Found online:

It is unknown when exactly the term chalk was first coined, although it is commonly thought that it comes from horse racing. The most popular story goes that horse track oddsmakers used to keep track of the betting on a chalkboard. The favorite horse was listed first with the other horses listed beneath. The story goes that the oddsmaker would constantly have to erase the favorite horse to lower their odds so they wouldn’t lose money. Eventually, the favorite horse’s name would be a smudge of chalk.

I heard it was sections 113-114. And 216 as well.

ETA: Got my seats. They’re in 114.

Thanks for the "chalk" explanations.

I'm a little disappointed that nobody commented on my title for this thread. Supposed to sound sort of like "Jack and Coke" (though i am more of a Bacardi and Coke guy myself), and of course we have a lot of Jacks and will have 2 Cole's next year...anywho...:-)

Good job on the thread name :) :)

What is everyone thinking about Denver? 30 win team, NCHC Tournament Champions (won at Xcel Energy Center), 2nd place regular season behind North Dakota, high scoring, solid goaltender - this is a tough team to beat. Both UMass and Cornell held them to 2. I’m not surprised Cornell did that, but a bit surprised that UMass held them to 2 (maybe playing in the East factor?). Looks like fairly balanced scoring. Jack Devine, a Jr, leads with 27 goals. Looks like another team that looks like us. Hopefully Jay comes up with a good game plan to try to keep them in check. Need a better start than last year energy wise and better crispness. No penalties like the Minnesota game would be great, but I’m not expecting that again - it’s obviously a rarity. Keep it to 2 or 3 when they have scoring chances. Nothing away from the play. A good portion of the team playing in this round last year will be a plus. This is the advantage of going consecutive years. Need to lean on that big time. Other than that, it’s a fairly even game as I see it.

They have to manage the puck better and play heavier on the puck than these previous weekends. It's one thing for the forwards on lower lines to not contribute offensively, but lately theyve been turning pucks over and taking penalties.
