First, congratulations to the team! Winning the regular season in HE outright is an accomplishment.
Now, the Commesso thing. Very talented goalie. WJC experience, Olympic team experience and wins. High draft choice. However, his record in tournament games (and 1 Red Hot Hockey at MSG) is…..1-7. The win is this year’s first game against Air Force at the Desert Hockey Classic. No Beanpot, HE tournament, or NCAA wins. Some of those games he played well, but still no wins of any consequence. All of the goals his own fault, surely not. Some bad team defense - yes. He will need to steal at least portions of games in the tournaments. All champions have that in common on their runs. Let’s hope this trend reverses starting with a quarterfinal win next weekend.
UMass Lowell played the same number of games but they had 20 fewer goals scored against them.
Can’t think of a game they deserved to win in those. It’s a team sport and don’t forget an Albie coached team.
yes kudos let’s hope he keeps that confidence and focus he looked like a different goalie than last night. But that PP needs some urgency, energy and movement. Wasting Hutson’s skillCommesso played a hell of a game tonight. Not a bad way to end the season. And interesting fact - no ties!
Unless UNH beats Providence.
I’d like to know if game times have been assigned. I know we don’t know who is playing whom but I’d like to think Hockey East has made plans for when the four games will be played.
According to the Hockey East website all "first round" games are at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Quarterfinals just says Saturday, March 11 "TBA." I'm guessing TV might have a say...one might think they would be staggered given that it's not as if anyone is playing the next day. The semis and finals are the following weekend so I don't see why they even have to play them all on the same day.
Another aspect of this I didn't account for. Wouldn't providing Merrimack, NU and UConn the chance to sweep a series against potentially three top 25 teams in the PWR help them? I know there's a chance they lose a game in the series but those teams could desperately need some wins in the QF round for PWR purposes. As it stands now it certainly looks like even Merrimack is toast with just a single loss. So I don't see how the format helps these bubble teams this year anyway. It's not like these teams are in a position where if they get swept it would be the 2nd loss that knocked them out of NCAAs. They need wins.
Agreed. The league isn't exactly helping their own teams. As it stands now, there's only one Hockey East team that even makes the tournament. Of course, if BU doesn't win it then there will be at least two, because the winner gets the automatic bid.
Who would be Lane Hutson's competition for HE Player of the Year? He should be a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year.
