BU: '22-'23 Season: Sail The Boats

First, congratulations to the team! Winning the regular season in HE outright is an accomplishment.

Now, the Commesso thing. Very talented goalie. WJC experience, Olympic team experience and wins. High draft choice. However, his record in tournament games (and 1 Red Hot Hockey at MSG) is…..1-7. The win is this year’s first game against Air Force at the Desert Hockey Classic. No Beanpot, HE tournament, or NCAA wins. Some of those games he played well, but still no wins of any consequence. All of the goals his own fault, surely not. Some bad team defense - yes. He will need to steal at least portions of games in the tournaments. All champions have that in common on their runs. Let’s hope this trend reverses starting with a quarterfinal win next weekend.

UMass Lowell played the same number of games but they had 20 fewer goals scored against them.

Umass Lowell also play a defensive system. Michigan had given up
111 goals this season and plays a very similar style to BU. It’s run and gun.

Can’t think of a game they deserved to win in those. It’s a team sport and don’t forget an Albie coached team.

I don’t necessarily disagree. The point is this team doesn’t have really any good experiences in tournament type games with Commesso backstopping the team. We do have a Beanpot with Duplessis in net. It is quite odd. We’ll need a better team effort going forward and we’ll also have to be saying “wow, Drew stole that one to advance “ at least once to win anything. Just my opinion from following and watching BU hockey and college hockey in general for 30+ years.

I think this is the type of team we’ve been waiting years for. A large group of experienced upperclassmen, some older for their class years, and a very talented group of high end freshman who are contributing.

Commesso played a hell of a game tonight. Not a bad way to end the season. And interesting fact - no ties!
yes kudos let’s hope he keeps that confidence and focus he looked like a different goalie than last night. But that PP needs some urgency, energy and movement. Wasting Hutson’s skill

So...if BC beats UMass in the "play-in round," guess who we play? Unreal...(if #6 and #7 also win)

Unless UNH beats Providence.

I’d like to know if game times have been assigned. I know we don’t know who is playing whom but I’d like to think Hockey East has made plans for when the four games will be played.

According to the Hockey East website all "first round" games are at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Quarterfinals just says Saturday, March 11 "TBA." I'm guessing TV might have a say...one might think they would be staggered given that it's not as if anyone is playing the next day. The semis and finals are the following weekend so I don't see why they even have to play them all on the same day.

Saturday, March 12
#5 Boston University at #4 UConn - 4:30pm
TBD at #3 UMass Lowell - 4:30pm (NESN+)
TBD at #2 Massachusetts - 7pm
TBD at #1 Northeastern - 7:30pm (NESN+)

From last year but they did stagger them a bit. I think a true four game stagger would be cool but maybe depends on arenas involved too. Maybe this is the time to mention that I believe Hockey East is the only conference that has a single game format for the QF round. I'm conflicted on that. Provides for one great day of hockey but not the best format if you're trying to get your best teams to the Garden. Of course I say that and all home teams won last year. Attendance typically blows for this round so I do understand the nature of making it easier on fans and saying here it is, just one game, one chance to go.

Also, you're right about not needing to have them on the same day. There might be some people who would go to one game on Saturday and another venue on Sunday. If you followed an NFL scheduling model you could play something like 4:30 and 7 on Saturday and then come back with 1 and 4:30 on Sunday.

Another aspect of this I didn't account for. Wouldn't providing Merrimack, NU and UConn the chance to sweep a series against potentially three top 25 teams in the PWR help them? I know there's a chance they lose a game in the series but those teams could desperately need some wins in the QF round for PWR purposes. As it stands now it certainly looks like even Merrimack is toast with just a single loss. So I don't see how the format helps these bubble teams this year anyway. It's not like these teams are in a position where if they get swept it would be the 2nd loss that knocked them out of NCAAs. They need wins.

Agreed. The league isn't exactly helping their own teams. As it stands now, there's only one Hockey East team that even makes the tournament. Of course, if BU doesn't win it then there will be at least two, because the winner gets the automatic bid.

What’s better for pairwise? A single win? Or two wins and loss to the same team?

I can’t recall hockey east ever only getting one team in. Although BU winning the tournament is something of a dubious proposition at this point.

Who would be Lane Hutson's competition for HE Player of the Year? He should be a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year.

I would say Matt Brown is the chief competition. Considerations to Jefferies from Merrimack and McDonough from NU (20 goals). Levi has some really good conference only numbers. I would go with Hutson since he’s the scoring leader as a defenseman and has that wow factor when you see him play.

Definitely Levi. His .947 save percentage in conference games blows every other goalie away. I suspect Levi wins POTY and Hutson will be ROTY.
