BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Awful game, but who is actually surprised? Way too many mistakes and odd man rushes on defense, and precious few scoring chances on offense. Team came out flat and actually got worse as the game went on. Question: if Albie can't gameplan, motivate, or make in game adjustments, WHAT THE F IS HE DOING HERE?!? If nobody thinks he's the answer, do we really need an entire year of this?

Agreed - Covid was his stay of execution. Now, we have to waste another season. Sigh.

Another variable not yet mentioned is the ice surface last night - it was HORRIBLE. Looked like both teams were playing on a slushie. It was 70 degrees all day and the ice making facilities there are mostly the same as when the place was built in the '70s, so it was a disaster. Most of the post-whistle scrums were not the result of cheap shots but players who just couldn't stop. The refs fell down at least 4 times, the puck bounced in some spots and died in others. Both teams had major issues with this and was a key factor in why neither could ever really set up an offense.

God, I wish bad ice would be the cause of our bad offense.

I actually thought Matt Brown was the only player that played well (and not because he scored). I think he is the only player that didn't cause a turnover in our own zone. Fensore looked good in some ways - his skating is standing out more now that he is the only smooth skating d-man (with Farrance gone). But he made a play in the first period (I think) that was made me say "oh don't start that again". He tried to beat three guys at the blue line, lost the puck and UConn got an odd man break the other way. We used to see that from him too often in years past. And to make matters worse, I think every other d-man felt they needed to do the same thing.

It was a disappointing result after pulling out a great road win on Friday, but I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. With new coaches and players, I'll be an optimist and think they can still have a good season. UConn is a strong team, this wasn't Maine or Merrimack.

The band sounded good, so there's that. :-)

Keeping the seat warm for the inevitable transition to Pandolfo? ;)

That performance on Saturday was particularly disturbing. This isnt a typical BU team that averages 19 years old throughout the lineup Its a veteran team with alot of good players that should have something to prove going into the season. Not to mention the coach has already said this team has as much talent as anyone in H.E. (Anyone know his contract status?)

I think this team will play a bit better than this past weekend, but two things:

1. don't sleep on UConn - they have grit, energy, and talent.
2. I think our roster is a bit overrated - many somewhat experienced and steady players, but our top-6 forwards and top-4 D aren't elite on the ice.

Time will tell if they show elite effort levels on a consistent basis, but given the track record of the last handful of years I will be pleasantly surprised if it all comes together.

Somehow BU is ranked 12th

It's the bias of where they started. I know polls are meaningless in terms of playoff implications, but I still think it would make sense to wait 4 weeks before the first polls come out. But we are a nation that lives on ranking things, so that won't ever happen...

One highlight from Saturday night was when the DJ played "The Pretender" - Foo Fighters in the 3rd period. : ) : 0

I think people underestimate the talent at UCONN. That is a pretty good team they have down there. Granted BU played like crap but I think a lot of teams will split vs UCONN. They are upper mid pack and the parity in Hockey East is at an all-time high. BU really needs a player or two to step up and be the man that can carry the team. Maybe it's Tuch or Brown but they need a player that will consistently deliver. The depth is there but is there a stud that will take over a game for us?

BU really needs more structure. They play a run and gun style it seems and rarely have puck possession in the Ozone. Seems like all there goals are on a rush dating back to last year while the opponent has Ozone time and plays keep away and cycles the puck which leads to more scoring chances and shots. BU must have given up a dozen odd man rushes this weekend alone. They need to play more conservatively on defense IMO.

Maybe its just me, but I was hoping for more than 3 goals on the weekend when you consider their forward group consists of UML's leading scorer, 2 first round picks, 2 seconds and 3 thirds. (All but one of which are returning players)

One would think more than 3 goals in two games would be a given. But alas, organized offense and extreme effort are not this team's calling card. That has to change, or (most of) the coaching staff will be gone.

I am not wrapped up in this roster's credentials because if you stripped their draft status away and just did the eye test on them, they really look like an average HE group of forwards.
