BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

OK, so it wasn’t pretty. In fact, it was downright dismal for great portions of the game. But they pulled it out and they start their 100th season 1-0-0. Looking forward to seeing them at Agganis tomorrow!

I don't know how they pulled it off. Need to get more offense tomorrow. Yes we had 40 shots, but I didn't see too many grade A scoring chances till midway through the third. Uconn goalie was catching everything. Shoot low, generate rebounds. Not a lot going on around the crease tonight.

On the bright side, won 34 of 66 today (51.5%). Uconn was one of the better FO teams last year. I thought Webber looked well. Too many stretch passes by the team though that end up as icing. Don't think BU had an odd man rush tonight

I am assuming they are requiring proof of vaccination or negative test. A mask mandate is not needed but whatever...

They were not requiring any proof. Most wore masks, some didn't have any on at all, and some might have been pushing the "I'm eating or drinking" aspect. Given how few people were there, it was easy to sit socially distanced. I wear glasses so when I was in may seat I usually had my mask on only over my mouth - the fogging gives me a headache after awhile.

There were also some bad turnovers on passes up the middle - at least three times.

I agree many of the shots were not testing. That said, to get that many after how bad last year was, in my opinion, is a positive. We blew some fo the grade A's by shooting a foot over the net. The book on the goalie must have been to aim high, cuz it seemed that Tuch and Peterson especially, were shooting everything over the net.

The other big things is that I saw much better "flow" than last year, through the neutral zone. I think Brown is a reason why, along with some new coaching ideas.

O'Connell's full post-game comments haven't been posted yet, but he clearly wasn't happy with the 3 PP opportunities in the opening period:
“We’re a little slow on the breakout and then in the zone, and once we did get [the power play] set up, we didn’t get enough shots. We had multiple opportunities to shoot the puck and we didn’t. If you don’t establish your shot, you’re not gonna have a good power play.”

For some reason, UConn doesn't provide a video highlights reel, although there are many clips on the BU Men's Hockey twitter feed. And not only did Commesso's thievery on O'Neil make ESPN's Top 10, it was #1. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja0EZA3r3oU

FWIW, Hanson was the goalie for Union in BU's season-opener two years ago and gave up 7 goals, including Matt Quercia's only 2-goal game.

BU Hockey: Work In Progress

Another variable not yet mentioned is the ice surface last night - it was HORRIBLE. Looked like both teams were playing on a slushie. It was 70 degrees all day and the ice making facilities there are mostly the same as when the place was built in the '70s, so it was a disaster. Most of the post-whistle scrums were not the result of cheap shots but players who just couldn't stop. The refs fell down at least 4 times, the puck bounced in some spots and died in others. Both teams had major issues with this and was a key factor in why neither could ever really set up an offense.

Under 3250 in my opinion. Going to shortly be one less if they keep playing as poorly as they are in this period.

That was terrible. It was cool to be back in Agganis, but it felt like a game from 19-20. 3 goals in 2 games isnt good. With all this "pace" BU supposedly plays with, couldn't find that anywhere. All the skilled/drafted players don't seem to play to their potential. We left commesso out to dry numerous times. There were zero bright spots tonight. I can't picture this team scoring many goals this season.

Agree it was awful. But I thought Fensore was the best player on the ice both nights. Everyone else looked like they were counting down the days until they could turn pro.

Also, pretty sure I was served a hot dog left over from that March, 2020 BC game. Worst food ever. Never spending another penny on food at Agganis.

Well … It was a good night for the fire Albie crowd.

woof

It was great to be back in the building watching hockey.

Fensore was indeed the best Terrier on the ice. The 11th star of the game.
