BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

So, anyone who attended yesterday's end-of-season event...news, rumors? I appreciate that the likely responses will be "not much".

So, apparently there was a much scaled-down "banquet" yesterday limited only to players, their parents, team/department staff, and graduating seniors in the Pep Band. I had heard back in early March that the plan was to have a full-scale afternoon brunch banquet on yesterday's date. I imagine BU's decision to move on from Albie also contributed to its decision to scale down the banquet given the absence of a head coach.

Other things I heard about the event yesterday are 1) It was short in duration (~45 minutes); 2) Several players did not attend; 3) Only a few parents attended

Pretty much epitomizes the state of the hockey program.

I've been unable to find any reference to it on the BU Hockey website.

I did see a picture posted by the student section leaders of the team posing with the Beanpot. The banquet looks like it was held in the Burke club room. It did look like many of the players were there - including Mastrosimone. I think I spotted Ty Amonte too.

Hmmm how do you have a leadership group in place with no coach? I know players probably provide the input but still. Who is ultimately running things? Of course I am asking when I am convinced Pandolfo is your guy.

I believe that the norm at BU has been the players vote on the following season's leadership group (with graduating players and those who already departed not abstaining), with the coaching staff "ratifying" the players' input.

Since Pandolfo is still technically the Associate Head Coach on BU's staff in the absence of a head coach, I imagine he might have had a say by default.

It is normal for the head coach to have final approval over any player leadership positions.

As for contract statuses, most contracts run through a university's fiscal year. Normally that is to June 30th.
That should have no impact on replacing Albie. All it would signify is the date that they need to pay Albie his salary.

It is interesting how unsubstantiated rumors hit the Internet. "Pandolfo doesn't want the head coaching job."
Said who?
If not from him, it is completely meaningless. And maybe meant to hurt his chances.

The only person that should know if it is true is Drew Marrochello. And if it was, he should immediately move on. But I seriously doubt there is any truth to it.

If Pandolfo does not want to be a head coach, why did he apparently apply for the job last time it was open? Then after being disqualified and learning a degree was a requirement for the job subsequently made sure he completed his required credits? Seems pretty safe to say that is all unsubstantiated rumors.

Athletic coach's contracts do not necessarily run along the fiscal year. IIRC when Quinn was hired, he couldn't begin until May 1. I may be wrong on that.

There were plenty of people who mocked the idea of Hastings to BC/BU. "Why would he leave" blah blah blah. It might not end up happening but if BC/BU call you at least pick up the phone and listen to what they have to say.

My understanding is BCHockeyBlogger has direct family ties to the BC hockey program and secondary family ties to BU and the pros.

Another consideration is that DQ and Hastings have been close friends for many years going back to their days on the Nebraska-Omaha staff when the program started in the 90s. Hastings was on DQ's staff for the US WJC team and took over for DQ after DQ took the NYR job. Hastings is once again on DQ's staff on this year's US World Championships team. It seems very possible DQ's influence is now impacting BU's head coach search.

Hastings has had tremendous success at Minnesota State, especially with the relatively limited resources he has (compared to BU or Minnesota or Duluth). Given the head coach situations at places like Minnesota, Duluth, N. Dakota, Denver seem very stable, the BU (and BC) openings presents a major opportunity for both Hastings and the respective schools.

Hastings has had tremendous success at Minnesota State, ...

How important is it in today's college game to have strong regional ties to get early insights on recruits?

And would BU be happy if Hastings brought his roster model* to BU?

*In the eyes of many UMn fans, MSU-M has replaced UND as the home of the "25 year old Canadians".

Priorities: win, win, and win. Players come from all over the US, Canada, and the rest of the world, so go fishing where the fish are. Age doesn't matter - especially if you're winning, filling the arena, and driving eyeballs and donations. :)

And plenty mocked the thought of Lang moving to the east end of the state. But it's been reported he was a candidate out in South Dakota.
