BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

College hockey is broken and with the transfer portal and all these post grads and extra years of eligibility the teams that are older and full of 25 year olds are going to have the advantage. Even a young team like Michigan was with 7 1st round picks weren't enough to beat a veteran laden team. If Hastings is available and wants to come to BU then I can't see how they pass on him and his resume at the NCAA level. I had Pandolfo as the shoe in but this certainly clouds that call.

How important is it in today's college game to have strong regional ties to get early insights on recruits?

And would BU be happy if Hastings brought his roster model* to BU?

*In the eyes of many UMn fans, MSU-M has replaced UND as the home of the "25 year old Canadians".

Would Hastings have liked to have Owen Power, Matt Knies, Jake Sanderson, etc.? Yes. Did any of them want to come to Mankato? No. He's a coach who adapts well, and he knows there's more than one way to build a roster.

Denver had the 3rd youngest roster in college hockey. I hate the argument you can't win with a young team, it has always been a BS excuse. It's not just people here either, people use it with BC all the time now and they always won with one of the youngest rosters in college hockey. There are multiple ways to win

Michigan had plenty of experienced upperclassmen to go with their young talent too. It was a well constructed roster for this year anyway and they had a great year. They were in OT at the FF. Mel Pearson would have taken that going into the season. Now I am curious to see how they look next year and if they find a way to remain in the hunt though. I have given up on the age complaints. Nothing is stopping BC/BU from bringing in top older players as well. Miles Wood and Mike Hardman were good examples of that for BC. Came in as older freshmen and had a huge impact. Up to the coach to find that right mix. Can't blame Hastings for not attracting first round talent to Mankato. Maybe he would if they were in the NCHC.

There is a difference in bringing in true freshman at 18 and a freshman in at 20. BU/BC bring in NTDP players who are usually true freshman at 18. Other schools bring in freshman at 20. Age does matter. Michigan relied on young players despite having upper classmen. Beniers, Power, Borderleau, Brisson, Hughes, Johnson, etc were all true freshman when they came in and despite being all sophomores where younger than most freshman players. It does need to be a mix but that's been proven hard to do for BU/BC recently for some reason.

"I’m hearing per sources that MN State head coach Mike Hastings is very much in the mix at Boston University. Hastings was endorsed by former BU coach David Quinn..."/QUOTE]

I wouldn't dismiss this completely out-of-hand. In addition to the DQ connection, Hastings and Northeastern coach Jerry Keefe have coached together in the USA Hockey national program and his son is an NU student (though not a player). So, it's not like he doesn't have ties to the Boston area.

And just when we thought we knew... I actually am now feeling as if I'll be disappointed if it is anyone other than Pandolfo. As it gets closer perhaps the nostalgia aspect of hoping they stay in the family is more important than I would have initially thought to me.

There's really no evidence Jay would be a great hire, though.

From what I can see, there hasn't been any coverage by the DFP regarding the coaching search or the players/family event over the weekend. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Hah, no. The next time the DFP writers report something that isn't in a press release will be the first time. They have no one to ask softball questions to in a press conference so that means they have no info to write on.

Hastings = Homerun
Pandolfo = Walk
Unknown with head coaching experience = Single
Unknown with recent success as a head coach = Double

BU Hockey: Wow Me

Hastings now being mentioned for Mich State job. Mich State has the money to make that happen and it would probably be more of a fit for him than BC/BU. We'll see.

Does anyone know if BU (or BC) was represented at the coaches meeting this week in Florida
One of the items on agenda was to allow in season tournaments to play a regulation 20 minute full strength overtime
Certainly would need advocates to make this happen in beanpot
Also all overtime rules on agenda

York & Kraft were supposedly there representing BC. Haven't heard anything about BU
