BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

True...you just can't get that far behind in games like this though. But a valiant effort!
Well, some team from Providence did comeback from a 3-goal deficit against Minnesota State in 2019. However, over the past 5 seasons teams that have taken a 3-goal lead in the postseason are 166-5 overall and 27-1 in the NCAAs.

Furthermore, Minnesota State isn't the team you want to fall behind in a game. They've won 120 of 130 games when they've taken the lead over the past 4 seasons, 98 of which they never lost the lead.

According to that UNH spreadsheet, Ty Amonte and Boguslavsky entered the transfer portal.

I'd heard Ty is done - he's already been here 5 years and I don't believe he had a prior redshirt year? Therefore he'd have exhausted his 5th Covid year here.

Not heard a peep about either of them entering the portal, they're also not listed on CHN's tracker: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/playerMoves/

Is there a date by which players must declare for the portal? Or is it open-ended?

I see Ty Amonte, Boguslavsky and Doyle (who departed in December).

Wasn't Amonte granted a redshirt for either his sophomore or junior season? Considering the extra season for COVID, doesn't that give him a 6th season? Or does the extra COVID season eliminate the redshirt season?

Thanks for putting that together. Should be interesting to see the results. Would also be interesting to somehow share it more widely than just this forum. Thanks again for all you do for BU hockey!!
Thank you. I'd also like to share it more widely, but I don't have much of a social media presence. So please share the link if you do:

And take it if you haven't already done so. I'm already gotten 55 responses, so thank you to every one who has already taken it. I've also read all the suggestions and an extra thank you to those who took the time to give detailed suggestions and comments. They show how much you care about the program.

What does it say when a player (Doyle) transfers across town/literally blocks away (to NU) to play in an old barn (as opposed to beautiful Agganis)? Hmmmm.

Well it wouldn't be the first time. Recent guys were Sam Kurker and Brendan Collier. I think every situation is different when it comes to transfers. Kurker was a high round pick who wasn't developing as many had hoped. We see guys in that situation leave all the time, thinking perhaps a change of scenery will change their future (Kiefer Bellows, Jake Wise). With Doyle, despite being an older recruit, didn't look ready for regular D-1 minutes, so he may have been told he wasn't going to see regular time at BU. I think Collier's situation was likely similar - he had dropped into 4th line/healthy scratch minutes.

One player who I do question the coaches handling of is Max Willman. Transfers from Brown, doesn't get much ice time, now he is in the NHL.

I hear you. My thinking is he clearly wanted to go to school right on Boston and he had committed to BU when he was like 15 or so years old. So, it must have been his dream school. Kid has shown to be a really good offensive minded d'man - something we certainly needed this year and going forward. I don't have any intel on the situation but kinda thinking the staff could have done more to keep him on board but who knows how unhappy he was.

Disagree with this assessment of him. In his opportunities on the ice this fall, he was a liability. Frequently out of position in his own zone and not contributing offensively. He did not earn more minutes when there was plenty of opportunity to do so.

I don't think his transfer is of any significance or indicative of a problem with the program.

I'm not saying he is a complete player at this point - clearly he has to improve his all around game (especially the defensive component!). Maybe he reached the conclusion he was not going to improve under this staff? I don't think he was pushed out - why would a staff do that after one part of one season? Doesn't add up.

Maybe they asked him to consider moving to forward temporarily due to his current skillset and the team needs (i.e. injuries early and a general lack of goal scoring)? Who knows.

I do have an issue with schools looking for and getting kids to commit too early - makes no sense both ways for a 16 year old kid to commit. Though, I think with the advent of the immediate eligibility transfer rule we're going to see less of it as schools will lean more on the portal than the 18-19 year olds (of course the "obvious" immediate impact players will still be as sought after as they have been). Not that it's a great thing but definitely a new reality.

Agree with assessment on Doyle. Disagree about Willman. He played top 6 minutes and got powerplay time. Didn't produced and believe he only scored in exhibition games if I can remember.

Spot on. Doyle's puck handling woes were frequently evident. He arrived as a 20 year old freshman, after deciding very late to take second year of junior (a decision that led to Jarman’s arrival), and BU was looking for him to work into the rotation. Didn’t take long for him to fall behind Copeland.

By contrast, Gallagher, a true freshman, ended up playing 34 of 35 games and made the All-Rookie team. I recall Albie commenting that the coaches hadn’t anticipating his adapting as quickly to D1 as he did. Perhaps his time at Bruins development camp last summer contributed.

Former BU commit Artem Shlaine (Uconn) entered the transfer portal. Uconn has two regular players in the portal. Their team is graduating or transferring it seems, which is surprising because they just had their best season ever. Maybe Albie can get him back to BU. He always spoke highly of him in weekly media calls before Uconn games. Very unlikely, but never know. Matt Brown beat BU in the playoffs then joined us a season later. Maybe Shlaine will do the same (still unlikely). Believe he didn't want to play a season in USHL before coming to BU and heard he wanted powerplay time before even stepping on the ice. Read he chose Uconn(he's russian so that helped) over schools like BC, Ohio State, and Umass.
