BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Congrats to Vinny on winning HE Goaltender of the Month! And for playing very well against BC at home on Saturday. Looks like Albie made the right call there.

What happens this weekend? Do they split games?

First, I’ll say that I think Commesso will most likely start both games. I liked Vinny taking 1 this weekend since Drew had just come off of a long trip and had just happened to pitch the shutout in the Beanpot championship game (and played admirably in Drew’s absence). I think back to back starts would have been tough in that situation. Now, if Drew plays so-so in the first game, a change may be in order. Vinny is more than capable in big game situations. That’s how I see it.

Really now NEED to take both games in regulation. I thought Sunday’s game would at least end in a regulation tie and get us some partial conference and RPI pts. Taking 2 up there will be tough even though we should. It will be senior night Saturday for Maine. Also in 7 weekend series at home this year, no one has taken 2 regulation wins (Sacred Heart, UConn, Merrimack, Vermont, Union, Alaska, UNH). They have been swept on multiple weekends in regulation on the road (Omaha, Northeastern, UMass-Lowell, BU/Merrimack).

Vermont drops NU into a tie with us at 15.

That’s pretty shocking - it puts us in 15 at the moment on the RPI tiebreaker. It also sets up some interesting possibilities for ties in the standings this weekend. If we sweep Maine, NU splits with Merrimack, and UConn sweeps Vermont, we will have a 4 way tie with 44 pts! If UNH can manage a split with UML, we finish tied for 2nd.

I'd heard Drew returned from China the Monday before the BC series and had only skated with the team for two days prior to the BC series - so Vinny starting on Friday made sense.

This weekend we need Drew both nights - he remains our best option despite Vinny's strong performance the last 3-4 weeks.

NU's loss helps us quite a bit as they're one of the primary contenders for the (presumably) final at-large spot along with us.

[Turns on the TV] Oh a lacrosse game is on. That means college hockey tourneys are starting soon. I should check USCHO forums.

[if you get it, you get it.]

I get it. :)

While I always say we need to worry about ourselves and not scoreboard watch...what should we be rooting for this weekend if one was so inclined to pay attention to other games?

Also, is Case McCarthy the new Ty Amonte? Poor kid is out again.

Every time Duplessis has been called upon, he has delivered. After being average to start the season, and the team in front of him far less so, Commesso has been very good since Red Hot Hockey.

Playing Duplessis in the first game last weekend was the right call, regardless of when Commesso came back. He earned it.

I expect Albie to go back to Commesso with the playoffs arriving. But it is nice to know that Duplessis is more-than-capable.

BTW, Albie must be a leading candidate for Hockey East Coach of the Year. Quite the turn-around from November, when he appeared he was more likely on his way out.

via Patrick Donnelly on twitter: Neither Ethan Phillips nor Case McCarthy skated yesterday. Albie O'Connell: "Nothing major, but time will tell." "They're scheduled to practice today. If they do they'll probably just be in a blue [no contact] jersey. It was kind of a couple of precautionary bumps and bruises."

Also, is Case McCarthy the new Ty Amonte? Poor kid is out again.

Case took a shot directly to the ribs on Friday night. He skated off the ice clearly in significant pain.

My understanding on Phillips is he too sustained an injury from a blocked shot, something on the leg that ended up swelling on Sunday.

BU was picked to finish 2nd this year so I doubt Albie is really in the conversation. The conversation probably starts and ends with Scott Borek.

About a week ago, someone posted a link for the odds of where the teams would finish based on their remaining schedules, but dammed if I can find it now (not sure if it has been updated after the NU loss to UVM).Anyone, anyone....?

While I'm hoping it won't come to this, I'm trying to plan for BU hosting a play in game on Wednesday, March 9. The Hockey East website is no help so I'm hoping someone here can answer a question. Will all three be games be played at 7:00pm? Or will they stagger them in case any of them are on TV?

Pre-season polls are barely worth the paper they aren't printed on any longer.
The huge in-season turnaround certainly supersedes it.

Bazin and Borek would be the other leading candidates. But let's not sell Albie short after all of the criticism.

I guess that depends on if the voters are even aware of the fan criticism. But I don't think you can just ignore the fact that people expected BU to be good this year. Nobody expected Merrimack to be where they are. Probably a slam dunk win for Borek.

I'd think the game would be at 7. That said, the chances of BU playing Wednesday are very low. BU cannot finish below 6th.

Albie is also not a contender for HE COY. While the second half has been excellent, you can't overlook how putrid the first half was.

You don't understand how Coach of the Year awards work. In-season turn-arounds often play a big part in how they are decided.
So Albie IS a legitimate candidate. Doesn't mean that he will win it, but he WILL receive strong consideration.

Putrid is such a good word. In general. Not necessarily just to describe the first half of the season. Anyway, thanks for responding. I have a hair appointment on Wednesday at 5:00. If they wind up having to play that night, I would need to re-schedule that appointment to earlier in the afternoon. Which would require moving a couple of meetings, etc. Yes, this is my life. And if I did not worry about all this juggling now, BU would wind up having to on Wednesday at, like, 5:00 and I wouldn't have time to juggle things. /firstworldproblems

Oh sorry, I forgot to include in my original post that I don't understand how COY awards work so my post has no validity.
