BU 2015 Offseason Thread-To quote The Clash - Should he stay or should he go?

Re: BU 2015 Offseason Thread-To quote The Clash - Should he stay or should he go?

Good news: John Hynes named Devils head coach.

Sad news: Two-time All-American and Hall of Fame center on the '60s Pinball Line Herb Wakabayashi passed away today.

Oh, that's so sad. Never met the guy or saw him play but always loved his name.

Rogie - small question on your blog, and this could be incorrect on my part, but I notice all over. Your headline on John Hynes calls him an ex-Terrier. I just think that sounds negative. Can't you just call him a Terrier? He is one. He didn't quit or get traded. Maybe former Terrier? What do you all think the proper term should be for a player that graduated? Or rather, just played? And this isn't just calling you out. All college players, once they leave, are referred to in different ways.

How about their class year?

Jack Eichel '18 was taken 2nd in the NHL draft tonight.

Herb Wakabayashi '66 passed away today.

John Hynes '94 was named HC of the NJD today.

I like former Terrier. So, should we reserving using ex-Terrier for those that finished their collegiate careers at a different school? Or should be be nice and also call them former Terriers?

To hard to get the class correct (Herb was a member of the class of 1969).;)

I agree, Sean. Cannot use "ex" and "former" interchangeably. Thanks for making the point, Scarlet. Hynes headline now corrected.

Re Wakabayashi: I hold Herb responsible for igniting my nearly five-decade addiction to BU hockey. I can still remember the first game I saw at Boston Arena (now Matthews) and being mesmerized watching Herb--all of five foot five--throwing the puck around with his Pinball Line mates, Mickey Gray and Serge Boily (and sometimes the equally tiny Eddie Wright).

Re: BU 2015 Offseason Thread-To quote The Clash - Should he stay or should he go?

Wakabayashi's passing comes as a shock. I entered BU in Sept. 1964. Graduated BU Law in June 1972 ( with time out for the US Army). Coincided with Jack Kelley's glory years. Remember taking a core American History class ( Amer Hist to 1865, then Amer Hist from 1865 ) with Wakabayashi, Boily and Gray. Honestly don't think any of them had a clue as to the significance of the year 1865 in American History. Near the end of one term I saw the young female teaching assistant for our class cornered in a CLA hallway by Jack Kelley. Don't think he was there to discuss Appomattox. My introduction to big time college sports. Anyway, the three of them were a delight to watch on the ice. A great memory from my misspent youth.

He'd make the kind of plays you could only say, "Did you see that??!! If they had Sport Center, he would have been a regular feature. Does anyone have video?

geez, too bad. I remember him and saw him play. Probably never lost to BC in his career:o and if he did, i dont remember it:mad:

Yeah, the BU team so far is thin in both numbers and in talent to BC's. Never mind age. Maybe Eichel will have announced he is leaving by then so he can play! :)
