BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Privitera brothers are gone from BU according to USHR. Wonder what caused that since Alexx by all indications finished his academic year at BU?

Better to happen now, than in December, when others have left, and left the team shorthanded.
Perhaps Pertti Hasanen can come up with a couple of European replacements.

It is strange that Alexx has continued in school, finished the spring semester and reportedly is taking summer classes. Good for him.
Although he was considered a good prospect, he wasn't drafted by a NHL team. So perhaps he understands the value of a degree and the difficulty of reaching the NHL.
The younger brother said he made his decision separately. But once Alexx said he wasn't coming back, he decision got a lot easier.

Maybe they both wind up at UConn?

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Odd situation, Mike's certainly got solid sources of info, so surely he got that tidbit from someone who wouldn't be throwing that kind of thing out when it's baseless. But you're right, I also have not seen anyone else put forth that info. Who knows. My relatively uneducated opinion is I'd rather have Grier, but really, I don't know much about either as a coach.

I suggested Grier awhile back. Grier would bring a much larger cache, having had a long NHL career and having been an All-American at BU. And he got a lot of props for running the training camp at Agganis for NHL players during the lockout.

Greeley was basically a fourth-line guy at BU. I know people that know Greeley, and they think he is a really impressive, intelligent guy.

If we were looking to bring in either as a player, then Grier would be the obvious choice. But as a coach, might be possible that both would do a good job.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

I'm still holding out hope for someone like Scott Young. Someone with coaching experience and knowledge of the prep school scene. Does Greeley or Grier have any coaching experience?

I would think at least one may show up in Denver since the younger played for Montgomery this past season.

I wouldn't be shocked if both end up at a fledgling program like UConn or Penn State. Close to home (NJ) & both could get decent playing time at such programs.

My first reaction is that you'd never see Cavanaugh go after a kid like Alexx with the trouble he had on the ice but then again they did go after Vinny a few years ago so who knows.

I really wish that happened, would have been very interesting to see (and rare).

O'Regan, Grizz and Lane. Has there ever been a 19 year old 2nd round NHL pick that didn't even get invited for the tryout?

???

Are you talking about the WJC? And if so, who is the 19 year old that you are referring to? Or are you not saying that there is one?

This is why people on messages boards dont do the hirings. First, scott young coached in just about the worst prep conferences there is...so knowledge of the prep scene likely isnt accurate. they are essentially a DII team and there are under five DI recruits in that conference. Secondly---to my knowledge both grier and young lack a degree---i could be wrong, but someone said that to me. Finally, young an grier both have money and dont need money. Dave Quinn is the coach. Dave Quinn can implement systems and do the X's and O's---he doesnt need grier or young to stand up there next to him. These guys have their money and will not grind it out in the rinks for players. Do you really think scott young is waking up at 5AM, getting on a ferry to powell river, watching a game, getting right back on the ferry---spending the night in vancouver and waking up early in the morning to drive anotehr 6 hours to Trail to watch another game? not happening. both assistants have to recruit. Former NHLers simply do not work as college hockey assistant coaches.

Greely is the guy. He is employed by the LA Kings. My guess is that this is all quiet right now because they are waiting for LA to be eliminated to make an announcement...

Probably talking about Kurker. But Kurker would be so over his head at the WJC I hope he was talking about someone else ...

Cam Askew has been drafted #11 by Drummondville in the "Q." "Cam we hardly knew ye!"

Correct, I can't remember any 2nd year college players that were drafted that high and didn't at least get the token invite?

I wouldn't know, but I would assume it's happened before, especially with really big kids. Did Brian Boyle ever play at the WJC? If he didn't, he was a first rounder.

So does that mean Stanley Cup winner Shawn McEachern's stints on the Lowell and Northeastern coaching staffs were just imagined?

And when I say former NHLers I'm talking about guys who collect a pension from the league--not guys who played a handfull of games. Guys like grier and young don't need the money and thus are not willing to do the work. And the work isn't showing up and running practice---work is getting in your and driving 3 hours each way to watch some 15 year old kid play...some former nhl players try college hockey---but they never stick once they realize what the job actually is...in their heads they think they will stand up at the grease board for 2 or 3 years and then be promoted to head coach...
