BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

In comparision to his competition I do not think he is even close... Greg Brown, Albie O'Connell, Scott Borek, etc... Greely leading the charge from a recruiting perspective---he just isnt in the same league as the competition he will face. And BU will compete with likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, etc as well. I dunno, again, I mean no disrespect---but he has no coaching experience and as a player he was a 4th line guy who was in and out of the line-up... Not exactly a guy Id be jumping out of my seat to play for...

I just would have thought that BU would bring in someone alot better with a much better name. I say that because there are alot of noteable alums...

I see your point. Then again, perhaps he's earned a reputation as having an eye for talent. Perhaps, he's well-spoken. Maybe, he'd make a good impression speaking to parents. At most, he's 31, 32 years old (graduated in 2004)? We've been hearing for years how crotchety the BU coaching staff is.

Also, while we're comparing him to all-time great recruiter extraordinaire Albie F@$%king O'Connell, lets remember that before he was the best asst coach a program could hire, as a player Albie was a marginal talent with a schitty attitude. You gotta start somewhere.

Having been a amateur scout for the past few years, he may have a knowledge of talent in the region. Perhaps, he's made a backlog of contacts, also.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Was he part of the Kings' scouting staff when they drafted and brought up Quick? That wasn't a terrible job spotting talent.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

At first I thought the Rangers had only fired Sullivan...

Maybe Sacco and Sully could team up and take over the Anchorage program ;)

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Greeley is listed as a pro scout on the Kings web site.

Sounds a lot like what people probably said when John Hynes started getting into the coaching ranks. I trust Quinn's judgement on this.

Also, are we so sure that Quinn is going to hand off the recruiting function to an assistant? I get the fact that he can't be doing it all - he can't fly off to Saskatoon to watch a guy play all the time. But if Greeley is good at watching and evaluating talent, then when it is time to make the pitch, bring in the guy who recruited BU to a national title, has coached at just about every level, amateur and pro, and is going to move BU back into the National picture year in and year out.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

My lasting complaint with JackPa ... It is BOSTON UNIVERSITY we are selling, not "coaches name" university.

If Greeley can go in and find talent and the sell them on the school and program, that is what we need. Not some guy going in and telling them how great HE was and oh yah... "BU was where I did it".

Agreed. All the coaches are involved in the recruiting at BU, as I'd imagine is the case at most schools. After one assistant decides a prospect is someone to pursue, the other assistant observes him for a second opinion--ahead of an invitation to visit the campus. Powers, who was an HC at two D1 schools, is a very experienced recruiter and was the lead recruiter on Maguire and others.

FWIW, Greeley was a Kings amateur scout for three years, then became a pro scout.

Odd coincidence if Mike Bavis is replaced by someone who is in the same role (or very similar) for the same team that his brother held on that fateful day. :-(

Greely had nothing to do with drafting Quick...also, as a pro scout greely 's job is to scout other nhl teams...he is not an amateur scout and thus unproven in the arena of evaluating talent...also, John Hynes was like 24 when he broke into college coaching---greely is 33? I'm sure Quinn sees something he likes--- it just seems to me like job fell to him after O'Connell decided to stay at Harvard. Who did he beat out? What alums applied and interviewed?

Please refer to Rogie's post from 45 minutes before you put this out there. Also, what mookie said. You're all wet with the level of aggravation you seem to have over this.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

It appears so.

As much as people don't want to admit this, and contrary to popular Hoky belief, BC hockey is going to miss Coach Cav's recruiting and salesmanship big time. The guy will talk to anyone, he is as genuine as they come, he has won multiple NCAA championships and been in the business 20 years. Brownie is a great guy and an even better hockey player, but he is not Cav and he does not possess the same personality traits that makes Cav such a successful recruiter.

Lastly, Loguey and Cav are tight, Logue's decision is his own, but I find it hard to believe that if Cav were still on the other end of the head set, he would be calling it quits.

But, per Hoky, a trained monkey could do their jobs, so it doesn't matter.

This from the BC thread. And these clowns have the gall to refer to BU fanboys.

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

You guys are the unquestioned leader in that department (hi agganis--your favorite topic)...

But yes, saying brownie and loguey deserves ridicule. Cav is ok though.
