BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Since all the Parker apologists like to jump in and call out those of us who say his time has passed whenever BU wins, allow me to return the favor.

BU teams struggling against weak teams. Showing a total lack of discipline. This may be the norm for the past few years, but it is not BU Hockey used to be about. How does a top 10 team, loaded with draft picks, lose to an unranked team, from a joke conference, at home? Once in a blue moon I can understamd. But this routine of playing down to the competition, looking unmotivated, call it what you will...it's growing VERY old.

Agree 100%, very well said.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

As disgusting of a display of BU Hockey as that game was, it was arguably the second biggest win in their school's history. I would be elated myself instead of the embarrasment I felt as a BU fan last night.

Last night's game was an embarrassment for BU.
I would give Holy Cross credit for coming prepared to play hard, and to play smart - neither of which BU did.
If BU had done either of those things, that Holy Cross did, it would have been about 8-2 in favor of the MUCH more talented team.

BU was unprepared.
BU took Holy Cross lightly.
The concentration level was as low as their opinions of themselves, and their own abilities is high.

Is there one player on the Holy Cross roster that BU would have recruited? ONE? No.
How many players from Holy Cross could have made the BU roster, as non-scholarship walk-ons? Probably very few.

We have seen a BU team that come prepared and motivitated to play against UNH and Denver. We could say the same for Millan.
They were unprepared, from the start, to match the intensity and effort at PC and against Holy Cross.
It is a good team/bad team situation. The more respect they give the opposition, the better they play.

Jack Parker can hammer them after the game, like last night. But what is he and his staff doing before the games, and during the games, to get them going? Especially against the so-called "lesser opponents."

Last night was a game that called out for Rollheiser. If not at the start, then certainly after the first period.
Parker believes that the sun rises and falls around Millan. I too believe that he is the better goalie. When motivitated and his concentration level is high, Millan is one of the best goalies in college hockey. But that is not the case every night.
He needs someone pushing him. Rollheiser is good enough to do that.
If Millan is allowed to become complacent, which it appears that he is, then he won't be at his best, particularly against the lesser lights.
Parker needs to play Rollheiser at least occassionally, if for no other reason than to keep Millan sharp.

This BU team has the potential to be very good. We saw that against UNH and Denver. But it is not a good team if it can't get up to play against the PCs and the Holy Crosses of the world.

Since the Holy Cross game was the only one of the weekend, Parker likely didn't want Millan going almost two weeks between games. So I can can understand him going with his proclaimed No. 1 netminder.
But this was their only game of the weekend. At home. In front of a near sellout crowd. Against an opponent that could only beat AIC by one goal. AIC? Ever hear of them?

And that was the best that they could give?
Shame on BU.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

i hope one of our little woodward or bernstein's went into the post game presser and asked....

"coach, your team put a lot of pressure on holy cross at the end there - begun by cory trivino winning **** near every faceoff he took. then for some reason in the last minute you pulled him and sent in superstar charlie coyle. luckily for you coyle lost the last two faceoffs so badly that the HC d-men didn't have time to react and the puck got deep enough that BU was able to get in and continue to mount pressure.

question 1 - how did you know that superstar charlie would get beat so cleanly and quickly that you'd be able to continue to keep the pressure on and question 2 - which play is easier to draw up after a time out? setting up an attack with your d-men moving the puck in after a faceoff win, or chasing down a deep puck cleanly won by the opposing centerman?"

I was planning on asking Parker about Trivino on faceoffs (he was great . . . too bad the rest of the team can't win a faceoff) but then he said he didn't feel like they won any important faceoffs and that Coyle needs to start generating more offense and having more awareness.

I did ask him what, as a coach, he needs to do better to get the best effort possible out of his players and he skirted around that question like a pro. Tim tried to ask it in a different way, but he wasn't fooled.

We also talked to Chiasson and will put a transcript of both Parker and Chiasson up after our stories are published tonight. Chiasson made it sound like there's some trouble in the locker room.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

HC to Hockey East as #12???

The possibilities are probably (in no particular order): RPI, UConn, Quinnipiac and Holy Cross.

UConn is already in Hockey East for women, and would carry the biggest cache. But they would need to upgrade their program, and likely play most league games at the Hartford Civic Center, or whatever it is being called these days.
Holy Cross would need to do the same, and play games at the Centrum, or whatever it is being called.

RPI and Quinnipiac come ready-made.
RPI has the history and cache to be as least as good a "get" as Vermont.
Quinnipiac is putting a lot into athletics, and would give Hockey East a school in Connecticut (if UConn wasn't added). But the only people that would be excited about Quinnipiac joining Hockey East are at Quinnipiac.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

I understand that Ruikka (broken bone in his foot) is likely out until Thanksgiving, and Santana (offseason shoulder surgery) until the second semester.
But what about Cisse?
I thought he was medically cleared to play for the start of the regular season.
I understand being careful with his comeback ... but has he experienced a setback?
Is he ready to play?

In his dancing, did he ever take some of the blame? Or say the coaching staff needs to take some of the blame? Just curious.

Anyway, duh on the locker room stuff, hokydad already let everyone know about that!!!

1) "the shorthanded goal to make it 5-3 wasn't the result of an important faceoff?"

2) "so is coyle going to sit for the 2nd half of next game since fidel did tonight for not generating more defense and having more awareness?"

No of course not. Didn't mention the word coach at all. And Mookie, Parker thought Chiasson had a terrible game, so since he scored off that faceoff, it probably wasn't an important faceoff win.

By the way - we're holding a Boston Hockey Blog mailbag this week where anyone is invited to send us an email (sports@dailyfreepress.com) with the words "hockey mailbag" in the subject line with any questions related to BU hockey and we will answer them to the best of our ability in a post for next Monday (the 31st). Feel free to ask us anything. The more questions we get, the better. If you could send all questions in by Friday, that would be great. Just an FYI, we interview Parker every Thursday after practice, so if it is something you think we might need his input on, try to email us by then. Just to be clear, we are NOT taking questions for Parker himself, but for example, if you ask something such as "How has Sean Escobedo developed over the course of his BU career", we can get some feedback from Parker on things like that since those aren't questions we normally ask after a game.

I sense a "punishment practice" on Monday.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

.It was kind of funny watching the HC fans celebrate after the game like they just did something significant. They didn't.

We are used to it in Atlantic Hockey. Anytime we win an OOC game, blame is thrown and excuses are in abundance. An occasional insult to the fans is just part of the deal.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Well after taking away the ping pong table, what's next..the vending machine? The video games?

Something is going to happen. This team will not get through this unscathed. This team underperformed and it's time Jack makes sure the players and everyone else know that this is NOT his fault. This is very important for the image of Jack and the program. When someone says, "Jack has lost it!" we need more examples than "Nuh uh, he won a national title in 2009... sure a monkey could have been the head coach and won with that team but still!" It's a big deal with recruiting.

My suggestions:
- Take away the stationary bikes. In a moment of senility, when they break the rules again he will order them to ride the stationary bikes that he already removed.
- Fill the hot tub in EggAnus with cement like Kramer did to a laundry machine in a Seinfeld episode. If that is too harsh, he could turn off the heater to the hot tub so when they hop in expecting to soak in nice hot water they get 40 degree water and maximum shrinkage.
- Empty out someone's locker over Christmas break because their end of season review of their own performance from last season was bogus and have Andy Glass transfer back in and fill that locker with all of Glass' equipment without telling anyone but Andy Glass. That's the ultimate mind-fxxx right there.

For the record, whichever genius created and uses the FakeJackParker account on twitter called this on Friday:

@FakeJackParker Fake Jack Parker
A Friday night off and Holy Cross tomorrow? Yeah, I'd go ahead and bet money on a hungover performance and a major letdown if I were you.
