Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Attendance of just over 1000 suggests not much interest among the public. Where there many PC fans there ? Will Brown fans show up for the rematch?

Quick note on this: there were almost as many fans on Friday night as there were on Saturday (this is very much due to the Pats' game), yet the attendance at Schneider is listed as double. I don't think either figure is accurate; I'd say 1,500+ at Brown and ~1,700 at PC, which obviously would have been much higher had the Pats not been playing at the same time. There were probably ~100 Brown fans at Schneider, while half the crowd at Meehan were PC fans.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

I think PC counts tickets sold as they have had sellouts this year with 500-750 seats empty

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Not that it matters in the slightest now, since we won by two on Saturday, but I just watched the overtime incident from Friday's game on ILDN. I think it should have been a goal. Nick Lappin absolutely clobbers Jon Gillies, BUT (big but here) Gillies had left his crease, while Lappin didn't alter his skating path whatsoever. Since Gillies drew the contact, intentionally or not, and it was outside the crease, the goal should have stood because there was nothing Lappin could have done.

Does anyone know what the exact language of the law reads? I'm curious to see if my own interpretation is congruent with the rules. If it is deemed that even if the goalie initiates contact, the goal doesn't count, then that's fine. But it looks to me, upon further review, that it should have been a good goal.

In any event, the no-goal call probably got Brown all fired up for Saturday's game, which was probably a factor in our hot start. So it's water under the bridge.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Here is the official rule from the NCAA

73.4 Contact Outside the Goal Crease - If an attacking player initiates contact
with a goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while the goalkeeper is
outside the goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.
A goalkeeper is not fair game just because he is outside the goal crease.
The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking
player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental
contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the
puck outside the goal crease provided the attacking player has made a
reasonable effort to avoid such contact.
When a goalkeeper has played the puck outside of the crease and is then
prevented from returning to his crease area due to the actions of an attacking
player, this may be penalized for goalkeeper interference. Similarly, the
goalkeeper may be penalized outside of the crease if the goalkeeper interferes
with an attacking player that is attempting to play the puck or an opponent

This is from page 57-58 in the NCAA rule book available here

Thanks, Zlax!

Hmm...not sure what the play in question falls under here. Gillies left the crease, but he didn't actually play the puck. I don't know that I would say he "interfered" with Lappin, but the contact certainly wasn't Lappin's fault or intent.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Anyone know if the students are back on campus yet? I'd love for there to be a good (and loud) crowd tonight.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Steele was great in net last night. The mental fortitude and power play.... not so much. In 3 odd man situations (2pp and with the goalie pulled) we failed to get a single shot on net nor did we ever get set up in the offensive zone. Yale managed to get 2-3 scoring chances while short handed.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Steel has been terrific in the last three games. It's too bad the team couldn't back him up last night.

I thought we were good in the first, very good in the second, and atrocious in the third. I'm beginning to wonder about the team's stamina- late in games I've noticed they lose every puck battle, bend over to catch their breath after whistles, and glide rather than stride a lot. Whittet should start taking the pucks away from practice and just making them skate until there's a noticeable difference in this department. You can't go into the third period trailing by a goal and have nothing in the tank.

Do we really have now a second coming of Anthony Borelli who can take us to the ECAC finals?

After Saturday? I doubt it. Something CRAZY would have to happen for this team to salvage even a mediocre season. I just hope none of the freshmen transfer- particularly Willman, Lafferty, and Bird.

Yale is really good, but after unraveling Saturday night, I can't see us winning many games in ECAC play. Maybe we'll beat Princeton and upset one of the better teams. But that's about it.

Can't imagine we'll be a factor in the playoffs.

This weekend is to me the weekend that will determine if Brown cab be a factor. If it takes two losses even in close games like this past Friday, I think it leaves us only to slug it out with Princeton for 12th place.

You raise a good point about the NHL draftees, especially Willman who is playing out of position for the good of the team, You might want to extend your point to the commits and those who Brown is seeking to recruit.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

12 games left in the season. This team needs to start to string a couple wins together to show some forward progress.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Mark Divver reporting that Max Willman will return to his wing position tonight with Dane Cooper returning to the line up after missing 2 months with a concussion. Tyler Bird and Tim Lapping did not make the trip due to a bout with the Flu.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Any positive(s) from last night's game?

No scoring with a 5 minute major. Missed a penalty shot. Neither goalie appears to have played particularly well. 0-fer on the power play. Now 4-14 for the season, one win in the league.

The only positive as I see it, at this point, is we're game closer to playing Princeton, who is playing equally awful.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

This is embarrassing. What a nightmare.

Other than youth, what's our excuse? We know we don't have a goalie or an elite defense. But giving up 5 or 6 goals a game is simply unacceptable- and far too normal around here. And furthermore, other than youth, what excuse can be made about the offense, with its influx of NHL draftees?

Is this on coaching? Are we forced to throw Whittet, who has done a terrific job marketing Brown and recruiting talent, under the proverbial bus for not producing?

Is there any chance now that we don't lose a couple guys via transfer after the season? I have to fear for Lafferty, Bird, and Willman.

At this point, I don't know that it would help to change coaches- Whittet has another good group of recruits coming in over the next several years, so there's no point in dismantling what he's built there. We would almost certainly lose several of those recruits if he were to leave.

What a mind-numbing experience this has been. This isn't even a talented team that's under-achieving. They're not even in these games! To lose by SIX to Clarkson is ridiculous.

To me it looked like Brown has quit. Other than a few stretches on the PP, this was not a good effort. Robertson was a huge loss, but the rest of it? I don't know how this doesn't come down on the coaches. One bright spot, I thought Ernst played pretty well.

You are pretty much always on the mark with your comments. I didn't watch the game but when I saw SLU with 5 goals I just thought Ernst did not play well. Was he really betrayed by the lack of defense in front of him?
