Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Did you read Divver's game recap? Sounds like both sides are getting heated- Leaman called Brown dirty, Whittet said PC dives. I can only imagine tomorrow is gonna get real nasty, and probably not in a good way.

I agree, by the way, with both coaches. The two Brown hits that were penalized were stupid and dangerous (not sure about the third you mentioned), but in other cases, I noticed PC players going down easy and looking right at the ref.

I hope tempers summer down by tomorrow and no one gets injured.
I'm all in favor of this becoming more of a rivalry. If it takes controversial calls and coaches sniping at one another, I'm all for it. Yes!

Here's Divver's article. http://www.providencejournal.com/sp...o-3-2-win-over-brown-in-mayors-cup-opener.ece

It looks like two turnovers killed Brown. I didn't see the game so I can't comment on the hits but from my several years of watching Leaman behind the bench at Union he was always quick to criticize checks on his players. Can't blame him for that. But Brown is not a dirty team.

Jon, your thoughts?

Yeah, maybe we'll actually garner some public interest if we keep this stuff up!

Attendance of just over 1000 suggests not much interest among the public. Where there many PC fans there ? Will Brown fans show up for the rematch?

I think there was closer to 1500 there. I put no faith in the people at the gate to count accurately.

As to the sequence in the overtime, I have no problem with the call of goaltender interference - but then make the call. From where I was, it looked like Gillies came out strong to challenge Lappin and was outside the crease and initiated the contact. That said, if Lappin charged him, thus taking him out of the play to allow Lorito the open look, I'm good with the call - but there was no call made. The goal was simply waived off - no penalty, nothing. Hence my frustration with it.

On the other hand, I thought the hit referenced above on Demopolous - it wasn't Demopolous, but Tanev - was embellishment at best. A host of Friars dove. Yes, the hit by Wood, which was called, was a penalty, but the penalty on McArdle was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit in which the PC player put himself in harm's way. In fact, it was no different than the non-call on the hit on Brown's Tyler Bird in the second, which sent Bird down the tunnel for a few minutes. Both should have been called, or neither should have been called.

It was clear that the officials lost control of the game early and made a number of errors. Even the matching penalties on Harlow and Rooney should not have been on the board - that should have continued at 5x5, not 4x4. But they were hardly the difference. Brown didn't play well in the second period. The penalty kill remains an issue. But Providence got that win because they are the 14th (or 13th) team in the nation, and Brown has a reputation brought on by Lappin's consecutive game misconducts earlier this year. One would have a hard time convincing me otherwise.

For the record, I don't dislike Nate Leaman or the program at all.

If it was Tanev or whoever that was hit the ref who made the call hesitated a ton on the call which is the worst thing. Make the call right away or not. Don't wait 5 seconds to put your hand up!

I didn't see the game (there's a 3 week old rather dominating my life). It's possible both coaches had a legitimate point...

I wasn't anti-woofing I swear.

I've got my eye on you.

So...if this ends 4-3, who wins? Do they play an overtime to determine Mayor's Cup champ even though Brown would win this particular game? Do we more heavily weigh away goals, like in soccer? Does PC retain the title they won last year, since both teams have earned 2 points?

The last option would be really boring but I have to think it's the one they're going with.

wouldn't Brown win on away goals since we're emulating the FA Cup? Or do we have a replay at West Ham?

That felt pretty good! :) If we can take one from Yale next weekend, I'll be confident in saying that this team is ready to compete.

One takeaway is Steele looks ready for the ECAC stretch run!!

He was remarkable this weekend. There was one sequence that he made two ridiculous saves and the refs had to go to video review to make sure the puck didn't go in, because it was so unlikely that he could have made the save. Looks like he's putting the first half of the season behind him and grabbing a hold of the starting job.
