BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

Re: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

It was really funny how they handled the McKinley situation on SportsCenter last night. I kept seeing "NFL player found dead" on the little sidebar thing, and it kept getting pushed back by about 25 minutes of coverage on the 49ers-Saints game last night.

I kept thinking "someone just died... you can't take two minutes away from your non-stop BS-ing about the game to just tell us who it was and how it happened? Are you kidding me ESPN?"

Then I discovered that it was probably a suicide and I immediately understood why they didn't rush into it.

I saw the exact same thing and stayed with SC an extra 20 minutes. It was about 12:30-1 AM EST, right? They didn't even put it on the crawl at the bottom of the screen. That was poor.

They also might have been waiting for his family to be notified as well.

Or just to confirm the details of what actually happened.

Which begs the question of why they would bother putting "NFL Player Found Dead" up on the sidebar at all. Why do that if you don't know if you know enough details to report it? What if an hour went by before you have the info you need?

It probably took awhile to make the determination that his wound was self-inflicted. The general rule of thumb in covering a suicide is to report it only when a public figure is involved or when the suicide is done publicly. And there may also have been concerns about notification of family members. I'd want to make absolutely certain before I used the word "suicide" or even hinted at it in the coverage of anyone's death.

Singer Eddie Fisher age 82 (sort of unexpectedly)
Probaly better known for his marriages than his singing.

Doc and I are among the few who can remember what a huge deal Eddie and Debbie Reynolds were.

On that second point, I remember vividly going to a theatre to see a closed circuit broadcast of the second Floyd Patterson/Ingemar Johansson fight. It was in Goteborg, Sweden. Some 6'4" 300 pound dude from the Swedish National Opera Company did their national anthem. Eddie Fisher did ours. No contest. Mercy Rule. Eddie was overweight, unshaven, and couldn't hit the notes worth a d**n. A really proud moment.

I remember when NBC gave Fisher a 15 minute show every other week-and the sponsor was Coca Cola. He was one of the early teen heartthrobs. But the media really turned on him when he left Debbie Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor. At first the reports were he was just consoling her after his close friend Micahel Todd had died. His two biographical bokks make for some interesting reading about his marriages to his 3 famous wives(and 2 not so famous).

All I recall was that Coke sponsored. They were marketed as the "all American couple," Pat Boone squeaky clean. I didn't recall the 15 minutes every other week. Cripes, let's not give the kid too much air time.
And you're way ahead of me on his spouse count, I was only aware of the two, and then only if you bribed me.

Lin, Betty (14 July 1993 - 15 April 2001) (her death)
Terry Richard (29 October 1975 - April 1976) (divorced)
Connie Stevens (9 February 1967 - 1969) (divorced) 2 children
Elizabeth Taylor (12 May 1959 - 6 March 1964) (divorced)
Debbie Reynolds (18 September 1955 - May 1959) (divorced) 2 children

The 15 minute show was aired in 1953 and he alternated weeks with some comedian who I just cannot recall but I want to say it was Buddy Hackett. Just not sure. He became so popular however, that Coke offered him 1 Million dollars to be their national spokesperson. That was a lot of dough in 1953. He had that squeaky clean image you mentioned and was riding high with numerous top recording hits.
