Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Link please to the plethora of campaign material from Leave saying that they were going to crash out of Europe without a deal.

No, it wasn't quite simple. You are, but the issue wasn't.

You can't say "This is what the people wanted" when you never offered them this as a possibility. It wasn't on the ballot either.

blah blah blah blah blah.

mookie can say that, as there was a choice. they picked what they wanted.

one can't pick what isn't offered, only what is.

and stop trolling or you will be reported ;)

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

My mistake. I forgot that one cannot discuss something seriously with you. I'll endeavor not to make that error again.

your mistake is crying over something that is irrelevant. the choice was leave or stay.
the vote sided with leave.

why are you continuing to throw out nonsense like "they didn't vote to leave with no deal"? that wasn't an option. they could not have had a 'vote' on the deals, as that stuff needed to be negotiated with another party.

please try to use your brain other than just your mouth if you wish to discuss anything seriously. logic is your friend. facts are your friend. ;)

Can't the Brits change their mind if they choose or did they take some sort of blood oath to not reverse the earlier referendum?

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Can't the Brits change their mind if they choose or did they take some sort of blood oath to not reverse the earlier referendum?

Here's an entire academic position paper discussing it if you can get behind the pay wall.

Short answer: no.

The UK Supreme Court's ruling assumes that once Britain gives notice under Article 50 to leave the EU "it cannot be withdrawn." That would imply that when Prime Minister Theresa May triggers Article 50 in March, the UK will leave the EU, no matter what happens, in 2019.

There would be no way back, the Supreme Court said.

While the statement on the reversibility of Article 50 is not the main holding in the ruling, it goes against the understanding of the legal status of Article 50 once triggered. Lord Kerr, the man who wrote Article 50, previously believed a country could withdraw its request during the article's two-year negotiation time period.

The House of Lords also received advice saying that Article 50 was reversible.

Today's ruling assumes that an Article 50 trigger is not reversible.

The UK gave notice under Article 50 on March 29, 2017. There is no going back.

sure they can. hold another referendum. have a general election and go vote this time.

Why is a delay on the table then? Could they delay indefinitely or is that not going to pass legal muster? Seems according to that date we're already 2 years beyond the notice under Article 50.

there was some mention a while ago that if both sides agreed they could call a mulligan
london could say "never mind" and brussels would say "ok".

The EU can state that agreements in a deadline were set and then not allow any deviance, essentially kicking the UK out of the EU at that point.

That is an excellent question. I do not know why the automatic trigger didn't fire on 3/29/19. Presumably the answer was "because enough rich and powerful people didn't want it to." I also don't know if they could just "delay" forever.

Sure but what if both sides willingly delay it forever? Is there something in the charter of the EU for example? My understanding of the German understanding of the EU (which is really the only thing that matters practically) is that allowing somebody to "bluff" under Article 50 and then pull back would end the EU. IIRC when the idea of a second referendum was floated to the EU they said "no backsies; you're done."

Back in March, the EU stated that October 31 was to be the last (and only?) extension date. No more would be permitted.
