Re: Bracketology

Agree that the bands will stay the same, but not sure about the "#1 seed penalty." It would be a mess shifting UND all the way to Miami's regional, but there's no reason for UND and St Cloud to play in the first round of the tourney after 4 regular-season games, and another possible meeting in the WCHA Final Five. I think that carries more weight than "protecting" the #1 seed's matchup with RIT.
For my money:
Fort Wayne
1) Mia*
8) Yale
9) UMD
13) UND*

Worcester (a flight's a flight)
2) Denver
7) CC
10) UNH*
15) MA*
(Gold Pan or Frozen Four?)

Albany
3) WI
6) BC*
11) MSU
14) Cornell*

St. Paul
4) St. Cloud*
5) Bemidji*
12) VT
16) RIT
* = ticket sellers

Not a chance in hell.

Re: Bracketology

I know the NCAA Selection process for hockey is completely subjective. However, I was wondering what people's thoughts are if the selection committee used more of an objective process. I have to think, as of right now, UVM and possibly UMass would be out. Maybe Ferris State and Northern Michigan would be in. If you look at the NCAA Basketball Tournament, hardly ever does a team with a sub .500 record in conference get in.

The field is decided 100% by the PWR. No other criteria are used.

Keep it completely subjective. I don't want to go back to smoke-filled room or anything similar as was once the case.

Re: Bracketology

Priceless, That's what I said. I know it is 100% decided by Pairwise. I was just trying to throw out a "what if" since this is after all, a forum.

Oh, sorry. I thought you were asking if there's any chance the committee would use anything else.

As far as should they, some people were ticked about Wisconsin making it in (and hosting) with a sub-.500 record but not enough to change anything. I don't think they should because it's quite possible for a WCHA or HE team to have a sub-.500 conference record and still be good enough for the national tourney. Currently, Vermont is 8th in Hockey East but in the tournament. They have enough games left that they will either improve their standing in the league, or fall out of the tournament.

So this is a (meaningless) vote for the status quo.

Re: Bracketology

As a fan of Hockey East, I have seen times when it was the best conference in the country. However, this is a big down year for the league. Just watch games on CSTV, Fox College Sports, and by the eye test, the western teams are just far superior this year.

Even if you don't believe in the eye test, just look at how Hockey East's top team did out of conference this year. Lost by three on home ice to Miami (and tied MU), got swept (10-2 scoring margin) by Wisconsin, lost to middle of the pack ECAC team RPI and lost to Cornell. Only OOC win was against bottom of the pack ECAC team Dartmouth.

Second place BC has lost to St. Lawrence and Denver and barely defeated Harvard and Clarkson (sub par ECAC squads) early in the season, but then handily beat Harvard in Beanpot.

Watch those games from out west and you will realize that HEA has been (as a whole) less talented than the western teams. The olympic roster and the National Development Roster shows you the talent has switched to the west. Also, notice recent articles in the Boston Globe regarding the subject.

Re: Bracketology

This is the script for the rest of the regular season. I don't know the make-up date for the AH/Ni game, but I put it on the Sunday afternoon when Niagara hosts AH. The date really isn't important.

To use this script, change the score of the team you think will win to 1. If you think it will be a tie, leave it 0-0. For example, this week's Cr/Cg game...

If you think Cornell will win: 20100216 Cr 1 Cg 0 EC
If you think Colgate will win: 20100216 Cr 0 Cg 1 EC
If you think it'll be a tie: 20100216 Cr 0 Cg 0 EC

Use this script at the Do It Yourself calculator at TBRW.

While I agree that it is a down year for Hockey East, this part of your post has nothing to do with the argument. While talent is and has been down in New England, BU won the national championship last year with a roster of players from rather wide geographic range.

Re: Bracketology

Put Cornell in Albany and you have a sellout. Simple as that. Doesn't matter who else is there.

I wish that were the case, but it's not. Cornell doesn't even draw a full house in Albany for the ECAC championships, and it's often predictable months in advance that there's a decent chance Cornell will be there. On a week's notice, no way.

I couldn't find a box score, but at the height of Cornell's power (2003) after going 19-2-1 in the regular season, I think the attendance at Albany was only about 8k (in an arena that seats almost 17k for hockey).

7,489, and that was against Boston College.

Re: Bracketology

Apparently not. I honestly thought Cornell alone would draw a lot more than that. Not surprised BC isn't a big draw there. Their fans aren't the greatest travelers. I think UNH, UVM or UMass would help, though.

A sellout in Albany also requires around 13,000-15,000 if you remove the curtain on the upper level. Otherwise you're looking at about 8,500 capacity. Either of those levels won't be met by Cornell alone. Judging by past regionals where those fans have been there, perhaps you get a slight bump out of UVM or UNH but UMass or BC wouldn't boost anything.
