Bottom Feeders 2018-19: Just So You Know, They Really Suck

This week's trivia question is opined by Marty the Cat, MWO mascot at the summit of Mount Washington, NH, location once again for the NE regional. Which site is the higher elevation, the summit parking lot at Mount Washington, orrrrrr ....... the rink at the SW regional in Cloudcroft, NM?

EDIT: oops, make that the Northern Winter Solstice (NoWinS) classic, NOT the SW regional at Cloudcroft, for which Marty the 🐱 is still waiting for an answer to the altitude trivia question.

I'm not one to upset Marty, so here's your answer.

8668ft - Cloudcroft, NM
6288ft - Mt. Washington, NH

So the NoWinS...wins.

Yes! And, by a lot, about 2400 ft, as the upper parking lot at Mount Washington is at least 20 ft vertical below the summit. :)

That's good, the four teams will have to battle against altitude sickness too. Cloudcroft is looking like a real winner...er, loser.

Will be even worse on the ice than watching from the nose bleeds seats at the old Boston Gahden!.

Re: Bottom Feeders 2018-19: Just So You Know, They Really Suck

The assistant commish wonders how big of an impact this will have on SLU(t)'s ranking in MARS. I await the commish's latest update since the past month.

Rankings will be out the 3rd Sunday. RPI will drop, SLU is looking to drop 5-6 spots as well.

Re: Bottom Feeders 2018-19: Just So You Know, They Really Suck

Also, UNH swept Dartmouth, and Western Michigan was competitive in their series this weekend.

Though when one Bottom Feeder sweeps another, does anyone really care?

I would say Western Michigan was competitive, taking 5 of 6 points from #4 Minnesota Duluth.

Re: Bottom Feeders 2018-19: Just So You Know, They Really Suck

This was MARS on 11/18:

1. UAH (WCHA AQ)
2. UAA
3. SLU (ECAC AQ)
4. RPI
5. Holy Cross (Atlantic Hockey AQ)
6. UNH (Hockey East AQ)
7. Colgate
8. Minnesota (Big 10 AQ)
9. Alaska
10. Brown
11. Vermont
12. Omaha (NCHC AQ)
13. Michigan State
14. Robert Morris
15. Sacred Heart
16. Merrimack

Bubble:

Ferris State
Western Michigan
Canisius
Northern Michigan
Wisconsin

....

Going into Sunday, unless something drastic happens:

RPI and SLU out of the top 10.
Ferris enters the rankings.
Western off the bubble entirely.
Northern still on the bubble... kinda sucking, kinda not.
UNH stays where they are; beating Dartmouth makes us yawn.

But, UNH played three freshmen and a forward on their blue line in Sunday's 4-0 shut out. Seems like that should earn Dartmouth at least a bubble in MARS, no? :-)

Does Dartmouth once owning the summit of Mount Washington, site of the Northeast Regionals, have anything to do with their exemption?

Dartmouth will enter the bubble. At 4-5-1, they kinda suck, kinda don't. RPI, Colgate, and SLU will be there, though.

Understanding that the committee likely doesn't care, but may not be factoring this in, I'd like to point out just how bad St. Lawrence has performed in the first half.

They are giving up an average of over 40 shots per game, projecting to nearly 1,450 for the season if it continues. This also gives them a team defense ranking of 54 out of 60 teams. 75% of the time, they are scoring fewer than 3 goals. Team offense ranking? 56. This is not a good team.

I would also caution the committee on reading too much into the victory, at home, against Clarkson. Given it is one of the great rivalries in the sport, records and perceived team strength goes out the window in such match ups. I'd also point out Clarkson likely isn't as strong as they appear, in recent games.

We shut them out on Saturday.

Re: Bottom Feeders 2018-19: Just So You Know, They Really Suck

News from the NoWinS.

Here's a portion of a press release from the Lincoln National Forest.

"The Sacramento Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest will be burning a combination of hand and slash piles in November and December when conditions and weather are favorable. The combination of pile burn areas will total approximately 1,000 acres.

"Smoke may affect the communities of Cloudcroft, Weed, Sacramento, Mayhill, Sixteen Springs and Timberon. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures."

NoWinS tournament officials have asked the Ranger District to delay burning in Cloudcroft until two days before the tournament, ensuring the most impact on travel and at least residual impacts on play. Rangers have agreed, which means the ice will be choked with smoke for all three games.

Let me get this straight. They will be burning weed during the game at Cloudcroft? Cool. Where can I get tickets?

Add this to the bad coffee and gas station hot dogs... I'll have fun writing this!
