Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Sure, a good number of those were piled up on BC powerplays, though. While demoralizing, this is hardly a sky is falling loss.

Another positive for me was that Millan played very well. The loss still stings, but I hope this team realizes that they actually can compete and win against anyone. Expect them to come out flying this weekend.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Once again, BC has lulled us into thinking they were going to have an off year. Now they once again look like favorites to win it all. BU could have won this game, but BC was clearly the better team. Nice job by BU on the PK, but BC's talent up front was the difference How many great saves did Milner really have to make - 2? BU just couldn't create sustained offensive pressure.

Three years with no Beanpot. Kind of a weird feeling. Chiasson has never won one.

True...however, I also feel that the BC forecheck killed us. The D-men had a really difficult time moving the puck...they seemed indecisive as if as soon as someone was on them they didn't know what to do. As a result, a lot of errant passes and icings, resulting in a lack of puck possession. BC is tough enough to play against but it's impossible when you never have the puck. We're looking at a disturbing trend here. Most of us thought that after playing two consecutive games against trap teams that this type of game would be more free-wheeling and more suited for BU's style of play. But the lack of speed through the neutral zone was evident just as much last night as it was against the trap. And it doesn't even need to be said that when we DID get opportunities we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Yeah, Milner was good when he had to be, but he was hardly tested, IMO.

Not sure if this is just something that should have been expected after the intial "rallying cry" after the loss of Trivino and Coyle. It has been speculated for awhile that they would "settle back" to their level. But the lack of scoring is starting to become a real problem and if someone doesn't start getting hot, we're going to be on the outside looking in again. It's not a very long fall out of home ice and I'm not sure this team will make the Garden without it.

And I don't want to hear the "you're overracting - it's just one game" baloney. I think we all know that this team has been playing over its head for some time now. This is another disturbing trend...BC always overtakes us in the second half of the season. It would nice for US to be playing our best at the END of the year, for a change...

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Definitely one of the toughest losses in recent history. Probably the toughest one for me to take since the 2006 Regional final in Worcester.

Despite a strong effort, esp. from Millan, the lack of depth in the lineup is starting to have an effect. This team hasn't been the same since Privitera went down; I never thought at this juncture of his BU career he'd be *that* important to the lineup, but from December 'til his injury, Privitera's game improved leaps and bounds. His skill set is sorely needed on the blue line, where his puck-moving ability on the transition and on the 2nd PP unit made a difference.

Privitera's injury, plus Nicastro playing thru his shoulder injury, is starting to put a strain on the D. Nicastro's shoulder is nowhere near healthy; if this was early in the season and if there wasn't another, more serious injury, to the defensive corps, I'd bet Nicastro probably would've missed several weeks.

In essence, the team is playing w/ only 5 healthy d-men. And I'm sure some of them are playing thru some bumps & bruises. There's only so much Clendening and Noonan can do; despite the best efforts of the rest of the d-men to elevate their games, it's hard for them to replace the skills that Privitera brings to the ice b/c they lack the puck-moving skills & offensive instincts.

Up front, while it's nice to see Connolly, Chiasson, Nieto, Megan and Gill carry the offensive load post-Trivino and post-Coyle, we haven't seen Courtnall, Hohmann and Rodrigues emerge offensively. The Freshmen have shown some flashes of great skill, but haven't been able to finish. I didn't think that after 28 games, Hohmann and Rodrigues would only have 2 goals - combined. This team NEEDS the latter group of forwards to emerge and start contributing more offensively. The 4th line does its job well as an energy line, but the lack of a solid 3rd line could potentially hurt BU against teams w/ more offensive depth.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

It's pretty clear Nicastro probably shouldn't even be out there, and only is because we're out of D. He can't bring his stick above his waist on a slapshot, and he can't fully get his arms moving when skating. Hopefully Privitera can make a return soon.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

My only point on that is I think it was a bit naive to think guys who weren't producing would all of a sudden start producing since two guys in the lineup ahead of them are now gone.

Interesting and pretty fair post. Some things I've been wondering were if they would suffer from the midseason departures and at times I've said they were playing over their heads and would be coming back down to earth. All truth be told, I was impressed with BU last night. A lot better than I expected them to be. Given the goaltending you get from Millan and the general mediocrity around the country, the sky is the limit for BU (then again, it is for a lot of teams).

The offense is clearly having issues. Trivino and Coyle departures have obviously helped this problem become an epidemic lately. I think the failure of Hohmann and Rodrigues to help fill in the gap is part of the problem. Those were supposed to be two big guns. If at least one freshman steps in and starts rocking and rolling you're in great shape in any given season but you're missing that this year right now. Connolly having a down year also has hurt a bit. But then again Megan has been a very pleasant surprise on the scoresheets most nights. Chia has to step it up a bit.

I'll give Clendenning some props... that creep can roll. Brilliance on that pass to Noonan on goal #2.

All in all, heck of a game and I was impressed with BU actually. The game could have gone either way. If it went BU's way, everyone would be thrilled this morning and national title talk would be all over this thread. Tough to take away much from these Beanpot games though. They really are not your typical games.

Feels about like that's what they deserve though. IMO it was detrimental to the program to keep winning the thing with a sub .500 record as it gave the coaches a crutch to lean on instead of demanding better performance out of the team. As BU hasn't had a better team than BC the last 3 years (with the page still being written on this season of course) they didn't deserve any titles.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

I'd attribute these offensive "woes" a bit more to the lack of production from the freshmen forwards on the third line, along with Courtnall. That, plus having to suit an additional 100% non-offensive defenseman in Ruikka/MacGregor over Privitera has hurt. That said, this offensive "slump" we're apparently in has lasted all of two games. Let's not forget this same team, sans Nicastro, put up four goals on Canatta two weeks ago, so again, the sky is not falling. There are things that definitely need to be worked on, specifically, we need to get better at hitting the net, but the chicken little attitude of some here is a bit puzzling.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

I'm especially surprised by Rodrigues. He really looked slick in the first half of the season, and I thought he would have at least 5-7 goals by now. Of the two, I think Hohmann now looks better, but yeah, until they start contributing on the score sheet, I have to consider their first years as not meeting expectations. Hopefully, they both find their groove soon.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

You just can't rely on freshmen (Destry Straight). Whatever they provide is an added bonus (Gaudreau). Also, I know a lot of you guys like Courtnall and all, but let's get serious here...

He's a 4th liner playing in an increased role.

Actually, I think a lot of us are frustrated by Courtnall, while he's a good physical presence, his offensive game is really not progressing much so far to the point where he's going to have a hard time being more than, as you said, a checking line guy.

Also, while giving the nod to Gilroy as a senior is a nice move from Parker, I think we would've benefited from having Cisse on the ice last night, if for no other reason than his physical presence. Gilroy just doesn't bring much to the table physically, and is a non-factor offensively.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Was it Gilroy that had a pretty good look in the slot at the end of regulation? Believe he one timed one over the net.

For as much as he contributes to the offense, my observation is that Clendening is easy to knock off the puck and doesn't win many battles for the puck in the d-zone. I can't see him stepping up to the AHL next season without dramatic improvement in that aspect of the game.

Yes. Air mailed it right over the net with lots of net to shoot at.

OT last night was absolutely tremendous hockey for both teams. Two teams laying it all out and going for it. A joy to watch. And, I'm more optimistic this morning about this team's chances to make a run then I was yesterday morning. If they can stay out of the box, continue to convert on the power play and get solid goaltending, wins can be had. And I love their compete level.

BU Hockey: More To Be Done

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Not hockey related but in case you missed it... we're getting a new field and a Men's Lax team.

Good news for the athletics department overall. Now if only we could find a new conference....

Hopefully, the new faciliities will help with a new conference.

I love the plan for the new field. The old WBA lot is an eyesore. Making the area look much better, more functional, and keeping parking is a win all around. Nice outside the box thinking putting a new field on top of parking.

This is great news. Any chance they think about cutouts for baseball, or will it be too small?
