Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Paul Hurley left BC to play in the 1968 Olympics and then came back to play again.

Great post Greg A. Why do you think the pool has gotten shallow? (And another expansion team ain’t gonna help.)

In my opinion expansion at all levels is exactly why the college talent pool is so shallow. Besides the NHL level the expansion at the minor league level has increased the need for players, but the DI and DIII levels have increased as well. In 1984 there were 42 DI teams, now there are 60. And now the NCAA has increased the game roster to 19 skaters, which is another 60 players (equal to three teams) dressing every game.

Upping to 19 skaters a game though doesn't increase the roster size of each team though. Its one less player that is scratched a night.

Being ever the optimist and, in less I've missed an announcement, I'm hoping that the 'no news is good news' maxim is applicable to Shane Bowers. I would have thought the predicted 'imminent announcement' would have appeared by now. I still have my fingers crossed.

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Add in agents and advisors, and you have the crux of the problem. Any decommits from future recruiting classes might be an indication of the direction BU is headed.

Lets not forget that advisors/agents have a motive as well. They arent getting paid until the player gets paid. The faster the players makes $$$ the faster the agent makes money.

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

A lot of actually good discussion and points going on here. CBA, Agents/Advisors, Watering down of talent pools... these are all things that are not helping the college game. Conference Realignment. I think it was a good point that was made that these kids just come in and have no real care for what it says on the front of their sweater nowadays. It's tough for a fan to get behind a team like that.

Throw in the age problem and the other things the NCAA does to hurt itself and you have a significant dropoff in the college game in my opinion. Some may say a record number of kids are going from the NCAA to the pros and that is a good thing but the game itself is suffering and it shows.

This. It has become a mercenary game. On the other hand, what hasn't? I see it every day in the software industry. Hired guns (contractors) are brought in, sometimes for as little as THREE MONTHS? Can you imagine taking a "job" that ends after three months, requiring you to turn around and find another one. The immediate gratification society is imploding. There is no loyalty today, so schools shouldn't be surprised that fans don't exhibit it either. It's a two-way street. And when agents convince players to "tear up" their contracts and "renegotiate," then what do we expect? That teaches us that our word means nothing. It's only good until we change our minds. No commitment to anything. It shows everywhere today...

The problem is that college used to be able to sell itself as an alternative to the pro game, with education being a benefit to playing competitive hockey. When the NCAA got a taste of being able to compete with major junior as a business with a primary focus on getting kids to the pros it changed -- the USA hockey created a "pro US Development" system in which kids move away from their schools, go to a weak HS/online course and travel most of the year. For the kids who can't make the National team, the schools refuse to take them out of HS, and force/encourage them to spend their last HS year/post grad years riding the bus in the bleak mid-west perhaps taking more online courses. Then, when the kids come in, they are told not to take challenging classes but bare minimum "hockey career" classes -- phisiology, training classes, etc.

So if kids are told education isn't important, but hockey is, then is it a surprise that the college kids are focused on the business of their hockey careers, not school? When weight lifting, travel and "playing against the best" is the mantra, the kids of course view college as a means to the ends (pro), ready to jump whenever a team says "you're ready."

And for the fans, they built overpriced rinks to cater to the non-school crowds, and priced themselves out of their core fan demographic.

Been living it for 20 years. Knowing I can be gone in a moment's notice, I try to not become emotionally attached to the job, co-workers, company.

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Per Jeff Cox

Being told by multiple sources this morning that Brittany Miller resigned as Boston University’s Director of Hockey Ops as of yesterday afternoon.

Officially hitting the *** Panic Button now....something is way off here. Team underperformed on the ice all season, 5+ players leave early (seems like they werent leaving because they were ready for the next level -- they just wanted out)..Colby Cohens comments in which I just swept under the rug and now Hockey Operation director leaves too? What is going on here?

And now you have seen the light ...... as I have been saying for a while there is way more here than people just moving on ... I don’t believe anyone except Fabbro should have or would have if all was well for all the reasons I have discussed .... maybe this will be an eye opener

All these things are certainly adding up. What direction can BU take now?

The amount of kids playing hockey in the U.S., not to mention the ability to recruit Europeans, has easily doubled since then.

Incorrect - Oettinger is on track to graduate this summer. Any player who has a degree in hand and is clearly playing at a pro level has every reason in the world to go.

Sadly I think the next shoe falls if we end up with a decommit or two .these guys all know one another i suspect they “talk” Colby Cohen was notnjust speaking off the cuff .... there’s a reason he said what he said

Cut the program? LOL......Who knows but I'd be very concerned about the direction they are heading right now and this should be eye opening for future potential recruits especially ones that haven't signed their NLI yet.
