Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

I think I still have eligibility, maybe I'll give Albie a call.

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

On the grad transfer goalie note someone brought up from earlier

Jeff Cox tweeted “Look for quite a few grad transfers among goalies with one year of college eligibility left. Robert Morris junior Francis Marotte is a big name. 3 goalies from Hockey East and additional ones from ECAC Hockey and WCHA.”

The Hockey East players that might be of interest that I was able to find in a quick glance were Lekkas from UVM and Wall from Lowell - no indication I’ve seen either is planning to transfer but they both have a year of eligibility and have performed well enough to peak my interest

Lekkas would be great- has played over 30 games a year for past 3 years
Was rewarded by being selected 2nd team hockey east on a horrible team
Is he going to graduate early as this would be only way to transfer without sitting out a year

The early graduation thing is what I’m unsure of. Cox referenced 3 hockey east goalies grad transferring, so I just went looking for goalies with a year of eligibility remaining. Not sure where I’d find anything about whether Lekkas is graduating early to potentially be a grad transfer.

I responded to your tweet below - of the ones you listed, only the RMU goalie is a candidate as there's no indication the others are graduating in three years.

But if he wants out of UVM...wouldn't he want to go to a good team? ;)

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

When these 21yo freshmen come in, aren’t they ready to graduate to begin with?

Most are 2 yrs out of high school.
Are they taking classes?
Need something to put on the college app other than “spent the last two yrs playing hockey and watching soaps in podunk Iowa”

My God, what a disaster....

Oh, right, I'm supposed to be proud that the old alma mater is dumping all this kids into the pros....

I seriously can't fathom how this team wins 10 games next season.

Who was the person the other day that said indications were that Bowers was staying?

Not sure what to make of all this. I think we were all expecting Fabbro to leave, no surprise there. Same with Oettinger, though I heard he was thinking of staying. Krys? I think when he first arrived we all felt he was leaving this year, too. But he hasn't really lit the world on fire and he's been pretty injury prone so he probably would benefit from staying. I don't see him in the NHL all too soon. Farabee? THAT was a surprise. I don't think he's ready. But what do I know. Bowers? Yeah, whatever. I heard he was 50/50. Looks like the freshmen coming in next year will get some playing time!

What were your thoughts on BU players who left before their Senior years to play for their National Olympic teams and then the NHL back in '88 and '92?

Or, what if players who earn their degrees in 3 years decide they want to sign their ELC after Junior year knowing they'd finish their degree on/ahead of schedule?

Is your frustration over ALL of the early departures? Or more targeted at Bowers and Farabee?

That was in a tweet from "Mile High Hockey", which appears to be some sort of Avalanche reporting site.

It is interesting to think about... did they all just get offers and decided to go for it? Leaving because of Albie? Because of not wanting to do school work? Poor dynamic on the team? Something else? As you mentioned, no surprise with Oettinger or Fabbro. The others moreso...

So.. who do we have coming in next year?

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

Am I the only one who thinks these NHL teams are nuts signing a lot of these guys? What did some of these players show this year that they are near NHL caliber or ready for the pro level? Toss out the hype and the draft pick stuff - what players really showed us on the ice that they are ready for the next level? When did any of them dominate for long stretches? When did they stand out from their peers? Seriously?

You can blame the coach all you want but the performance of these players was crap for the most part and what they do get? Rewarded with NHL contracts. Just baffles my mind. I am all for kids advancing to the next level when they deserve it but many of these players are in for a rude awakening - you cant blame the coaches all the time and personal accountability will show up eventually. Cale Makar deserves to move to the next level, most of these guys dont.

So you can look at it like -

WOW!!! BU had 5 players sign pro contracts after the season - they know how to develop stud talent

or

WOW!!! BU had 5 players sign pro contracts and leave because they dont know how to develop stud talent.

Maybe Bowers looked around and said what do all these other guys who leaving know that I don't know ? I can ride the bus to games next year and get paid something for it. For BU I think this is almost as bad as BC in 2016. I am sure college hockey coaches are doing some soul searching about how to move forward. No wonder attendance is down everywhere, we are not watching players develop. I used to say that BC season tickets were the best sports value in town, BU too. That is a harder argument to make these days. SAD

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

I’m old. Back in my day the guys who left early were (most of the time) ready for the next level and NHL teams left ‘em alone until they were ready. I’m having trouble adjusting to the fact that neither of the above is true anymore.

Will the last player left please turn out the lights before you leave? Thanks.

Re: Boston University 2018-2019 - Still Alive!

As I said in a prior post, my biggest concern is in goal. And I guess I'd worry about how a goalie coming out of the Atlantic Hockey League would fare in a Hockey East level of competition. Maybe it would be OK, maybe not. I wonder if there is any compelling reason for a starting goalie at a Hockey East school to move to a different school in the same conference. Obviously they'd have to be eligible for graduate transfer status or they don't help address our issue.

Not only that, the "one and done" players were mostly truly great talents (e.g. Leetch, Tkachuk).
