Boston University 2012 Offseason

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

Parker is staying! YESSSSSSSSSSSS!

;)

MET thing ended up being the most significant change it looks like, unless the "integrate athletes better into campus community" means no more having free reign on their own floor in the west campus dorms. As far as the relevance, Brown said he'd look at the team in its entirety, and not just these two incidents. I think it was Shawn Bates back in the day who'd already gotten his undergrad degree or something but was taking courses at MET to stay eligible??? Regardless I like this move. No more Underwater Basket Weaving majors while taking the classes on-line. Hopefully we don't lose half the team because of this!

Don't like how easy the coaching staff got off. Ultimately they're closest to the players and need to know who the problems are. If they don't why are they drawing a salary?

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

I don't think thats pointless... I would think that is not all that uncommon for bars near campus to work with a university on such matters... heck I think at one point either Basketball or Football players were banned from maryannes? I'm not sure who led the directive on that though.

hockey, basketball, and football players are still banned from there

but BC doesn't call up MAs and say "hey don't let these kids in!"

What I was saying though... is that the University that bans them? Or the bar? Either way, I don't think it would be pointless at all for someone at the university to have a line of communication with the bar owner / manager to let them know if players are getting out of control.

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

Since a point of the report was to determine if there was a "rape culture" among the BU hockey players, this line puts that to rest.

Maybe. Maybe not.

“Our assessment has shown that a culture of sexual entitlement exists among some players on the men’s ice hockey team, stemming in part from their elevated social status on campus,”

I both agree with this, but also disagree/sympathize with the coaching staff on this one. Having coached a varsity sport for a couple of years (albeit a much much less high profile one), I can say it is very very hard to know what your athletes are doing when they are away from practice.

Parker was stripped of his Executive AD title and now has someone who is formally above him on the chain of command, whereas that wasn't the case before since that title could allow him to be the top of the formal totem pole if he wanted. I'd say that's not exactly getting off easy. What did you want, BU to suspend him? Fire him? (for off-ice performance) Issue a public slap on the wrist?

And as I stated, that is the case at EVERY university with a high profile athletic team. That doesn't mean there is a "rape culture" among the hockey program. The point of this task force wasn't to investigate and find out if the players are being immoral players and cheating on their girlfriends. The statement you quoted in no way suggests anything whatsoever about rape or sexual assault.

That's a fair point especially for a one time incident (Sabo's off campus fight for example). Clealry with this team the bad behavior is either in 1) the dorm, or 2) T's Pub. As T's is on campus how hard is it to send an assistant coach in there once in awhile to see who's plastered or trying to break into the RA's room over in the Student Village dorm? I think the coaching staff doesn't have as much influence over these kids as they think they do despite multiple evidence to the contrary even before this year (the teamwide hangover before the HE playoff game comes to mind a couple of years back comes to mind).

I don't think this is all that much of a change. I doubt Parker was doing a ton of work as an Exec AD, so it was a title to show who was boss around the athletic department. IMHO Lynch has no authority to fire or discipline Parker.

What I want is for Bob Brown to tell Parker privately to start preparing for a transition and think about how he'd like to wrap things up because he will only be allowed to coach out the remaining years of his contract and that's final. Some may say "oh, he plans on doing that anyway" but I'm not so sure. BU needs to be sniffing around now for the best candidate to take over and start making overtures (Quinn, Sullivan, etc).

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

Whatever comes of this, it would be nice not to have to listen to foul-mouthed Parker shouting expletives while my kids are around. They really think the coaching staff is blameless in this mess? Wow! They acknowledge that the coaching staff has too long held the reins on this gang of misfits but they have not contributed to the culture. Amazing!

Remember the time you made a thread saying basically the same thing and it was deleted within minutes?

Your head is in the sand if you think Jack Parker is the only coach who swears on the bench. Where in this report did it say that Parker has been the coach for too long?

They have "held the reins" for too long....meaning they've been left to discipline the players themselves ... supposedly, going forward, the school will hold some of the reins.

Umile swears and Serino swore.

York doesn't swear though, nor have I heard any of the other league coaches swear ... and no one, even the ones mentioned above, come anywhere near the prolific vitriol we hear from Parker.

Not sure where you are going with this... are you somehow relating swearing to condoning or enabling bad off ice behaivior? Or do you just hate Parker and came in here to troll a bit?

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

Maybe you should change where you sit? I've heard most coaches curse to one degree or another, but generally when shooting in spots that fans are not. Pretty rare that you really hear stuff in the stands from the bench unless you are right over a bench. More likely to hear a player exclamation.

I can understand if you are teaching your children that it is bad behavior that you don't want them to hear someone they may look up to exhibiting the behavior, but it seems like an easy thing to fix on your part. (Also, can't hear stuff when crowd is cheering so be loud!)

I personally don't get offended, but then I have a potty mouth myself. I just dislike use of p---- and other expressions that suggest that females are weaker than males.

Re: Boston University 2012 Offseason

So after six months of "investigation," the university comes up with...NOTHING! That's what happens when you have someone's cronies investigate them.
