Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

When was Parker's heart surgery again? 2010? 11? I don't know if that's the reason, but this team 2010- flat-out stinks on ice.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Am I prepared to deal with a BU Hockey program without Parker. Absolutely! That is the point. I think that if Mike Sullivan or Dave Quinn were in his place, this team would be better off. I don't think recruiting would slip ONE BIT. I think it would actually improve. I know BU hockey pretty well, and I have no doubt that I would feel better about my son going to play at BU if Mike Sullivan was in my living room instead of Jack Parker. Is it possible that whoever is the next head coach could struggle? Of course. Do i think they would struggle any more than the program is alrady? No, I don't.

Also, for those who say that it is unreasonable for BU fans to expect us to be at BC's level, there is some truth to that. But there is no need to mention BC in any of these statements:
- Two Hockey East titles in 15 years
- One Frozen Four appearance in 15 years
- One Beanpot in the past 6 years

In the mid-90's there was room at the top for two Hockey East programs to be among the national elite - Maine and BU. They both won HE titles, made it to multiple frozen fours, and won national titles. I don't feel that the fact that BC has been such a good program is an excuse for why BU is not.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

I think we have a tendency too often to slap the label "weak, disinterested effort" on seemingly subpar performances by BU teams. Mediocre, run-of-the-mill talent is more accurate. I think this points to a flawed recruiting process. Some posters will state that good players haven't developed under the current coaching staff. Perhaps in some instances. However, the calibre of coaching didn't hinder the growth of Shattenkirk, Bonino, Wilson and Strait.

The 5-on-3 power play, and the subsequent power play at the conclusion of the 5-on-3, encapsulate this team. Did they have a decent shot on either man advantage? I can't recall any. These guys just aren't that good. Is there one BU player you can identify as a special player? A guy who could drive a team to a championship of any sort? I don't think so. Yes, Gill scored a goal and had another just miss deflection and Nieto was in alone once, but if they are your lead forwards, you have a problem. There are too many shifts when you don't notice them.

Parker has always done his best work when someone else handled the bulk of the recruiting -- Cahoon, MacDonald (did he miss on anyone?), Quinn, even though DQ brought in his share of nonentities. The current talent level at BU isn't compatible with the level of support the team receives from the university and fans. At this moment, BU's roster is interchangeable with any other team's in HE, except BC.

All in all, it's been a very disheartening season, to say the least.

By the way, does anyone else wish that Parker had called Big Sam Kurker's bluff? His contribution has been negligible. Yes, he's 18 and made a big jump from Mass High School hockey to D1, but the growth has been virtually nonexistent - one man's opinion.

Are you implying Parker does the bulk of recruiting now? Cause when I look at the bench pregame I see powers and bavis missing (powers more than bavis), but never jack.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Slight change of subject.... general question for everone on here.

I know that we all have our overall annual expectations of what the team should so / where they should be at on an annual baisis....

Setting those overall expectations aside, when you looked at this team in September, what did you expect out of this season?

Vastly improved over last year, cause last year sucked

About the same as last year. Disinterested play, guys bolting early and lots of question marks because of a freshman heavy team particularly in goal. This team has talent (O'Regan, Megan, Noonan, etc) but I'll be d@mned if I can say they play up to their potential because they don't.

My expectations for the next two years are the same BTW.

No, I was just making an observation. But now that I think about it, I am indicting the recruiting of Bavis and Powers.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

And you attribute that to Jack's surgery?

It was just speculation. I mean, pre-2009 wasn't this bad. Part of it is an increasing parity in the league and NCAA, but part of it, I don't know. I can't recall a stretch where we've missed the tournament three of four years. There's something missing, and I don't know what it is.

There is talent here. And when they were #7 in the country and knocking off #1 BC and #1 UNH they were playing good/inspired hockey. When a team starts to struggle, strong leadership helps right the ship.

They played the 5 on 3 power play like they were getting a root canal. Hockey is fun! Draw up a few good plays, pump those boys up, and send them out there to score two power play goals. WHO'S WITH ME!!!!!!! Seriously, this team needs psychological help.

And what happened to crashing the net? Were they ascared of big bad Rawlings?

It isn't just the results, it's how they are playing the game. That was an awful hockey game last night. And I would have said that if they had won.

I'm not sure they beat Harvard next Monday.:mad:

At least in 07-08, there were signs (in 07, there was great defense, while in 08, there was some excellent offense without goaltending). But during that time, was the team so disinterested?

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Happy Grounddog Day everyone.

Rhett emerged from his hole in Louganis Arena a week early this year and did not see his shadow. It looks like it's going to be an early offseason for the Terriers.

I don't think it is fair to say all of those years were putrid.

Good players haven't developed. If I were to pick three players to highlight players' tendancy to regress at BU, two of them would be Bonino and Shattenkirk. Bonino had 16 goals as a freshman and 11 as a junior (then left for the pro's because he was doing so well). Shattenkirk went +5 as a freshman, +28 as a sophomore, and -2 as a junior (and then left because he was doing so well). The third is Matt Nieto. He scored 10 goals and 23 points as a freshman, 42 points as a sophomore, and is on pace for around 27 points this year. I know these numbers don't mean a lot in and of themselves (teams change, the players around them change, opponents get better, etc.), but at the very least a player who is top 2 or 3 on the team shouldn't all of the sudden become mediocre their junior year. And if you watched these players their junior years, none of them looked like the same player from the year before. It's not just points, it's bad passes, lack of effort, not winning battles and getting to the puck.

Wade Megan and Danny O'Regan are our top forwards, not Nieto and Gill. Why Nieto and Gill were on the first line yesterday, I have no idea. Danny O'Regan has 10g 13a 23pts in 25 games as a freshman. For reference, Mr. Gaudreau (BC's false Idol and Hobey Baker favorite) was 8g 9a 17pts in his first 25 games as a freshman. Megan is 5th in the conference in goal scoring (1 goal behind, yes him again, Johnny G.). Nieto finished his sophomore season with 42 points. We have some of the most talented freshman in college hockey right now. The problem isn't incoming talent. It's growing the talent and keeping it at BU. Imagine if BU still had Chiasson, or Coyle. Apparently Coyle is good after all. Why couldn't Parker bring that out? Imagine if Wilson hadn't left after '09. Or if Trivino and Nicastro had remained on the team last year. This is not a problem with recruiting talent. It's a problem with developing the talent and the players as members of the Boston University Men's Ice Hockey TEAM and the University community. There is something wrong with the mentality and after sophomore year, the players have no interest in playing hockey for BU.

The Super Bowl was Sunday night. Is there even a chance that these guys weren't drinking?

With the talent of this freshman and sophomore class, the apparent talent of the incoming freshman for 2013 and the fact that BU shouldonly lose Megan, Escobedo, Santana, Rosen, and Ruikka I will remain optimistic for next year, but at this point it may be time to temporarily lower the bar and root for a winning season rather than championships.

This program has been going downhill since the late 90's. It seemed to coincide with Parker turning down the Bruins job, but other forces were at work too, such as:

1) Recruiting competition got a lot fiercer. That's a direct result of York putting his mark on BC, but even around the rest of the league. Used to be there was one good team in HE competing with BU at any give time. Lowell had a few good years, then Maine, then UNH but now BC's always good and there's always one or two other teams having a solid year (UNH this year, the Mac in recent times). BU hasn't been able to keep up with the increased competition. This is a bigger problem because...

2) Parker's strength is recruiting. By his own admission he's not interested in motivation and given the state of our power play for the last bazillion seasons we can safely say he hasn't adapted well to the game as its currently played. If you can't get those NHL ready guys anymore and you don't develop or inspire players when they are here, you get one FF in 16 years, same as BSU or SLU.

Coming off of the 1995 title, those subsequent recruiting classes should have been stellar. Instead they were amongst the worst I've ever seen. Sabo, Baker, Vouri, Maiser, etc etc - these kids had no talent. Who ever scouted Sabo and said "wow, gotta have this kid". I can list a dozen other stiffs if anybody would like. This is when the wheels fell off.

I don't think it is fair to say all of those years were putrid.

08 started out with the lost weekend in AK, then got butt raped in Ann Arbor on the way to missing the tournament.

07 was a lot of ties, then getting bounced in the he semis and crushed in the first game of the tournament - good year for nu or Lowell. Not so much for bu
