Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

And to add to the fun, apparently Bunyon is reffing tonight's BU game! Wahoo!

How'd you find that out? I've long maintained that Bunyon is the worst ref in this league simply because he has a propensity to make truly game altering decisions that simply don't need to be made.

Anyway, I realize disagreements with officiating is part of every game, but I guess my point is you just don't see hockey coaches getting thrown out all the time. At the collegiate level (compared to pro), it's worse IMO. What the proper punishment should be is obviously up for debate. At the most and depending on what was said/done, I'd say a one game suspension. So, nothing earth shattering.

MC fan in the BU-Mack thread.

It was in the BU-Merrimack game thread. I guess it was in the Merrimack game notes.

Bunyon should be a healthy scratch!

He is incompetent and has no business officiating college games. He tries to anticipate penalties and ends up making calls that don't exist.

He can ruin a game before it starts because teams begin play with no confidence that he will get it right.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Meh, they haven't brought their feigned outrage over here. That said, I would think he would've been fined or sanctioned in some way if he had berated them in the postgame press conference, that seems to generally be one of the main boundaries for getting sanctioned, due to the PR problems it creates. In this case, he stayed on the bench, and while he probably used a lot of expletives that were audible to the people sitting near the bench, I couldn't hear a thing a few sections over, and I honestly didn't even notice anything out of a usual rant at an official. It was within the bounds of the boards, and thus is generally out of the realm of a PR problem. I didn't even know until after the game that he'd been "thrown out", especially considering he came out for the postgame (postseries in Hoky's world) handshakes. It's like a manager getting thrown out of a baseball game for arguing from the dugout, he's very unlikely to get suspended by MLB since he didn't make any kind of unnecessary and out of the ordinary scene that would present a public relations problem. Coaches arguing with officials is accepted and commonplace in all levels of sports that don't involve 12 year olds. He was sticking up for his players and showing them that he was going to fight for them, and didn't, in my opinion, embarrass the program or league in any way. I'm glad he showed that passion and hopefully the player fed off it this week in practice, and will continue to feed off it this weekend and going forward.

HE could have suspended him for a game. I doubt they could have fined him.

The day that Parker doesn't get all worked up about bad officiating is the day that he should pack it in.
I wasn't surprised by his actions. I wondered what took him so long.

Joe Bertagna should have a warning placed on all league rink entrances: Hockey East officiating can be a danger to your health!

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Nick, berating a ref and berating a ref to the point of being throw out of a game are a little different in my eyes, but at the most I think you'd be looking at a one game suspension. Is Hockey East even allowed to levy fines?

Who could forget BC-Maine at the Centrum in 2001...

What happened at the Centrum in 2001?

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

What happened at the Centrum in 2001?

Shawn Walsh was upset that the non-HE officials wouldn't pander to him after BC earned a 5x3 and subsequently scored to put the game away (never mind Maine cheated and got away with it to score their only goal that night and that they cheated and got away with it in 2000 in the HE final as well). He got ejected that night and had to make the "Walsh of Shame" on the ice from the bench down the boards to the corner entrance of the Centrum.

Later that same official, Piotrowski, presided over the national title game a year (after Walsh had passed away) later that left Maine angered with an overtime penalty that Minnesota scored on to win the game.

Read these quotes from the link below and you will understand the prevailing attitude there under Walsh, "cheat when you're down a man because the refs shouldn't call it..." is basically what they all said. The offender admitted to breaking the rules (slashing) but that it shouldn't have been called and then accused the BC player of diving... That is how they were taught to play.

When a ref is calling a poor game in the 'Fond, the crowd yells, "We want Bunyon!" a two-for-one special.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Interesting quote from Clemmensen in that article. Says he considered Maine their #1 rival during his time at BC.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

After reading that, you'd think it was Maine that had the 2-1 lead and lost because of a couple late PP goals.

That's not surprising. BU was godawful during 2 (1998-99, 2000-2001) of Clemmensen's 4 seasons at BC

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

Parkers' been a ref himself (a while ago :) ).. he knows how these things go..
Given his personality.. he's handled it fine.

I'm sure if you asked a few BU players from the early 90's, they'd also say their maine rival was Maine. Hooray for puns.

Certainly, Maine was enemy #1 while BC was in their Clifton McHale - Callahan boys glory days of the mid-90's.

That was pretty awesome actually. Walsh walked out to center ice to scream at the refs and wasn't leaving quietly. He was out there for a while. He would start to walk away and then come back to dish out some more, over and over. LOL... I was frickin' impressed. :)

Personally, I thought he had a legitimate beef on the last call. The call was pretty ticky tack IMO. I remember thinking that night that it might be the last time we ever see Shawn Walsh behind the Maine bench. It was. And thinking back, perhaps he was thinking the same way, given that it took him forever to leave the ice. He certainly went out with a BANG! God rest his soul.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012 Season Thread: Part III: Now What?

I had that good old fashioned, 'eh, it's only Merrimack' feeling again. Then I remembered what Merrimack has been doing this year and thought, 'dang, we made that team look like an 'eh, it's only Merrimack' team!'
