Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

IIRC, part of the reason the ""Tiger 4" were suspended was because it happened right after getting swept by BC. So, yes, whether it happens during a successful season does make a difference. And it should.

If the players are working hard - on and off the ice - and get caught doing something like this, maybe the punishment is less severe or they get a warning. They have earned getting an extra chance. If John McCarthy got caught breaking a team rule in 08-09', he deserved the extra chance to make amends. On the other hand, if the players look completely uninterested on the ice as they often did last season and also have some other violations [as appears to be the case with Victor Saponari, at least] then they should get suspended or kicked off the team.

Fair, well stated, I have no problem with this thinking if that was stated by the coaching staff. I would support a rule saying after you can only go out after 3 points or more in the previous two games, and you can go out as much as you want the following week as long as you win Friday night, but that is not the rule.

Imagine under this scenario you are #27 (the only player of the 4 who was going to play against Maine) and your freshman year John McCarthy gets blackout drunk on a random Tuesday night with some teammates and coach finds out, has a private meeting with him and tells him not to do it again but nothing else comes of it. What would you think was acceptable?

Anyone remember a time #27 didn't appear to be working hard on the ice? (Whiffing repeatedly doesn't count as not trying :p )

Nobody has an issue with the "rat"?? I mean who suddenly reports something like this aimed specifically at this group as opposed to a drinking session involving more teammates (IF they in fact were the only players drinking at that particular time).

Considering the coaching staff didn't appear to do anything all season, this reads BS to me. Wanting space on the team, but needing an excuse and wanting to chest thump by punishing the others.

kicking a kid off the team who never played is certainly an interesting way to try to send a message to the team. I wonder if he was on scholarship, and if so, what becomes of it. Especially considering they already pushed gill back a year from coming in because of the glut they have at forward.

Hmmm ... do I detect a bit of sarcasm here? ;)

It is not about "did they have a good game last weekend?" but about the totality of the situation. Is this a one-time mistake in judgment or part of a pattern? Is this before Providence on a Tuesday night in January or Maine in the HE Semifinals? And I do think players on any team should understand that. I would have hoped that Trivino and Saponori would understand that. This leads me back to my original comment: If they do not understand the risk in underage drinking two nights before the most important game of the season and following that up with a video seemingly mocking that first transgression, then they are just plain dumb or they don't care.

Do you mean Cisse? Isn't Gill entering this fall?

Ya, along these lines, how did this get to Parker? Doesn't sound like the players were cited for anything...

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

The suspensions were not handed out because of the drinking.... the issue was handled without suspensions. They were suspended post Vic leaving the team and after violating team rules.

So what was the punishment for drinking that close to a playoff game? Did "Vic" leave the team or was he kicked off? Why, ultimately, were the two suspended?

Breaking team rules other than drinking? Uh-oh.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

Both Saponaris gone.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Sent Tuesday, May 4, 2010)

Three Men’s Ice Hockey Student-Athletes Disciplined
Two dismissed, another suspended

BOSTON - Junior Victor Saponari and sophomore Vinny Saponari have been dismissed from the Boston University men’s ice hockey program and sophomore Corey Trivino will be suspended for multiple games at the beginning of the 2010-11 season, head coach Jack Parker announced on Tuesday.

“Over a period of time, there have been cumulative instances in which Victor and Vinny Saponari have displayed conduct unbecoming of a Boston University hockey player,” said Parker. “In a related issue, Trivino will be suspended for the early part of next season.”

Victor Saponari played in 14 games over his three seasons with the Terriers and recorded two points - both assists. Vinny Saponari appeared in 82 contests over the last two seasons and totaled 47 points on 20 goals and 27 assists.

Trivino enters his junior season having tallied 28 points (10g, 18a) in 60 career games. He missed the final 10 contests of the 2009-10 campaign with a fractured right fibula.

Wow, I know a lot of you got on Saponari but that's just another contributor lost over this two year span. A 12-18-30 line isn't terrible by any means as a sophomore.

Wow. That's going to hurt the team's production somewhat. But it's better to have them off if they were not good for the environment of the team.

Well, hmm...

Also, what was with the initial report yesterday? Wrong info or did things change overnight?

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

The mass exodus at BU continues. Too bad, but I think BU is doing the right thing kicking Saponari out. I'm guessing he must have done something pretty bad to get dismissed.

Uh, what rat are you talking about? Your last sentence makes absolutely no sense.

As for the dismissals, it's incredibly disappointing news, but if it had to be done, it had to be done. I'm curious as to how many games "several games" is for Trivino.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

All parties weren't informed of the punishments until this morning, just before the release was sent out, per the team.

Story on the blog (link in my sig), and also on the DFP website.
