Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect
But anyway, back to hockey. Curious to get people's thoughts on Connolly as a captain. He didn't even come to mind when my friends and I were discussing possible Cs or As. Obviously as the team choice, they see much more of him than we do, but I wonder if this is analogous to the choice of Sullivan or McGuirk?
I obviously do not have as much insight on the practice related activities as the Freep guys, but my ideal scenario going into the banquet was C: 5,6 A: 12. I just have been given the impression that 5 is more willing to call out a teammate doing something wrong than 12, however going on the age aspect 5 is still 19 years old, so maybe that played a role.
I also am extremely glad that Parker did not end up just picking the captains, as those of you that know me in real life probably know how heated I was when that was announced. And losing that privilege and then fighting for it back together was probably actually better for the team chemistry than just being given the privilege, like any other year.
Finally, I wouldn't lump Sullivan and McGuirk together as the same type of captain. Sullivan might not have been the best captain, but it wasn't like he spent the season walking on eggshells to make sure everyone on the team still liked him at the end. Also McGuirk's decision was more baffling since there were 2 or 3 GREAT captains on that teams junior and senior classes and initially none were even given A's.
Might catch heat for this, but I don't think you'll find much argument to the suggestion that Connolly is the most valuable returning forward on this team –– and the only people who would argue are those who would take Pereira's "energy" over some tangible production (not too short Pereira, just saying).
I'd throw #10 into the discussion, but I'd expect that to take even more heat than your suggestion. IMO the real point though, is that this teams forwards are so even that there is no clear cut 1 or 2 best returning forwards. In comparison to 08-09 this team doesn't have Bonino or Wilson, but the 9-12th forwards should actually be better this coming year, and the incoming forwards are definitely more highly touted than the Class of 2012, the question is can anyone raise the level of their play significantly, a la Lawrence, Yip, and Z.Cohen.
