Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

I was wondering who would get in one first -- him or Gryba. On a related note, everyone talks about how Colby's shot is the only thing that's NHL-ready. I think his fists are, too. He can definitely lay the smack down. Example A. Example B (against former Eagle Nick Petrecki, no less).

Think about it - he hasn't been able to drop the gloves for three years.

You have a future the business. You are a very good writer IMHO. Thanks for posting.

That particular article was actually written by BUHammer.

And for the record I think neither of them have a future in anything;)

Like Agganis said, that article was BU Hammer. I'll accept your compliment on his behalf, though.

I'll also agree with Agganis about my future. There's a 90% chance I'm gonna end up working at a bar/restaurant/liquor store during the week and covering college hockey for no pay on the weekends.

Edit: Dammit. BU Hammer beat me to accepting the compliment.

Access to alcohol and hockey? Geeze, what more do you want from life...

Did you write the "ugly side of the 2009-2010" season article? Also well written.

Fed League and Hammer, do you have any insights as to how the players feel about JP's public verbal thrashings? As opposed to the more private approach taken by Jerry York.

We'd routinely talk to players, usual captains, after meeting with Parker at practice, and I'd often phrase questions, "Parker said that responsibility for motivating the team falls on your shoulders, what's your response to that?" or something to that effect. They (particularly Shattenkirk) I think always agreed with Parker and would offer up an explanation on whatever it was I asked.

Whichever one wrote the "ugly side" article had a whole lot more material to work with.

On a related note, did you sense a disconnect between the captains and the younger players?

I have a question about the Minn-BU article you posted in another thread.

Thanks.

Didn't hear from the freshman too much, but in general, the sophomores (Saponari, Connolly, et al) tended to echo the things Shattenkirk, Gryba, and Bonino said.

I actually think most of the players were on the same page -- it just might not have been the right page.

Like BU Hammer said, the players (especially the captains) often agreed with Parker's assessments and accepted responsibility. It seems to me that everyone knew what the problem was, but no one knew how to fix it. When I talked to Shattenkirk on Sunday, I thought maybe there was a chance he'd say something else now that the season was over and he had already signed with Colorado. Instead, he still agreed with Parker and accepted even more responsibility than he had during the season.

On a related note, did you sense a disconnect between the captains and the younger players?

No. Gryba seemed very close with Escobedo, Courtnall and Chiasson. Shattenkirk seemed close with Escobedo, Nicastro and Rosen. Popko was close with Courtnall, Santana, Gaudet and Gilroy. I don't think the problem was that the team was disconnected or anything. I think it was, as Shattenkirk said in my interview with him, that they didn't hold each other accountable. Everyone kind of just went along with what everyone else was doing, and no one really grabbed the reins and said, "No, we need to do this instead."

And it took him until the season was over to come to this conclusion? No, they all knew it was a problem, and for some reason they just felt like letting it go. This team needed a hardass captain like Gilroy, Shattenkirk wasn't willing to be that guy.

there is way too much talk about attitude- Somewhere should be the recognition that there was not enought talent.
We had a lean recruiting year and had to acclerate two players whowould have been much better with another year.
Up front we really had 2 4th lines- 6 forwards who could contibute
